I can ’t concew e of any spiritually minded m an com­in g on th e scene here a t N am pa and giv ing the College th e “ once oyer” w ithout exclaim ing, “ H itherto h a th ’ th e Lord helped u s .” Then as they go deeper into the p a s t h isto ry of th e in stitu tion and m ark its progress and w onderful success as to the p reachers and mission­aries on the field, the large num ber on the w aiting list, th e m ost excellen t s tuden t body, and la s t bu t not least th e God-given facu lty , he will be constrained to say n o t only “ H ath God helped us thus f a r , ” b u t “ He who hath begun the good w ork will also finish i t . ”

W ith the above though t in our m inds we have called for a n igh t of p ray e r to be observed W ednesday,Dec. 21 a t the N am pa N azarene church , in which the faculty , studen t body, church m em bers and friends will un ite as the p ray er o f one man and beseech God to help us com plete th is school y ea r w ith banners flying, hav ing paid every teacher in full and o u r College d eb t g rea tly reduced.

We know th a t money is scarce, b u t we firmly believe th a t God can do th is much fo r us. We also here­by request every p asto r who reads th ese lines to call his church to unite in p rayer w ith us. I f th is notice reaches you too la te fo r Dec. 21 m ake i t Dec. 28. L et us all enquire e a r­nestly of the Lord.

“ The kingdom of heaven suffereth violence and the violent tak e it by fo rc e .” I am sure th a t our heaven­ly F a th e r would have us to learn our u t te r dependence upon Him. He has b rough t us to a place w here a m iracle m ust be perform ed and all the glory given to God, if we succeed. He has b rough t us to a place like unto th a t w here He brought the children of Israel when th e re was no way lo re treac , and y e t no way to go ahead because of the Red sea in fro n t o f them . T hat is, th e re was no way as fa r as th e children of Israel could see, y e t God knew how He would deliver them , and through th a t deliverance give them a lesson th a t would be a blessing to the children o f God down through th e ages, and if a blessing why not an exam ple.

I am convinced th a t God proposes th a t the College here in N am pa is to have a very im portan t p a r t in the successful fu tu re history of our God-called denom ina­tion. I am sure we cannot have the las t if we do not have the first. I do not care to s it as a judge of th e b re thren , bu t P fee l constrained to say th a t we do no t have one-

ten th the sacrifice in our church now th a t we had in its early history. There are num bers th a t a re still a t the job while th ere a re a g re a t many m ore who are m aking no sacrifice a t all, and a re dem anding tw ice as m uch fo r th e ir labors as they could g e t a t any o ther line o f work. This negative side of the sub jec t isn ’t p leasan t to think of, le t alone w rite about hence we dism iss i t a t once w ith, “ Thanking God it is only the negative s id e .” The positive side of the sub jec t w as voiced by our sa in t­ly and sain ted founder, (D r. P. F. Bresee) when he invited preachers and evangelists to come am ong us w ith the words of G aribaldi, namely, “ We offer you hunger, nakedness, persecution, death and lib e r ty .” I t m eant som ething to tak e your stand w ith the despised few in those days and thank God i t m eant som ething in m ore w ays than one. I fo r one can tes tify th a t I have lived upon mashed potatoes, flour gravy , and divine glory fo r w eeks a t a tim e. And Oh! the songs in th e night!

Well, I am try in g to say th a t we have a tra in ing cam p over nere in N am pa fo r ju s t such kind of fu tu re w arrio rs. This is the line God has called us to, and I am sure God will see us through, and this in stitu tion will be the m eans in God’s hands o f supply­ing the N azarene church w ith evangelists, pasto rs and m issionaries w ith bu t one ob jec t in view, th a t is, to lay­down th e ir lives for th e cause of C hrist. You will a t once see th a t by so doing they will have much to do with the fu tu re h isto ry of our church.

THE CHURCH IN HER PERFECTED GLORY

The A postle John w as on the lonely Isle of Patm os fo r the word of God and th e testim ony of Jesus C hrist. W hile in the S p irit on the L ord’s day ,’ he was suddenly aroused by a g re a t voice behind him as of a trum pet, and commanded to w rite in a book, th e scenes of th e g re a t panoram a which w as soon to pass before him, as th e revelation of Jesus C hris t which God gave him to shew unto his servan ts the

a t tb e close of tbe book, in which the in fan t Church, then stru g g lin g fo r existence am idst the persecutions of the Ro­m an governm ent, is portrayed in the trium ph of her perfec­tion as th e holy City, New Jerusalem , descending ou t of heaven from God. W hat holy deligh t m ust have filled the h e a rt of John the Beloved, as he gazed w ith rap tu re fipon the trium phs of God’s g race! B ut the vision w as no t for the Apostle alone, i t was w ritten fo r us in these la s t days, and our own souls a re filled w ith rap tu re this m orning as th rough the eyes of God’s anointed one, we gaze upon the splendors o f our soon coming trium ph.

(I) The Holy City, New Jerusalem, which John saw, is a picture of the Church as God sees her now, and as we shall see her in her perfected glory.

I do no t h esita te to m ake this assertion , fo r the Scrip tures a re specific. They s ta te definitely th a t the city which John saw w as the Bride, th e L am b’s wife. I t is not heaven,’ as some suppose, fo r John saw i t descending ou t of heaven from God. And y e t in ano ther sense i t will be heaven to us fo r in the m idst of th is holy, city , th e re dwells th e shekinah glory of God’s p resence; fo r th is city has no need of the sun fo r th e glory of God ligh tens i t and the Lam b is the light thereo f.

