Greetings to all our Readers!
I take immense
pleasure in writing
this “Foreward” for
the maiden issue of
our college in-
house newsletter,
” T h e B a n y a n
Enclave”. This will
be released biannually to record and
share the important events on the
campus.
The College is scaling greater heights
under the dynamic leadership of
Mr.Harbans Singh Anand, President
and Mr. Manjit Singh Nayar, General
Secretary and Correspondent. During
its more than four decades of existence,
the College has recorded exponential
growth. It is a full-fledged co-
educational, post graduate and
r e s e a r c h i n s t i t u t i o n w i t h 4 0
programmes, affiliated to the University
of Madras. The student strength at
present is 5200.
This academic year is a very special
year in the history of the Guru Nanak

year students. Were admitted into the
autonomy stream.
We have been bracing ourselves for
the changes and challenges that lie
ahead. The state-of-the-art Guru
Harkrishan Block, a three storied
building, with a total built up area of
54,316 sq.ft . , comprising The
Principal's cabin , Director's cabin, a
Board Room and 26 classrooms, of
which 10 are smart classrooms, was
completed last year to accommodate
the growing strength of students. It has
become functional this academic year.
The office of the Controller of
Examinations is fully operational and
the first batch of students have taken
their examinations.
The focus now is to equip our students
with the knowledge and skills
necessary to compete amongst the
best in a global economy. We have set
ourselves a goal to be a beacon of
educational excellence. Our new
status as an autonomous college gives
us the extra edge to introduce
innovations in the curriculum and the
system of evaluation and I am
confident we will realize all our dreams.

FRESHERS DAY
thFreshers Day, Shift I & II was held on 26 June, 2015.
The Chief Guest, Dr. C.Sylendra Babu, IPS, Additional
Director General of Police, Coastal Security, spoke
about the importance of physical exercise, good
communication skills and planning the day through
proper time management.
The Chief Guest, for Shift - II, Dr. Jayashree Suresh,
Dean, School of Management, SRM University, in her
special address stressed the importance of value
based education, especially honesty and integrity.
Dr.Gunita Arun Chandhok, Director Shift II, welcomed
the gathering and introduced the Chief Guest to the
august audience. Sardar Manjit Singh Nayar, Gen. Sec
and Correspondent , graced the occasion. Dr.Selvaraj,
Principal, highlighted the rules and regulations of the
college and stressed the importance of Mata, Pita,
Indelible Moments.....Guru and Deivam. He also introduced the Heads of
various Departments, and Staff Advisors for Student
Welfare Programmes.
THE ECSTATIC DAY OF INDEPENDENCE
Mr. Karthik Seshadri, Advocate and Partner, Iyer and
Thomas, Attorneys at Law was the Chief Guest at the th
Independence day, celebrated on the 15 August 2015.

Dr. Gunita Arun Chandhok volunteered themselves for
this praiseworthy accomplishment, which is now in your
hand. I congratulate and thank them sincerely for their
gesture and good efforts. I also appeal to all my
colleagues and students volunteers to extend their
cooperation in nurturing “The Banyan Enclave” in its
growth and prosperity.
The campus is vibrant with activities and “The Banyan
Enclave” will capture the essence of our excitement and
enthusiasm.

wGuru Nanak College was re-accredited at “A Grade”
by NAAC in 2013
wThe College was conferred with “Autonomous
Status” by UGC in 2015

colleges”, conducted by India Today in 2015, Guru

The ceremony began with flag hoisting. A highly

INVESTITURE CEREMONY
The Investiture Ceremonies of the Students Council nd
Shift-I & II were inaugurated on 22 August, 2015. The
Chief Guest for Shift-I Dr. A.R. Veeramani, CDC,
University of Madras, advised the students to uphold
the values of punctuality, hard work and benevolence to
achieve success..
The Chief Guest for Shift II, Dr.S.Thirumagan,
Controller of Examination, University Of Madras ,
highlighted the importance of higher education in
creating socially responsible citizens. The Chief Guests
administered the Oath of office to the democratically
elected student leaders.

