Since 1846, we’ve created unique textiles influencing the fashion landscape in West and Central Africa. These fabrics reflect true Dutch craftsmanship and were originally known as ‘Hollan d ai s’, from the French word for ‘Dutch’. We’re still in fact the only brand creating authentic Dutch Wa x fabrics.

In order to move forward, Africa needs to eradicate old perceptions of it being characterized by lack of development and look forward to a new era of progress defined by a set of protagonists who truly see the potential for upward mobility and change in societal structure, and who - in the luxury sector - can enhance creative product development, fine-finish manufacturing and be able to hold their own in global markets due to strong product storytelling, high-end craftsmanship and service differentiation. In luxury, like in all sectors, we need to encourage careful investment and not charity to stimulate long-term growth. We need to understand what Africa can be and not what it is perceived to be, whilst not losing contact with our roots and imperative to uplift those less fortunate around us. I truly believe that African luxury is unique in its advanced level of consideration for its environment in which it lives that results in greater emotional connection to brands born of our soil and loved by our people.

I feel immense pride that after 4 years, that SALA had surpassed an association of interested members in SA and had become a strong network of people in Africa and beyond who care about the development of an industry on our beautiful continent.

Umberto Angeloni (MBA – Ivy Business School, Canada) was CEO and co-owner of Brioni and transformed the company from a men’s wear manufacturer with an annual turnover of € 20 million into the Brioni Group, a leading international luxury lifestyle brand, achieving a tenfold in turnover by 2006. In 2013 he acquired additional stakes in the company reaching 100% of the stock, assuming the titles of President and C.E.O and took the Company private. Angeloni entered a partnership with Fosun Group which acquired 35% of the Company’s equity through a capital increase. Cavalli Estate is born from a family’s love for horses, wine and cuisine and the sublime result when all three passions find a single home in the Stellenbosch Wine Route district.  Indeed “I Cavalli” means “the Horses” in Italian and “I Cavalli Dorati” the “Golden Horses” pin can be seen worn by our team and guests that have already become loyal supporters.  “Cavalli’s dedicated team are striving to ensure that it becomes a world class estate in terms of its enduring aspiration for quality with the principle of integrity at its heart,” says Lauren Smith, Cavalli’s Operations Director. EQUUS, the Cavalli Estate restaurant is an exciting pilot project with the Green Building council of South Africa and is set to be the first Green Star rated restaurant and exhibition space in the country. CHARTER ACCELERATOR

The purpose of the association is to encourage interaction and collective thinking within the region’s premium lifestyle and luxury industry, something we hope to accomplish by providing fresh industry intelligence while creating regular opportunities for informed debate, networking and collaboration between our members through a series of events. We are thankful to all of our members who have pledged their support since SALA’s inception. The association is a section 21 non-profit.

Member details areavailable on www.sa-la.org/members

BUSINESS TO BUSINESS. The SALA Briefing is a carefully orchestrated opportunity for industry leaders and senior management in the South African luxury and premium lifestyle communities to gather and engage in topical debate and informal networking. SALA is committed to the creation and exchange of insights and these quarterly events are the Association’s primary vehicle for maintaining this important dialogue. The events across the year are intended to host between 60-80 guests and are well attended with often more than 100 attendees. We regularly host international senior management officials in SA and invite members to suggest speakers and topics that are of relevance to the industry. Recent speakers included Mark Shuttleworth and Maurice Hennessy.

The SALA Accelerator identifies nascent African luxury brands - from any category - that display the creativity and potential to succeed on both local and international stages. Dependent of the location and quantum of private and/or public sponsorship SALA will task and work with independent agencies to provide professional resources and advice relevant to the brand in question so that it might be ‘accelerated’ along its trajectory towards recognition and success. During a primary session with a brand we assess and analyze what the brand’s needs might be in terms of assistance for development and growth. It may be a pragmatic distribution strategy to reach out to HNW clients or for others, whilst their product quality may be strong, their businesses may need collateral development, for others we script their brand story and enhance their customer experience design and help them position themselves vis-à-vis their competitors. For other accelerator brands it may be the definition of values that can be filtered through their organization or, for most, it may be basic PR and communications planning for the luxury sector in SA to ensure they are more clearly seen as worthy of attention.

BUSINESS TO HNW/UHNW CLIENT. SALA discretely choreographs sets of brands with similar goals, ambitions and values so that they can optimize their efforts in market and reach out to affluent consumers through collabora-tion. Depending on the involvement needed, SALA takes a management fee for the event per brand for involvement, driving the event management process and the client list in a neutral manner. Depending on the nature of the brand and scale of the ambition of the project, we can work to create intimate settings for UHNWs and more elaborate displays that build awareness across a broader HNW clientele. We are able to handle the event PR in-house should budgets be nominal, engage best-practice suppliers and often work with the PR companies already on retainer for longer projects. We work across sector in a discrete manner and minimize conflict by focusing on matching brands with similar brand equity or alternatively based on their specific client wealth tier needs.