W e can never know how greatly God loves his people, or how d ear to him is his Church. To m ore nearly approach the expression of His infinite love, he p o rtray s th e Church under th e sym bolical use of precious and ra re gfemS, and m akes an appeal to the love of the beau tifu l whic^ is im ­plan ted in every hum an b reas t. In the beauty of unchang­ing gem s, God has chosen to express his love which m ere w ords could never convey.

The beauty of tbe precious stones which p ic tu re to us the holy city is glowingly se t fo rth in the description of the R us­sian jew els by an A m erican scholar and poet. He says “ The splendor of th e ir tin ts is a delicious intoxication to the eye. The soul of all the fiery roses of Perses lives in these rub ies; th e freshness of all velvet sw ard, w he ther in Alpine valley or English lawn, in these em eralds; th e bloom of all th e southern seas in these sapphires; and the essence of a thou­sand h arv es t moons in these necklaces of p e a r l .’’

The city of E cbatana , the cap ita l of Media w as built upon a hill and enclosed in walls, one of which w as red, ano ther blue, ano ther g reen, and th e inner walls w ere o f silver and gold. I t is said th a t the city g listen ing in the sun ligh t could be seen fo r m iles and had the appearance o f a beau tifu l rainbow.

But E cbatana w ith its ea rth ly .splendor is no t to be com­pared w ith th e glories of th e city which John saw . I ts wall was o f jasp e r, c lea r as cry s ta l, and the foundations of the wall w ere garnished w ith all m anner of precious stones. I f we approach the city from the E ast, th e glory of God shin­ing through the ja sp e r walls and the foundations of Ja sp e r,

“And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem descending out of heaven from God.” Rev. 21:10.

sapphire and chalcedony, w ith th e ir red and blue and w hite m akes a p ic tu re o f incom parable beauty.

T a me, i t has seem ed th a t th e re m igh t possibly be some national significance to th e colors of th e precious stones which m ake up th e wall o f th is city , and th a t the E aste rn g a te w ith its red and w hite and blue m ight be our p a r t in the city. But th is I do know, th a t as N azarenes we have had an understand ing w ith each .other th a t we would linger near the E aste rn g a te for the glad reunion tim e. W hat glo­rious tim e of m eeting th a t will be. How m any of our num ­ber, since those early days have passed on before us and now aw ait us in th e final resu rrec tion or the soon coming of Jesus. How blessed i t will be to again clasp glad hands w ith our sain ted founder. Dr. B resee and th a t host of heroes who have m eant so much to our branch of th e Church of God on e a rth ; and w hat glory shall be ours when we see Jesus, and freed from all suffering and perp lex ity and tem ptation , we shall s it down w ith Je su s a t th e g re a t m arriage supper of the Lamh, and drink the new wine o f th e K ingdom which knows no end.

I f we approach th is city from th e N o rth , the green and w hite and red o f the em erald , the sardonyx and th e sardius blend in glorious harm ony; and on th e W est, th e chrysolite , the beryl and the topaz unite th e ir ray s o f golden g reen , rich blue and yellow; while on the South the gold and purp le o f th e chrysoprassus, the jac in th and th e am eth y st blend in th e perfection of beauty .

(11) I f the Holy City represents the Church then the walls of this city are symbolical of the character of her people.

This though t firs t flashed upon my mind while read ing th e beautifu l hymn of B ernard. The particu la r s tan za is th is :

“ W ith Ja sp e r glow thy bulw arks.Thy s tre e ts w ith em erald blaze;

The sardius and the topaz U nite in thee th e ir ray s ;

Thine ageless walls a re bounded .W ith am eth y st unpriced;

Thy sa in ts build up the fabricAnd the corner stone is C h ris t.’’

and the world is nothing less than the charac te r of her peo­ple. And as the wall was twofold in its construction, the wall of Jasp e r and the garnishings of precious stones in the foundation, so Christian charac te r is twofold, comprising first of all, the endowment of the Spirit , and secondly, the individuality of particular Christians. I t is not education or culture or refinement which makes a Christian; a Christian is one who has been born of the Spir it , and “ if any man have no t the Spirit of Christ, he is none of h is .” As the wall was all of Jasper , so one Spirit dwells alike in all Christians as th e ac tua ting power o f the ir lives, “ for by one Spir it have we all been baptized into one body and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

But while Christians a re born of the Spir it , they still re ­tain their part icu lar individuality. God does no t destroy any e lem ent in the essential na ture of man when he saves him, bu t he does forgive his sins and cleanse away the guil t and pollution of sin; and when he sanctifies him wholly, he des­troys the carnal mind, the being of sin; bu t he res tores his na tura l powers and preserves them in nev'ness of life.

{Ill) It is in the Church that the individual finds his place in the social order.