sDr. Gunita Arun Chandhok, Director, Shift II, was
conferred the “All India – Best Academic
Administrator Award”,by Dr.A.Kalanidhi, former
Vice-chancellor, Anna University, organised by
Venus International Foundation Centre for thAdvanced Research and Design, on 5 July,2015,
for her valuable contribution in the field of
Education and Management.
sDr. M.K.Shakila, Director, (MBA), was conferred
“Young Faculty Award”.
sMr. M.Thenkovan, Asst. Prof, Dept. of Commerce,
received “Best Teacher Award”, from Kalaimamani
S.P. Muthuraman, organised by Ilakiya Solai,

G.S.GILL RESEARCH INSTITUTE
G.S.Gill Research Institute started in the year 1990,
recognized by University of Madras in 2005, to offer
research programs leading to the award of M.Phil and
Ph.D. Degrees. The institute is basically concerned with
research relating to inter-disciplinary approaches in
insect-plant relationships that results in the building up
of a strong information base for specific extension into
agriculture, forestry and environment. GRI recently
received a face lift at Maharani Devi Vidyavathi Block th
on 24 August 2015 with Dr. S.Natarajan, Associate
Professor and Head, Department of Plant Biology &
Plant Biotechnology taking charge as the Director. Dr.
J. Jayanthi, Associate Professor, Department of
Advanced Zoology and Biotechnology, and recipient of
'Young Scientist Award' has taken charge as the Deputy
Director and Dr.Amandeep Hora as the Deputy Dean.
The G.S. Gill Research Institute (GRI) in association
with the Indian Science Congress Association, Chennai
Chapter conducted a Science communicator's Search thmeet on 30 October 2015. Of the several papers
received for presentation four speakers were shortlisted
and presented their views on Science and technology
for indigenous India. The meeting was presided by

Dr. C.Muthamizchelvan, Director Engineering &
Technology, SRM University, Kattankulathur and
Convener, Indian Science Congress Association,
Chennai Chapter. The presentations were on the
scientific topics like Indian Science - Beyond stone and
pestle, Seaweed fertilizers, Bioactivity enhancement of
Andrographolide and oral cancer- Primary prevention
to tertiary care.
“FOOD FESTIVAL - 2015”
st rd“Food Festival – 2015-1 Edition” was organised on 3
September 2015. Elaborate preparations of
aesthetically balanced diet were displayed and smartly
marketed by the students of the B.C.A Department,
under the guidance of Mrs.V.Devi, Dean(Students)and
Head, Dept. of BCA. Over 30 food stalls were
organized by the vibrant students. Around 4000
students visited the stalls and relished the dishes.
This mega fest was organized with the primary
objective of encouraging team spirit and inculcating
social responsibility amongst students. The profit of the
food fest was donated to Guru Nanak College's in-
house “Mid-day Meal Scheme (Langar)”, which caters
to around 350 economically and socially backward
students of the college on all working days of the
college.
FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES
The MBA Department organized a one day faculty th
development programme on “Case Analysis” on 19
September 2015. Dr. Jayashree Suresh, Dean,
Department of Management Studies, SRM University
was the resource person. The programme was
organized for the faculty members of colleges in
Chennai and Corporates with the aim of inculcating in
them the skill of identifying different approaches in
solving a specific case and to use it effectively as a
teaching methodology. Over 67 faculty members from
various city colleges actively participated in the
programme.
The Departments of Computer Application (BCA) and
Computer Science (BSc) conducted a one day Faculty th
Development Programme on 30 , Sep - 2015.The
resource person for the day was Dr. T.G. Sambanthan,
Professor/EDP Manager, Head-Computer Centre,
National Institute of Technical Teacher Training and
Research and Dr.D.Arivudainambi Associate
Professor, Anna University. Dr. T.G.Sambanthan spoke
on the topic “Today's Adolescents and the need for
outcome based Learning”. Dr. D. Arivudainambi gave
an insight on “How to write and publish a technical
paper?” He gave the faculty an in-depth idea on how to
write and publish journals and do research optimally.
Over 75 faculty members from various colleges and
universities in TN actively participated.

