Extended Project

VANS ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN

Page 2: Advertising Research & Analysis

For my extended project I set out to create an advertising campaign for the shoe company Vans. Bringing together one or a couple of print based adverts that will be seen across the media sector. To create these print based advertisements I need to do some research on advertising itself and the diff erent elements of it. As well as analyzing previous print based adverts not necessarily by Vans but a company that has the same concept and a theme of skateboarding.I will then plan my photoshoot and then go forward with the shoot. I intended to use no models to keep the campaign on a low budget. After my shoot and any other needed shoots have been done I will take the photos onto photoshop and edit and enhance the image as well as, inserting computer graphics e.g. logo and borders. After these things have been done and then the fi nished adverts have been printed, I will look into potential costs of putting my advert into the ideal magazines so it can appeal to the right target audience.

WHAT I AM GOING TO DO

Advertising is the promotion of a company's products and services carried out primarily to drive up sales of the products and services. It is also done to build a brand identity and communicate changes in old products or introduce new product/services to the customers. Advertising has become an essential element of the corporate world and hence companies allocate a considerable amount of resources towards their advertising budget. There are several reasons for advertising, some of which are as follows:

Increasing the sales of the product/service. Creating and maintaining a brand identity or brand image. Communicating a change in the existing product line. Introduction of a new product or service. Increasing the buzz-value of the brand or the company.

WHAT IS ADVERTISING?

Page 4: Advertising Research & Analysis

Print media has always been a popular advertising option. Advertising products via newspapers or magazines is a common practice.

Often, newspapers and magazines sell the advertising space according to the area occupied by the advertisement, the position of the advertisement in the publication (front page/middle page, above/below the fold), as well as the readership of the publications. For instance, an advertisement in a relatively new and less popular newspaper will cost far less than an advertisement in an established newspaper that has a high readership. The price of print ads may also depend on quality of the paper and the supplement in which they appear. For example, an advertisement in the glossy (and popular) supplement of a newspaper costs more than one in a supplement which uses mediocre quality paper.

PRINT ADVERTISING

Outdoor advertising is also a very popular form of advertising. It makes use of several tools and techniques to attract the customers outdoors.

The most common examples of outdoor advertising are billboards, kiosks, and also events and trade-shows organized by the company. Billboard advertising is very popular. However it has to be really brief and catchy in order to grab the attention of the passers by. Kiosks not only provide an easy outlet for the company's products but also make for an eff ective advertising tool to promote the company's products. Organizing special events or sponsoring them makes for an excellent advertising opportunity and strategy. The company can organize trade fairs, or even exhibitions for advertising their products. If not this, the company can organize several events that are closely associated with their fi eld. For instance a company that manufactures sports utilities can sponsor a sports tournament to advertise its products.

OUTDOOR ADVERTISING

Nike Skateboarding, also known as Nike SB, is the Nike brand for i ts l ine of shoes, c lothing, and equipment for skateboarding. Nike’s adverts are al l based on the brand, Nike SB adverts are usual ly always based on skateboarding and sometimes a certain boarder. This can attract certain audiences who l ike to skateboard and who l ike the skateboarder. The adverts are both eff ect ive with skateboarding related objects and general scenery. Both adverts are very diff erent and diverse. For example the top advert is br ight and colourful just l ike the shoes where as the bottom advert the shoes are dark and there for the picture or advert is dark as wel l . But they included br ight colours on the blank white wal l catching the audiences eye.

Adidas skateboarding is a lot more diff erent and more about the brand unlike Nike who were advertising their shoes and what they’re about more than their shoes that they’re advertising. They both have the Adidas logo in big bold white writ ing on top of a bold blue background. Although they’re more about the brand they are advertising the skateboarding brand well, Including skateboarders and skateboards. They have also fol lowed the colour scheme and have colour coordinated the shoes with the back drop and the skate boarders.