The wall which John saw was a beautiful blending of the individual with the social order. The problems of the world a re largely those of the ad ju s tm en t o f the individual to so­ciety. Much of the evil and suffering is due to the fac t th a t the individual is crushed down by a wrong social order. The problem of the ad jus tm en t of the general and the part icular pervades every phase of life. In government, the world swings between monarchy and anarchy. In the ecclesiastic­al world, there is popery a t one ex trem e and come-out-ism a t the other. The lower socialists te 'l us th a t if we bu t re ­construct the social order, the individual man will be relieved o f all his evils. But Russia has made the experiment and has hopele.ssly failed. The seeds of sin and decay are in the na tu re of man himself. I t is impossible to build a righteous social order ou t of sinful individuals. But I see in the walls o f the city of the New Jerusa lem , th a t there is a time com­ing when God will construct a social order and fit the indi­viduals into this wall in such a manner, th a t the individual will come to his own and shine in splendor because of their differences, aud the social order itse lf in all its complexity will be more transcendently glorious because of the variety o f individuals which make up its perfection.

I t has been said th a t man began his existence in a garden and finishes i t in a city. The cities of this world are centers of sin and crime and cruel suffering. But Sir! here I see a city twelve hundred miles square, and with all its g rea tness and wiih all its complexity, it is so perfectly organized, it iat there is no more death, neither sorrow nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain, for former th ings are passed away. This city is so holy th a t it has no temple therein bu t itself is a holy of holies. This city has no need of med­iated light, for the glory of G< d lights it and the Lamb is the light thereof. And there shall be no more curse but the throne of God and o f the Lam b shall be in it, and his s e r ­vants shall serve him; and they shall see his face and his name shall be in their foreheads.

(IV) The precious gems which form the foundations o f the holy city, represent the transforming power o f divine grace upon the lives of individuals of our fallen race.

The Church is built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone. And in the foundation stones of this holy city are to be found

the names of the Apostles as the g re a t represen ta t ives of our race transform ed by the grace of God.

W hat are those precious gems which glow with splendor in the wall of Jasper? W hat is the composition o f our na­tural gems? Ruskin has a beautifu l p a rag raph in which he calls our a ttention to the homely origin of our most precious stones. Emeralds and sapphires he points out are but com­mon clay transform ed by fire under g re a t pressure; opals are common sand, and diamonds ordinary soot which have under­gone a like process.

When I read this, I said, I now unders tand why our Lord used these precious stones as symbols of our individuality. I t is because of their lowly origin th a t their beauty magni­fies the power th a t transform ed them. And I saw th a t our lowly origin, and our sinful condition could be remedied by the mighty transform ing power of the grace of God. I saw th a t God could take folks who were made of common clay, putty foH<s, spineless mortals with no power to withstand the forces of evil, and if he could g e t them to hold steady under g re a t pressure, and the fiery baptism of the Holy Ghjst , he would so transform them th a t they would reflect all the green and blue rays of heavenly light.

I saw also th a t God could transform common sand, th a t peculiar class of individuals who form the d is turbing ele­ments in society, who seem to have but one mission and tha t to ir r i ta te others. You all know these people. I f a church or a community is living in peace, with everyth ing running as smooth as oil, when these people come, friction begins a t once. They are the trial of your life. Well Sir! I f God can g e t these people under pressure and under fire, he will so transform them th a t they wfll reflect the burning red rays of spiritual life. But if there are some who have sunken so low th a t they are worse than the slimy mud of a back alley; if with the slime there is mixed the black soot from the fac­tory smokestacks of sin and crime, until it defiles all th a t it touches, is there transform ing power in the grace of God for these? Sir, I am happy to tell you this morning, th a t God by his power can put even these under pressure and under fire, and when they are transformed and ready for the s e t ­t ing in the foundation of the heavenly city, the black carbon will be changed into the g li tte ring diamond which will reflect not only the blue rays of heavenly light, or the fiery red

“And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.” Rev. 22:1.

rays, but all the ravs of the Sun of Righteousness. W h a t marvelous power there is in divine grace, th rough our Lord Jesus Christ. My soul is thrilled within me as I look upon

the w alls of th a t heavenly city , and see th e possibilities of our poor race th rough Jesus C hrist our Lord.

(V) Every variety of individual temperament finds a place in the wall of the Heavenly City.

I f th e nam es of the A postles a re found in the foundation stones as rep resen ta tiv es of the new race; and if again these beau tifu l gem s a re b u t th e crude elem ents of ea rth tra n s ­form ed by divine g race; we a re privileged then to in te rp re t these precious stones as th e varied types of individuals found in th e Church of C hrist. T here is the fiery red class, the deep rich blue, the variegated yellow, g listen ing w hite and trap sp a ren t, the common bu t lovely g reen and th e royal p u r­ple.

J u s t here we would call a tten tio n to a language o f color as found in the W ord of God. T here is a significance too delicate fo r o rdinary speech. W hen God would p ictu re him ­se lf to m ortal eyes, he does so as a ja sp e r and a sardine stone, whose purple ray s are th e re su lt o f the blending of the end rays of th e spectrum , the in fra-red and ultra-vio let. I t is as if he sa 'd , “ I am the first and the last, th e beginning and th e en d .” Or if the figure be tran sfe rred to the realm of language, as if he had said, “ I am the alpha and omega, th e beginning and th e en d .” W hen C hrist p ic tu res him self in his m ediatorial work, i t is as a rainbow around the throne like unto an em erald in color. G reen has no com plem entary color. I ts com plem ent is the purple which form s the end ray s of th e spectrum . C hris t in his tru e hum anity is the com plem ent of God. I f then we use these colors in the ir o r­d inary significance th e ir m utuaP ble-d ing is indicative of the harm ony of types which prevail in the Church of God.