PERFORMANCE
Gatka is the martial Art of the Sikhs. It is a key part of the th
array of Sikh Shastar Vidiya developed during the 15 , th th
16 and 17 centuries. It involves the use of various
traditional weapons such as Chakar, chakram, shield
,khanda, kirpan, lathi , soti and talwar. It symbolizes
discipline , bravery and passion.
thOn 6 September 2015, an exhilarating performance of
Gatka was showcased by Sikligar Sikh students of
Sant Sipahi School of Sports and Martial Arts at Guru
Nanak College, Chennai . The students exhibited their
talents under the Stewardship of Dr. Jagmohan
Singh.The display showed the level of concentration
and bravery , which was inculcated in the young
performers.
ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT CELL
INAUGURATION
G u r u N a n a k C o l l e g e i n a u g u r a t e d t h e th“Entrepreneurship Development Cell” on 14
September 2015.The objective of the ED Cell is to
conduct Entrepreneurial Workshops and Drives, Guest
lectures and enter into MoU with PSU's to promote
budding entrepreneurs. The Chief guest, Padmashri,
Kalaimamani, Dr.Nalli Kuppuswami Chetti, Chairman-
Nalli House shared his valuable experiences and
narrated the achievements of note worthy
entrepreneurs who made it big in life by sheer will
power and determination. Mr. Manjit Singh Nayar,
General Secretary & Correspondent, in his address,
advised the students to take up the challenges in life
and become job providers than remain mere job
seekers
WOMEN STUDENTS' FORUM
The activities of the Women Students' Forum (Shift I)
started with an 'Orientation Meeting ' for the first year thWomen students on 24 July 2015 where the students
were given general advice and counseling. A “Health thAwareness Programme” was organised on 29

President,Women's Life Care Centre (WLCC), the
resource person spoke to the students about the thWomen's major health issues. On 5 October 2015, “
One day Craft Workshop” was organised. Ms. Sasikala
and Ms. Bharathi of II M.Com ,taught the students to
make clay jewellery, silk thread bangles and glass
painting .
Women Students' Forum – 'Shakti' Shift II for the thacademic year 2015-16 was inaugurated on 15
September, 2015. Dr. N.C. Rajashree, CoE, GNC, the
chief guest, highlighted the importance of time
management, hard work and honesty to succeed in life.
Later cultural promos by students entertained the
audience through song, dance and yoga.
GNC ALUMNI FROM SINGAPORE ON “THE
SECRET OF SUCCESS”
A special lecture on the topic “The Secret of Success” stwas organised on 21 September 2015. Dr.Kanniah
Desti, Senior lecturer , James Cook University-
Australia, Singapore Campus and Alumni of the college
was the resource person. In his inspiring speech, he
highlighted on “SHEDS”- Self Confidence, Hard work,
Efforts, Divinity and Sincerity to achieve success.
THE EUPHORIC GRADUATION DAY
Guru Nanak College (Shift I) organised the “Graduation thDay” ceremony on 26 September 2015 in the august
presence of "Sri. M. Venkaiah Naidu, Honourable

Union Minister of Urban Development and Poverty
Alleviation & Parliamentary Affairs", Govt. of India. He
delivered an inspiring speech advising students to
become complete individuals and also emphasized
that higher learning must enable empowerment and
enlightenment. He also stressed on 'Make in India,
Skill India, Digital India and Clean India' are well
thought components to make resurgent India. 'To
achieve these objectives, our educational policies,
curriculum, academia-industry interface, priorities
need to be revisited to ensure that they are in tune with
national demands and goals. He advised the students
to always remember their mother, motherland and the
mother tongue. As many as 450 students got their
degrees on the occasion and of them 18 were
university rank holders.
thShift II organized its “Graduation Day” on 10 October,
2015. Hon'ble Mr.Justice. Satish. K.Agnihotri, Madras
High Court was the Chief Guest. In his address, he
emphasized the importance of ethical values as the
students enter into the new stage of life. He mentioned
that the key to excellence can be achieved by
passionately following their goals.He also touched
upon the four stages (Ashramas) of life: Brahmachari
(Student life), Grihasta (Family life), Vanaprastha
(retired life) and Sanyasa (renunciation)”. 494
Graduates received the degrees on this occasion.

