Importance of Lesson(Dari)

• Attempts are made to prevent emergencies from happening. Though many emergency situations can be prevented emergencies still occur.

• Being prepared to deal with emergencies can help to reduce the negative impacts of emergencies.

• One method is to have already prepared emergency kits containing equipment and other medical supplies that may be required.

Considerations in Kit DesignDari

AFAMS

Insert DariThere are three simple questions that must be asked in designing an medical emergency kit:

1.Who will be using the kit?

2.Where will this kit be used?

3.How long until evacuation to a higher level of care?

AFAMS

Who will be using the kit?Dari

AFAMS

Insert Dari1.Level of training:– Physicians have a vast skill set while

Combat Medics are limited to specific protocols. Therefore, physicians can require more medical supplies and equipment.

2.Specialty qualifications such as Flight Surgeon. They may require specialized equipment.

AFAMS

Where will the kit be used?Dari

AFAMS

Insert Dari1.Types of injuries expected: Gunshot wounds, blast injuries, to simple injuries.

2.Location: Due to the isolation of a patrol additional equipment may be required. E.g. On patrol vs in hospital

3.Temperature: Certain medications and medical supplies must be stored at certain temperatures and therefore, may be inappropriate for kit use.

4.Size/ Weight: The kit bag will be of limited size and must fit all supplies. These kits will be carried and therefore, this restricts the weight of individual pieces of the kit.

How long until evacuation to a higher level of care?

Dari

AFAMS

Insert Dari1.Evacuation supplies: – casualty tags, communication reports…

2.Increased time to evacuation:– More equipment and medical supplies

required to keep patients stabilized.– Additional medical interventions may be

required necessitating additional kit.

Making Recommendations for KitsDari

AFAMS

Insert Dari

• Emergency Kits are standardized to ensure the same equipment is available in all kits

– It also ensures items that are not required or are not cost-effective are not used

– It limits waste

• It is not uncommon that changes to kits are required due to:

– Changes in treatment protocols– Lack of supply from Manufacturer– New equipment that is more cost-effective– Failure of equipment or supplies in the field

• Requests for addition and/or removal of kit should be written to MEDCOM.

– Ensures standardization– Cost-effectiveness review