1. T here is the fiery red class, rep resen ted by th e ja sp e r w ith its reddish tin t and th e sard ius of deeper hue. W e. all know and love these fiery folks. They a re zealous and en­thusiastic . When they speak the fire falls. W hen they pray , one loves to creep up close by th e ir side a t the a lta r. They know how to w arm , bu t they also know how to scorch and blister. They can preach heavenly fire until the church is all aglow, and they can preach hell fire until sinners trem ­ble and tu rn to God. Would th a t we had a church full of these folks. Lord send us m ore fire!

2. T here is th e type rep resen ted by the blue stones in the garn ish ing of th e wall. Blue is a lovely color and is perhaps th e m ost widely diffused in n a tu re . The skies above, the sea, the m ountains all tak e on vary ing shades of th is lovely hue. I t is significant of tru th , o f stab ility , of dependable­ness. W e have some of these people am ongst us, and we love them m ore as the days go by. You can depend upon them today, tom orrow and th e n ex t day. I f there a re hard th ings to be done, these people do them and do them well. I t is tru e th a t som etim es they may be tem pted to the “ blues” bu t God in his good providence has placed them n ex t to the fiery red class in th e wall of ja sp e r fo r th e ir m utual benefit.

3. The yellow stones are peculiarly applicable to those wbo a re ablaze w ith th e glory of God. T here are those who know how to g e t b lest. T heir lives seem alw ays pervaded by the Shekinah presence, and a peculiar unction re s ts upon the ir m inistry . I t is significant th a t these stones a re all v ariega­ted . God blesses his people in many w ays; bu t w hether they shout or sing, w hether they are filled w ith holy laugh­te r o r bathed in te a rs , w hether they run or w hether they dance before tb e Lord, they are alw ays a blessing. God give us m ore of these old-time shooters! The Church needs them ; the work of God dem ands them , fo r th e joy of the Lord is our s tren g th .

4. Green is em blem atical o f n a tu ra l human sym pathies.

This is th e color which Jesu s used when he would p icture his m ediatorial w ork. This rep resen ts th a t class of people who bring God to men th rough th e ir p ray e rs and holy living; and bring men to God through ea rn e s t en ­tre a ty and good w orks. These are the men who secre tly give five dollar's to th e m an who is u n fo rtu n a te , or who as­sis t a s trugg ling b ro th er through a difficult financial strugg le . These a re the women who visit the sick, who w atch over lit­tle children, who ca rry supplies and ta s ty food to those who are in need, and whose lives rad ia te sunshine and good cheer everyw here. I would th a t we had a church full of th is class of C hristians. God g ra n t th a t th e ir num ber may ever in­crease.

5. Xhen th ere is the m aste rly type rep resen ted by the royal purple. God has some g re a t leaders in the world. Thank God fo r them . B ut in the kingdom of heaven, he who would be g re a t m ust be se rv an t of all.

(VI) The wall of the city, symbolical of Christian char­acter, is a summary of the experience of all Christians.

W hile I was in college, th e studen ts had a unique custom of m aking a p ilgrim age about th e cam pus, ju s t previous to graduation . The seniors in caps and gow ns would visit the A dm inistration Building and one would m ake a speech on the steps and bid fa rew ell to th e halls which had m eant so much to them . They would then v is it th e Classical Buildings and th e G ym nasium and o th er buildings in tu rn , and some one would m ake a farew ell speech a t every stop.

W hen we g e t to heaven we shall find th a t th e walls o f the city a re so a rran g ed as to fo rever se t before us the g race by which we w ere saved. I have th o u g h t th a t we may all join in one g re a t p ilg rim age around the inside of the walls, and before each foundation stone, stop long enough to give our testim ony. W e shall s ta r t w ith the first stone which is J a s ­per, the only one in the en tire foundation exactly like the wall above it. T here is bu t one m an, the man C hrist Jesus who rep resen ted the fu lness of th e S p irit of God, fo r God gave the S pirit wit>-out m easure to him. We may be filled to our finite capacity , b u t H e w as infinite, and em braced all the fu lness of the Godhead bodily. I t is here th a t we shall tell of the blood of Je su s C hrist w hich washed us from our sins. We shall all w ant to te s tify . T hank God we shall all have opportunity , fo r previous to th is we are told th a t the angel of God had placed one foot on the land and the o ther on th e sea and declared w ith his hand raised to heaven, th a t tim e should be no longer, and every clock in th e universe was annihilated. We shall never be hurried fo r tim e when we g e t over there.

Passing from the chief corner stone, th e n ex t is one of lovely blue, emblem of the tru th . H ere we shall te ll o f th e w itness of the S pirit to the work of God w rough t in our souls and pass on to the n ex t foundation stone which is w hite and translucen t. This is the firs t pu rity th a t comes from being washed from the gu ilt and pollution of sin. I w an t to be there to hear the testim ony of M ary M agdalene and Je r ry MacAuley from W ater S tree t. I can alm ost hear the shouts in advance, as hearts too full fo r u tte ran ce b u rs t ou t in a shou t like the sound of many w aters.