Integration Camp held at Dimapur (North Eastern

NSS - MANKIND'S SUPREME BENEFACTOR
The NSS unit organized an orientation program for the thfirst year NSS volunteers on 24 August 2015.The
resource person was Mr. Edwin Thomson, Retd., HoD,
Dept. of Economics, Guru Nanak College, Chennai. He
enlightened the students on social service,
cleanliness, hard work and inspired the gathering to
serve the society and the country to the best of one's
ability. Over 200 first year NSS volunteers attended the
orientation programme.
NSS Unit received "Shield Award" from “Association of
Voluntary Blood Donors”, Adyar, Chennai for mobilising
200 units of Blood.
SPORTS ARENA
In Cricket, at the National Level, Aparajith, III B.Com got
selected for India A team. At the State Level, the
students selected for the Tamil Nadu Ranji Cricket
team are: Aparajith-III B.Com.,Indrajith-III B.Com.,
(Vice Captain), Sharukh Khan-III B.Com, B.Rahul-II
MA.Eco., and S.Lokeshwar, D.Anchit and S.Aravind.

Our college teams actively took part in sports events
organized by Madras University A-Zone. The positions
received by our students are Cricket – Winners, Kho
Kho – Runners, Handball(Men)-Runners, Table Tennis-
Runners, Basketball(Men)-III Place, Football(Men)-
IVPlace.
In Inter-collegiate Sports Events, our college Kho kho
team won the runner up position in “Buck Tournament”
conducted by YMCA college of Physical Education.
Throw Ball(Men) team won the First Position in
Independence Day cup conducted by SDAT Chennai.
LIBRARY AND INFORMATION CENTRE-YOUTH
RENAISSANCE DAY
The Department of Library, in association with
Noolagam Pesugiradhu (Tamil Magazine), Society for
Advancement in Library Science and Kalam Sindhanai
Peravai organised a one day seminar in th
commemoration of the 84 birthday of our beloved
People's President Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam as “Youth
Renaissance Day”. Inter-collegiate competitions in
essay, Poetry and drawing were conducted under the
topics “Kalamin Kanavu India” and “Ennai Kavarndha
Kalam”, for the college students from Chennai,
Thiruvallur and Kanchipuram districts. About 323
students from 31 colleges participated. Winners were
awarded cash prizes and certificates. The Chief Guest
was Mr.Manjit Singh Nayar, Gen. Secretary and
Correspondent. Noolagam Pesugiradhu – the

co-organizer honoured the best School, College and
Public Librarians from Tamilnadu. The eminent
Resource persons were Speaker Mrs.Bharathi Baskar,
Dhinamani Cartoonist Mr.Mathi, Maruthuvar.
Ku.Sivaraman and the popular speaker in media talk
show, Prof. Parveen Sultana.
DEPARTMENT OF TAMIL
The Department of Tamil organised “Muthamizh Vizha th“on 19 October 2015. Mr. Samas, Writer, The Hindu-
Tamil, was the Chief Guest. He spoke about the role of
media in today's world. Students gained immense
knowledge about Tamil Sangam.
A team of students participated and exhibited their
creativity such as poems, short stories, skits & plays in
Youth Programme, Ilaya Bharatham, All India Radio,
Chennai. Padaiparangam is an innovative forum to
bring to light the Creative works of Students. Every
week –students gather on all Wednesdays and stage
their creative works.
On the occasion of 113 th birth anniversary of Kamaraj ,
the former Chief Minister,The Department of Tamil and
Samadarma Samudayakamaraj jointly conducted thoratorical and essay writing competitions on 10 July
2015, over fifty students participated in the
competitions and won various prizes.
The central vigilance commission and Indian Oil
Corporation jointly conducted various competitions on
the concept of Anti corruption on 28th October, 2015 in
which around thirty of our students participated and
won prizes.
DEPARTMENT OF HINDI
The Department of Hindi, organised a workshop st
“Uccharan Karya Shala”, on 21 August,2015. Mr.Uday
Meghani, All India Radio, Chennai, was the resource
person and addressed around 80 students on the
importance of the language. “Parichaya”- A two-week
Hindi learning camp for non Hindi students was
organised and around 95 students participated and
they learnt to read, write and speak basic Hindi words
and sentences.
DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH
LSRW- THE FOUR PILLARS OF SUCCESS
To succeed in any career, the four skills namely
Listening (L), Speaking(S), Reading(R) and Writing (W)
[in short LSRW must be present in every student.The
Department of English, conducted a workshop on thLSRW skills for the first year students on 24 of July
2015. The resource person Sri. Kanteesh Kumar, CEO,
COMMUWAY highlighted the importance of having
LSRW skills and why students must develop these
skills to succeed in any career.
DEPARTMENT OF BBA
The BBA Department, organized a guest lecture on the
topic C2C-Campus to Corporate for the II and III year th
students.on 13 August 2015.The resource person was
Dr.Ramanathan, Senior Executive, Tata Consultancy
Services, Chennai. He stressed on having practical
skills rather than just having theoretical knowledge, to
attain success.
BANKING AND FINANCE-CATALYSTS TO CAREER
DEVELOPMENT
It is very important for students of commerce and
management to know about the opportunities involved
in banking and finance., A seminar was conducted on th
the topic Opportunities in Banking and Finance on 7
July 2015 for the first year students of commerce and
BBA. The resource person Mr.Ayappan
Ramamoorthy, Former IIM, Ahmedabad and MD, Ab
Southern Energy Solutions & Benjamin Franklin –
Consultant – NESTO, focused on the essentials and
scope of banking and financial services.

