BUSINESS ACHIEVEMENT:

Large Firms

AECOM increased gross environmental revenue in FY18 to an all-time high of $4.4B globally, maintaining ENR #1 Environment Firm status for the last 4 years. Our cutting-edge scientists and engineers progressed multiple technical innovations including the introduction/significant advancement of: Ash Mart, an industry-changing data analytics tool within the CCR closure market; successful field-scale testing of our PFAS destruction technology DE-FLUORO™; and wide-scale implementation of our algae treatment technology which includes reuse/biproduct components in biofoam and jet fuel. An unusual international P3 partnership with the Gordie Howe International Bridge project resulted in ISO14001:2015 certification in just 11 months, a world-first construction achievement. Our innovative project managers are building teams that span time zones, yielding tremendous project efficiencies by flowing deliverables around the clock. AECOM’s unique global Technical Practice Network is comprised of service area groups worldwide that share best practices readily on internal networks. We have catalogued over 200 internal digital innovations/executables, many of which are customized to assist specific client and industry challenges. Areas of growth include: providing multi-discipline services for disaster recovery; offshore services for wind, telecommunications and oil/gas; expanded global delivery of EHS management services; integrated eco-restoration services; and expanded remedial design/engineering/construction

NEW PRACTICE AREA:

Contaminated Sediment and Ecological

Restoration

Urban waterfronts are often plagued by historic contamination, locking up what could be valuable real estate, stifling the local economy, restricting re-development, and limiting public access. Public and private sector clients desire approaches that revitalize waterfronts, enrich transportation corridors, provide ecologically-enriched gathering places, and incorporate coastal resiliency initiatives. As a full-service urban planning, engineering, and environmental firm, AECOM has introduced a new practice to provide an integrated remediation/restoration offering. Our Contaminated Sediment/Ecological Restoration initiative will serve to drive on-the-ground actions that incorporate restoration market incentives, stakeholder outreach, and creative governance models. We believe that this new practice, which bridges a traditional gap between hard engineering and natural resources practitioners, will fill a much-needed gap in the market: remediation and restoration can recover value in impaired property, generate community goodwill, and ultimately drive re-investment and growth. We are actively working with owners and contractors to implement restoration plans in most major North American cities. With collaboration between scientists, engineers, restoration ecologists, and urban planners, our approach establishes a roadmap for restoration of contaminated waterfront sites and their associated ecosystems, thereby increasing real estate values, driving economic growth, implementing creative coastal resiliency solutions, and providing increased public open space.

INDUSTRY LEADERSHIP:

Ash Mart Data Analytics Tool within the Coal

Combustion Residual (CCR) Management and

Remediation Industry

The self-implementing-2015 CCR rule sets requirements for safe CCR disposal for 100+ organizations operating 300+ regulated sites including 700+ CCR units with two-billion cubic yards of CCR material. Each owner/operator houses its CCR-unit regulatory status/required reports/certifications on its individual website, making analysis of extensive/disparate pages difficult. AECOM, working with 25%+ of U.S. CCR units, recognized the need to collect/analyze data to anticipate market needs and technology solutions. We teamed with Firmographs to create an Ash Mart CCR-industry data-analytics tool. Users navigate through data quickly and effortlessly using dozens of visualization formats and sophisticated statistical analyses that allow comparisons, assessment of current market conditions, prediction of behaviors, review/application of best practices and benchmarking of responses. Use of the tool expedites analysis from hours/days to minutes/seconds. Innovations in filtering, processing and summarizing data in real-time readily informs clients’ discussions around engineering design, groundwater conditions, construction schedule and closure strategies. Data can even feed into live stakeholder presentations. Because data is geo-located, generating maps is easy. The tool is useful for when owners/operators are seeking mechanisms/outlets for beneficial use of removed CCR materials under closure-by-removal scenarios. AECOM remains the only entity advancing/making this vital industry data available, helping entities assess closure risk/approach environmental liabilities within informed and structured capital responses and helps to anticipate market needs/responses.

PROJECT MERIT:

Climate Change Adaptation & Resilience –

Texas Coastal Resiliency Master Plan

In March 2019, responding to devastation from Hurricane Harvey and extreme national socio-economic implications of an unprotected Texas, AECOM worked with Texas’ General Land Office to release the second-ever Texas Coastal Resiliency Master Plan, a long-term, statewide planning tool that directs the agency’s coastal management priorities in developing/implementing projects to restore/enhance/protect 367+ miles of Texas coastline and 3,300 miles of bays/estuaries, while protecting multi-billion dollar energy assets and 6.7 million residents. The plan’s strength yielded a proposed $100 million of Federal and $40 million of state funding toward vital, coast-wide resiliency projects, representing the largest-ever annual allocation of coastal resilience funds at the state level. The cutting-edge work communicates the impact of inaction, fosters future land/asset stewardship and is already informing resiliency projects/guidelines nationally. AECOM’s unique coastal engineering expertise across city/county/state/Federal agencies, environmental/technical/engineering groups, researchers/universities, and community outreach programs bore important facilitation/planning. AECOM identified and delivered: world-class, innovative coastal restoration methodologies expertly crafted to address interactions/co-benefits between infrastructure and nature-based engineering solutions; critical consensus building across diverse state/Federal agencies, businesses/industries and communities to allow groups to see common goals; and positive collaboration with the Technical Advisory Committee, a 200+ group of coastal experts, stakeholders and public and private entities.