The n ex t foundation stone is the beautifu l em erald, symbol of hope. I can alm ost hear the Apofitle John say. B rethren and S isters, when I was on ea rth I preached holiness se r­mons from th is tex t, th a t “ every man which had this hope in him purifieth him self, even as he is p u re .” And 1 m ust p ress a little closer to hear Paul the A postle say. B rethren , when on ea rth am idst persecutions, am idst perils on land and sea and am ong false b re th ren , I s tead fastly declared

“Blow the trumpet in Zion, sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly:

Gather the people, sanctify the congregation, assemble the elders, gather the children and those that suck the breasts: let the bridegroom go forth of his chamber, and the bride out of her closet.

Let the priests, the ministers of the Lord, weep between the porch and the altar, and let them say. Spare thy people, O Lord, and give not thine heritage to reproach, that the heathen, should rule over them: wherefore should they say among the people. Where is their God?” Joel 2:15-16.

E v ery C hurch of th e N azarene in A m erica and in fo re ig n coun tries w ill w ith th e beg inn ing of th e new year, be engaged in one m igh ty , sim ultaneous e f fo r t fo r th e sa lvation of th e people.

T he people of th e w orld, and especially th e m em bers of lukc-w arm and fo rm a l churches w ill lau g h a t th is e ffo rt, and say “W h at can th ese feeb le N azaren es d o ? ” We answ er, “W e can do n o th in g in ourselves, b u t God h as g iven us a p lan and a prom ise, w hich if follow ed ou t— and som e o f us m ean to follow i t fu lly — w ill in su re success and d e fe a t th e pow ers o f d arkness.”

T he P lan

The Convention was held jo intly by the College and the M issionary Sanitarium and was a rranged not fo r college stu d ­en ts only bvit fo r all who w ere in te res ted in th e study of m iss­ionary problem s.

W e re g re t th a t Rev. T racy was unable to be w ith us on ac­count of sickness in his home. W e w ere able how ever, to a d ju s t d a tes m aking it possible fo r Rev. J . H. Bury, D istric t S uperin tenden t o f the A lberta D istric t to be w ith us. Rev. Bury was fo r years a m issionary in South A frica and also in New O ntario, Canada and his m essages w ere edifying and in­spiring . The m eetings w ere well a ttended and g rea tly a p ­preciated .

Dr. M angum . Dean of the M issionary Sanitarium gave two lec tu res during the Convention. The f irs t on Personal H y­giene w as a rranged especially fo r Missionary studen ts; the follow ing lec tu re w as given to M issionary E m ergencies and presen ted in a la rg er way the need of Medical Missions. The second lecture w as given F riday evening and illu stra ted very ap tly w ith rep resen ta tions of concrete cases which our m issionaries m eet from day to day on the fields.

ty to ta lk over in a p riva te way w ith Bro. Bury, th e ir own m issionary leadings. able answ ers to p ray er in tim es of need. The blessing of God rested upon the speaker and th e people in a rem arkab le m anner, and illu stra tions in se lf sacrifice and believing p ray ­e r w ere given th a t will be of uutold help to the studen ts looking forw ard to C hristian work.

Home and Foreign MissionsWe are accustom ed to use the te rm s home m issions and

fo re ign missions. These a re convenient te rm s, bu t we som e­tim es think th a t too much is made of the distinction. In G od’s sigh t one work is ju s t as precious as th e o ther. Still, while one cannot flourish w ithout the o th er we m ust adm it th a t in the n a tu ra l o rder of th ings fo re i 'n mission work m ust follow, and to a g re a te r or less d eg ree ’ depend upon the w ork in the home field. And if we neg lec t home missions th e foreign will suffer. Both branches of the work m ust go on in the proper ra tio to each o ther.

Some m ay say th a t our work on the foreign field is already in advance of th a t in the home land; th a t we should cease to em phasize th is phase of th e work and develop home missions. I can not say th a t I ag ree w ith th is. I would suggest th a t th e foreign w orkers continue to push th e ir work and th a t we who are to labor in the home land bring our work up to its proper standing. To some e x te n t we have neglected our job . There is obviously bu t one th ing to do and th a t is to profit by our m istake and g e t to work. I hope we shall hear from the pulpit such m essages as we have never heard before on th e sub jec t o f home m issions; I hope home missions will be such a sub jec t of p ray er by the la ity of our church th a t in te re s t in this phase of th e w ork will be renew ed and a mul­titude prepared to shoulder th e burden th a t m ust be borne.

We m ight consider a few of the w ays and m eans by which th e w ork may be forw arded. In the firs t place we need a g re a te r num ber of pastors so th a t th e d is tr ic t superin tenden t will no t have to scour the country fo r six m onths to find preachers enough to fill the vacancies. I t did no t tak e Uncle Sam long to ra ise an arm y for F rance . I f vo lun teers will no t come a t the call we m ust storm th e heavens w ith p ray er un til God serves a d ra f t notice on some of our young people. To illu s tra te : In our tra in in g sta tion a t N am pa the num ber o f young people p reparing fo r the foreign field fa r exceeds th e num ber of those who a re p reparing fo r the home field. Some of our churches are sending tw o or th ree young peo­ple here to p repare fo r the foreign field w ithout a single one fo r the home field. This will never do; s ta tis tic s quote four p reachers in the home field fo r each m issionary in the foreign field. L et us hold before our people the im portance o f this w ork and pray the heavens open, th a t the Holy G host may

HOME MISSIONS

Rev. N. B. H errell, the general sec re ta ry and tre a s ­u re r of the Board of Home Missions and Evangelism visited the College during the M issionary Convention and spoke to the studen ts in chapel and also preached on Sunday evening to a large and appreciative audi­ence. The Home Mission Band a t the College is doing excellent work in ra ising funds on the D istric t and also in holding m eetings w ith the churches.