DEPARTMENT OF BCA
The Department of Computer Application (BCA) th
conducted a workshop on “Interview Skills” on 7 , Aug-
2015. Mr.Aravindhan, Assistant Manager HR from
Syntel discussed the key points required for attaining
success in an interview. He also stressed on the
different skills necessary to survive in today's
Corporate. Around 135 students participated in the
workshop.
DEPARTMENT OF B.Sc. COMPUTER SCIENCE
The Department of Computer Science organized five th
workshops on 16 September, 2015, on the topics Key
concepts in C++ Programming , Creating Web
Application using JSP & Servlets, System Assembling -
Hardware Implementation, Developing Windows
Application using ASP.NET , Workshop on PHP &
MYSQL. Ms. Suriya, Senior Trainer& Oracle Certified
Trainer, NIIT, Mr. Saravanan, Java Certified Domain
Expert, Senior Trainer, NIIT, Mr.Shanker & Team ,
GNC System Admin, Ms. Manimegela, Microsoft
Certified Technology Specialist & DOT NET Certified
Trainee, NIIT, and Mr.Mohan, Corporate Trainer,
Opportunity Infotech, were the resource persons.
Students of all the three years of the department
participated and gained experiential learning on their
respective domains.
A Workshop was conducted on “Resume writing”
Dr.Shakila, Director, Department of MBA, GNC, the
resource person briefed on the key factors required for
an effective curriculum-vitae which proved useful for
the final year students.
DEPARTMENT OF VISUAL COMMUNICATION
thwThe Department welcomed the freshers on 10 July
2015. Dr.Gunita Arun Chandhok, Director advised
the students on the scope of media studies and to
become proficient in photography, Documentary
making, Film making, Drawing, which would add
value to their course.
thwThe Department initiated a “Film club” on 7 July
2015 which would screen a movie once a week
followed by a session of movie review.

an effective media professional”, “Candid
Photography”, “Videography”, “Art of acting &
Advanced technologies of 3D Animation” on August st nd th st st

RESEARCH IN COMMERCE
Commerce Association inaugurated its “COM FEST TH
2015-16” ON 11 September 2015. Mr.Govindhrajan,
Labour Welfare Officer, Kaleesuwari Refineries
Pvt.Ltd., the chief guest delivered an interesting,
thought provoking speech on self-awareness, self
confidence, building leadership quality and focused
team work.

COMMERCE FEST IN CAMPUS
The Departments of Commerce and Management storganized “XPLORE 360°”, a workshop sequence -1
thEdition on 20 August 2015, under 11 different titles on
investment planning, people management, hospitality,
animation, retailing, insurance, branding & marketing,
corporate social responsibility, career in aviation,
advertising and trends in banking services, with the aim
to ignite the inquisitiveness among the students and to
explore the awareness beyond curriculum. Over 600
students attended these workshops with eminent
resource persons from the corporate sector.