Bro. T racy has arranged for several of the s tu d en ts to hold a revival in the Burns Church during the holi­days. Bro. M eggers pasto r a t C laytonia has also a r ­ranged for a series of m eetings w ith the Home Mis­sion Band. Miss M ortim ore and Miss W aller are en ­gaged in a m eeting w ith Bro. LaRose a t Pendleton.

The services on Friday and S atu rday w ere owned and blessed of the Lord, but the clim ax cam e on Sunday. Bro­th e r Davis preached in the m orning on the sub jec t of Home Missions, and the band as well as the church caugh t a new vision of the lost and perishing. A t 2:30 B ro ther Davis and the m em bers o f the party had a p latform m eeting in the in­te re s t of Home Missions. The q u a rte t. Misses Dean and M eggers, Mr. H a rt and Mr. C arver, sang a t all the services and the blessing of the Lord was surely upon the ir singipg. In the evening a f te r a short fiery address on the home work by H arold H art, B rother Davis preached a s tirr in g m essage. About 10 souls sought the Lord and some w ere happy finders thank God.

I f the board had the money to pu t good stro n g p reachers in such places and support them for aw hile, good churches could be s ta rted . I know of a few th a t have been s ta r te d by ju s t one or tw o individuals who stood behind a w orthy man w ith th e ir p rayers and money, and the Lord opened up a work. Would i t no t be w onderful if one thous­and N azarenes on th is d is tric t would come to the aid o f the d is tr ic t home mission board w ith tw o dollars betw een now and the first of th e year? I know th a t tim es a re hard, bu t if we will p u t our shoulders to the wheel I believe th a t we can do it, and I know th a t God will bless us in doing it. The Thanksgiving ServiceA g re a t T hanksgiving service was held in th e church a t

10:00 o’clock T hanksgiving morning. This service will be long rem em bered by many of those p resen t for the peculiar unction and glory which res ted upon the people. A fte r the opening service of song and p ray er th ere was a special song by the m ale q u a rte t appropriate to the day. S is te r W in­ch este r read the ninety-second Psalm and B ro ther Ing ler b rought ano ther m essage in song. A fte r a few rem arks by th e pasto r, the m eeting was opened fo r expressions of g ra t i­tude and thanksg iv ing and soon the glory was rolling in tides. The sa in ts sang, shouted, m arched and shouted again. I t broke ou t all over the house and the pow er of God was re ­m arkably m anifest. The atm osphere seem ed heavenly and m any w ent aw ay declaring th a t th is w as th e best thanks­giving service they had ev er a ttended . T here w ere about 400 presen t.

B ut as is o ften th e case, God som etim es gives a peculiar u p lif t of hope ju s t previous to conviction fo r holiness. The n ex t stone is w hite w ith a dark background. The purity of th e C hristian until sanctified wholly is concerned w ith the w ashing of regenera tion , b u t th e carnal mind still rem ains. I t is here we shall tell how God le t in th e ligh t and revealed to us our unholy condition, and we hasten on to the n ex t foundation stone which is a deep red, the blood th a t cleanses from all sin. Every sanctified person will w an t p lenty of tim e to tell his experience and every person th ere will be sanctified wholly. T here is no m ore red in th e en tire color schem e, fo r once cleansed from th e carnal mind the sin ques­tion is se ttled and se ttled fo rever while we rem ain in this g race.

The n ex t is the golden green of the chrysolite, th e first glory of th e fully purified soul, and enlarged sym pathies for th e dying about us, a t home and abroad. I t is here th a t we shall hear th e m issionaries tell th e ir sto ries and recount th e ir experiences, I w an t to hear Annie T aylor te ll h er ex­periences in opening T ibet. I w ant to hear from her own lips how she fe lt when she was forced to leave the countrv w ithout food, and gathered the popcorn along the way which the women sca tte red fo r her. And I w an t to h ear her tell how she declared th a t God had given her every foot of ground which her fe e t should press, and then s ta r te d across tow ard the border the fa r th e s t possible d irection , w alked all day and slep t in holes dug in th e ground a t n ight, w ith so much glory upon her th a t i t is said th e re w as a radiance about h e r brow. I w an t to hear L ivingston say. Any com­mand so i t says Go Forw ard. Tim e fails me now, bu t up th.ere we shall not be hurried . We shall listen w ith ra p t a t ­ten tion to those we have never heard here and many will be the su rp rises bu t m any will be th e joys. S ir, if we have but a single scar th a t we can show up th ere we shall consider i t a privilege to display it. W hatever i t costs. B rethren , le t us p ress this b a ttle fo r God and fo r th e glory th a t shall be ours up there . L e t us dare som ething fo r God.

B ut we m ust press on, and how beautifu lly the rem aining stones portray our g row th in grace. The beryl w ith its deep rich blue, a firm reliance upon th e tru th of God which brings a peace unshaken by the triv ial th ings of e a r th ; th e topaz w ith its yellow and green, joys realized and joys expected— a large m easure of heaven here and m ore expected . And then the chrysoprassus w ith its gold and blue—a peace th a t passeth all understanding mingled w ith a w ealth o f God’s g race; and then the jac in th w ith its lig h te r purple o f “ VIC­TO R Y ” and the am etnyst w ith its d a rx e r purple of “ COM­PL E T E T R IU M P H .” I t is here th a t I have though t th a t th e m ultitude will b u rs t o u t w ith the g re a t shout which John heard when every c rea tu re which is in heaven and on e a rth and under the e a rth and such a» are in th e sea he heard say ­ing, B lessing and honor and glory and power be unto him th a t s i tte th upon the throne and unto the Lamb fo rever and ever; and when the redeem ed broke ou t anew in the song, “ U nto him th a t ha th loved us and washed us in his own blood, and h a th made us k ings and p riests unto God and his F a th e r; to him be glory and dominion fo rever and ever. Nazarene Missionary Sanitarium and Institute

The N azarene Sanitarium has now in tra in in g five young women. Of th is num ber, one is called to India, one to A fri­ca, and one to China; th e o th er tw o a re p reparing fo r dea­coness work.

The young women receive no rem uneration , th e ir room, board, uniform s and books being supplied by th e H ospital. This costs the in stitu tion about $250 00 per year fo r each

nurse, and we are believing G^d to touch h ea rts and have some churches, young peoples societies or individuals tak e th e whole or partia l support o f one of these nurses in tra in ­ing. I f God ta lks to you along th is line, listen to Him.

Anti-Tuberculosis AssociationN am pa should be particu la rly in te re sted ' in the Seal Sale

th is year as it has a local com m ittee of whicn Mrs. Tom Poole is chairm an which has been caring for four tuberculosis pa tien ts the p a s t year w ith the proceeds of the X m as seals re tu rn ed from las t years sale. Those p a tien ts a re still being cared for?. Four sleeping porches have been bu ilt fo r them , beds and w arm bedding supplied, and special food given w here necessary . All such money is expended locally.

The C hristm as seals also pay for th e H ealth Crusade work which is being carried on in all the schools in N am pa. This is the personal hygiene work which teaches cnildren health hab its “ by doing th em .” Miss Locke the school nurse is in charge and a v is it to th e room s will show the in te re s t th a t is being taken in this w ork by the children.

The Public H ealth N urses of the Idaho A nti-Tuberculosis A ssociation will give all the schools in th e ru ra l d is tric ts surrounding N am pa a school inspection, and n ex t y ear they will weigh and m easure the children and p u t on a good Pub­lic H ealth cam paign.

The sale o f Seals or H ealth Bonds is th e only w ay in which th e Tuberculosis Association raises money and is a t a s ta ted tim e the C hristm as season, and anyone selling tag s or an y ­th ing else does so w ithout authorization.

Chapel ServicesThe chapel services are continuing to

be seasons of blessing th is year. Mon­day is usually devoted to repo rts from the bands who have been ou t over Sun­day and to testim ony. W hen one se r­vice is no t long enough, Tuesday and W ednesday a re also devoted to te s ti­mony. T hursday is s tuden t day, and as has been th e custom some m em ber ofT lie p reach ers’ band brings an evan­gelistic m essage. We have some very good singing by the q u a rte tte s , o c te ttes and d ifferen t music pupils a t these se r­vices. The Lord has been p resen t and blessed every chapel service; some souls have knelt a t the a lta r, bu t we are ex ­pecting fa r g re a te r tides o f salvation to roll in upon us soon.

T here w as loud applause in the din­ing hall the day th a t Mrs. W allace told the boys th a t they m ight have her p ia­no fo r th e ir parlor if they would come and carry it over. N eedless to say th a t th e re w ere plenty of volunteers!

Dormitory Notes •The m em bers of the college staff and

th e studen ts, especially the boys are re ­joicing over the arriva l of Bro. and Sis­te r Ing ler who a re now in charge of the Boys’ D orm itory. Bro. Ing ler is Dean of Men. Bro. and S is te r Ing le r have rooms in the dorm itory and God is bless­ing them in th e ir work. Bro. Ing ler has charge o f the singing in the chapel ai d leads th e .ch o ir in the church also. '1 his is very g rea tly appreciated by the p.isior. I t is a p leasure to have Miss Olive Ing ler w ith us again also. She w as the p res id en t’s secre ta ry las t year, bu t is giving her tim e entirely to her stud ies this year.

The g irls have moved in to th e ir new parlo r and Mrs. W allace, the Dean of W omen has also moved into her new qu arte rs . Mrs. W allace is highly e s­teem ed and loved by the g irls, and a de­cidedly homelike atm osphere pervades th e dorm itory . L ast F riday n igh t the girls en te rta ined the boys and an enjoy­able evening w as spent.

The new heating p lan t is certa in ly a g rea t success. The en tire p lan t has now been connected up and th e rooms a re kep t com fortable a t a m inim um e x ­pense. The studen ts a re high in the ir praises of the p lan t and its efficient en­g ineer, Bro. D ent. Mr. Rousch is now the a ss is tan t engineer.