Commerce Fest was organised by nine departments
namely the assorted Departments of Commerce, BBA nd
and MBA on 22 September 2015.It was inaugurated
by Dr.S.Ramachandran, Director-HR and Business
Strategy, AMET University, the Chief Guest. The event
consisted of nine subject oriented contests of novel
approach such as Bizniz Twist, Corporate Walk,Wise
Venture, Bizniz App, Pack N Move, Spoof, Channel
Surfing, Brainy Bytes and Bizniz Incubator. Dr.Gunita
Arun Chandok in her address highlighted that “students
need to apply conceptual knowledge into practice
through such contests and they are the brand
ambassadors of the college who had to carry the flag of
the college to greater heights by winning laurels both in
inter- collegiate and intra-collegiate fests”. Over 1100
students participated in various events and 18 experts
from Corporate and Academia judged the various
events and gave valuable tips to the participants.

FINANCE
The Department of B.Com (A&F) organized a lecture
on the topic "Importance of English in day to day life" on s t31 July 2015.The speaker was Dr.Savithri
Swaminathan, Asst.Prof ,Dept of English, Guru Nanak
College, Chennai, She highlighted the importance of
having English interlocution, writing and reading skills.
Her lecture proved beneficial for over 250 students.
Seminar on “Professional Career and Job Opportunities th
beyond B.Com Degree," was organized on 15
September 2015.The speaker, Mr.R.S.Sivaraman FCA,
ACS, Practising Chartered Accountant & Company
Secretary, gave insights into the various career
opportunities available in Banking & Insurance Sector.
He highlighted the facilities available in Chennai which
can help the students in clearing CA, CS & CWA exams
with ease. He also made a mention about international
courses like CIMA, ACCA & IFRS .

Department of B.Com. (C.S) organized a workshop
on the topic "Career Development Programme on th
Corporate Secretaryship" on 27 July 2015. The
resource persons were Mr. Mohan Kumar- Member of
ICSI Unit and Ms. Chitra Anatharaman, Deputy Director,
ICSI Unit. They highlighted the importance of pursuing
the Company Secretaryship course and motivated the
students to pursue a career in the field of Corporate
Secretaryship.

Vedavalli Parthasarathy explained why yoga was
important and then had taught some basic asanas to

B.Com MM. The resource persons were Ms. Priya Ram
(Head Trainer) and Ms. Bhooma Sriram (Lead Trainer)
from Bell Soft Learning and Development Pvt.Ltd,
Chennai. The session threw light on how
communication can make or break careers and in fact
live demonstrations were given to students in an
interesting and interactive manner.

Nalakeerai Ltd., provided M.Com students an
opportunity to visit the organic farming situated near
Pakkam, to explore entrepreneurial development and

2 Seminars were organised by the Department of MCA
to impart knowledge on PHP with MYSQL. Vipin M
Jacob - CEO Avancer Software Solution, taught
students how to use PHP Hypertext Pre-processor
(PHP) programming language that helps them to plan
their career as web developers.
Mr. Kasim , CEO Opportunity InfoTech, briefed the th
students on 28 August 2015, on web services and how
these services can be used with different technologies
like .Net, Java.

The MBA Department organised workshops to tap and
nurture the managerial skills of the MBA students. Five
workshops were conducted under the topics “Threats in
E-Banking” on 1st July,2015 , “Retail Internship
Programme” on 10th July 2015, “Stock Market
Operation” on 17th July 2015, “Alumni Talk” on 21st July
2015, “Commodity Market Operation- Future Market”
on 22nd July 2015.The resource persons for the

Chennai Flood and Initiatives @ GNC Rescue Relief

……… and the journey continues.
During the recent floods in Chennai city, Guru Nanak College was actively involved in rescue and relief operations under the stewardship of Mr.A.K.Viswanathan, IPS, Additional Director General of Police, Mr. Manjit Singh Nayar, General Secretary & Correspondent and Dr.M.Selvaraj, Principal, Guru Nanak College. They were ably assisted by a team of Volunteers. Guru Nanak College was one of the control centres for delivery and distribution of essentials to the flood victims. Rescue operations were carried out with courage and zeal and more than 250 people were evacuated from Tansinagar coconut grove, Velachery, which was one of the most affected areas in Chennai. Commitment and dedication accentuated in the Relief operations. Guru Nanak College langar kitchen was utilized to prepare food packets for distribution. Over 2 lakhs food packets , water bottles, over 5000 breads, 7500 boxes of biscuits , 2 truck loads of fresh vegetables from Ooty, and huge quantities of medicines, clothes, blankets, bedsheets, candles, matchboxes, toiletries etc were distributed.