The Dining DepartmentThe p as t month has been a good one

in the D ining Hall. Several tim es the Lord has been graciously n ear a t our fam ily w orship tim es. One n igh t th e glory broke in upon us and a few prayed th rough to definite victory. One s tu ­d en t says th a t she is especially th an k ­ful fo r one p a rticu la r chair w here the Lord m e t her and sanctified her soul. Our fam ily of boarders “hre unitedly looking to God fo r y e t g re a te r m anifes­ta tions of His g l o r y . W e are expecting th a t o thers shall be saved and sanctified, th a t we shall have a real p a r t in th e g re a t world-wide revival.

Tem porally also the Lord has blessed us. A num ber of fru it sh ipm ents reached us th is la s t m onth. Since the la s t issue of the M essenger w ent to press we have received one or more b a r­rels of canne^^ fru its from each of th e following churches: Spokane, W ash.,Union Gap, W ash.,C olfax , W ash., Mos­cow, Idaho, O ntario, O re., and A shland, Ore. W e also received nice shipm ents from Bro. J . G. Law ler, of Echo, O re., and from S is te r J . C. M elger of Dixie, W ash. O ur church a t Connell, W ash., shipped us 25 dressed chickens. These arrived in splendid condition. We have placed them in cold s to rage and ex pec t to use them for Sunday dinners, and fo r C hristm as dinner. For all o f these g if ts we wish to exp ress our h e a r tfe l t thanks to God and to our loyal n o rth ­w estern friends. Mrs. McHose who has been w ith th e college since its beginning is in charge of the work in Voice and Miss V iolet Morse begins her th ird y ear in the piano de­p a rtm en t. Bro. D ent has charge of the Band. W e apprecia te th e w.ork which our Music D epartm en t is doing.

McHose and Miss M orse have .worked fa ith fu lly every y ear to m ake th e music d ep a rtm en t a success, and th is y ear is unusually prom ising.

The firs t p rogram of th e O rtonian L ite ra ry Society w as held Nov. 11, A r­m istice Day. E ach num ber on th e pro­g ram w as rendered well and le f t an im­pression th a t N. N. C. is fo rg ing ahead on lite ra ry lines th is year. The pro­g ram w as in te re s tin g although i t was n o t given fo r th e purpose of en te r ta in ­m en t; the aim of the society being se t fo r th very clearly as a desire to devel­op freedom and ease in public speaking by giving each m em ber o f th e society an opportunity to appear in public som e tim e during the year.

Through the kindness of Mrs. De W itte and the N azarene fam ilies in N am pa all s tuden ts rem aining in the dorm itor­ies a re invited out for C hristm as dinner.

The cam pus is g rea tly brigh tened up these dark w in te r even ings by a num ­b er o f e lec tric ligh ts which have been insta lled abou t th e do rm itories and Ad­m in istra tion building.

T hanksgiving Day was a good day a t the college. A lthough a num ber had gone home and some had- been invited ou t for the day, th e re w ere a goodly num ber le f t to enjoy the sp iritua l fe a s t a t the church in th e m orning and the good tu rkey d inner a t the Club a f te r ­w ards. In the evening several o f the boys and girls b rought th e ir stringed in s tru m en ts down and a f te r considera­ble ‘tuning up ’ we all joined in * ‘s in g .’

We considered it a rea l priv ilege and t r e a t to have R ev. E. E . Shelham er, Mrs. Shelham er and a num ber of th e ir friends from D eer F la t w ith us in chap­el one day in N ovem ber. Bro. Shel­ham er gave an inspiring m essage froml. Chronicles 4:9-10, po inting ou t how Jab ez received the blessing of God up­on his soul, rose above his env ironm ent and becam e m ore honorable th an all his b ro thers.

Mr. Geo. A rneson recen tly spen t Sun­day w ith Ml', and Mrs. E. E. M artin a t O ntario, Ore. He re tu rned Monday a.m. w ith the M artins who cam e up to a tten d -a board m eeting . The s tu d en t body and facu lty w ere glad to have them visit us and take p a rt in the chap­el service. Mrs. M artin gave a glow­ing testim ony of praise to the Lord for resto red health and com plete victory in her soul. Mr. M artin led worship in th e evening and gave a good rep o rt of th e work a t O ntario . May the Lord bless th e s a consecrated w orkers and give them success.

The beautifu l southern Idaho clim ate is a happy surprise to our s tuden ts from M innesota, D akota, N ebraska and o ther cen tra l s ta te s . They come here and pick apples, off the trees and the ground in D ecem ber and sleep on the porches all w inter.

Miss Florence Robingon who has been teach ing school this y ea r recen tly spen t th e Week end in N am pa. She w as en­te r ta in ed a t th e home of Mr. and Mrs. O. D. Chism w here a num ber o f her old friends and schoolm ates gathered and had a p leasan t tim e playing, sing­ing and ch a ttin g to g e th e r.

N ovem ber 22nd was Miss W inchesters birthday and a large num ber of s tu ­den ts sallied fo rth to ce leb rate the oc­casion in their.characteristic way. They gathered around a bay window and pro-' ceeded to serenade her. A fte r singing a num ber of good old songs, the sere- naders w ent to the fro n t door and p re­sented Miss W inchester with a bouquet; they then accepted her kind inv ita tion to go inside ana spen t a p leasan t half- hour in Singing m ore songs and ea ting w alnuts.
