What is a Brand?1. A type of product manufactured by a particular company under a particular name

2. Unique design, sign, symbol, words, or a combination of these employed in creating an image that identifies a product and differentiates it from its competitors

UNCC’s current exterior branding

elements:•Queen City Crown•Norm the Niner•Color: Green•“Shake That Axe”

History of the Brand• Why are we called the 49ers?

• Funny enough it does have some relationship to the fact that Charlotte did have a great gold economy in the early 1900s but that is solely by way of irony.

• In 1949 UNCC, at the time “Charlotte College”, was a piece of UNC Chapel Hill’s off-campus centers. This makes sense as UNC is the oldest public university in the US.

• Had it not been for Bonnie Cone and some helpful scholars UNCC would likely not be a campus today as it was scheduled to be shut down like many other off-campus entities of UNC.

History of the Brand• The college was made primarily for commuters and was a 2 year

community college before actually becoming a 4 year institute offering 21 Doctoral, 64 Masters and 90 Bachelor programs.

• For the first 8 years of existence the college would conduct class at Central High School but enrollment increased to nearly 500 personnel in 1957.

• In 1958 the University would reside on its freshly acquired 250 acre plot of land on the border of Cabarrus county from 1958 to 1961, until moving to where it currently resides. It would not be until 1963 that our great campus would become a 4 year university.

• It was ultimately called Charlotte College until it became part of the Consolidated University of North Carolina. The campus would eventually offer masters degrees in the 1960s and inevitably Doctoral degrees in the 1990s.

Norm the Niner vs. SF 49er’s Sourdough Sam vs. a Real Niner

Page 11: Advertising Project #1 final

Let’s Improve Norm!• Have Norm present at more on and off campus events

• Off campus events include: nearby high school games, more panthers, hornets, and checkers games• Have him on campus regularly • Create a Norm the Niner instagram account called “where’s norm?” where Norm goes around taking pictures and selfies on and off campus as a way to promote him and his community involvement

Media Representatio

n• The more community

involvement that we have, the more represented we will be in the media.

• News• Social Media• What is UNCC up to?

Campus Activities and Incentives Niner Bash

Light Rail Pass for Students •During the school year it would be FREE•In the off season (summer and breaks) it is discounted- gives students who live on campus the opportunity to explore other parts of Charlotte rather than being stuck on campus.

Campus Activities and IncentivesOn Campus Concerts

•Held in the SAC each semester with popular artists•Not related to homecoming•Discounted tickets•Students get to go in first

Community Involvement

• Form more relationships with local businesses• 49er Bar Crawl in the downtown area• Free raffles at all on campus/off campus events

• Prizes would include: UNCC sports tickets, Charlotte athletics tickets, apparel, etc.

• Get UNCC more involved in the community• Food banks, homeless shelters, fundraising events on

campus• This would create free publicity for the school

• At the beginning of every semester/year, have a “Niner Bash”

• Event could be held in the uptown area. Ex: Bank of America Stadium, Time Warner Cable Arena, etc.

Page 18: Advertising Project #1 final

• Based on our survey results, we saw that students don’t think about UNCC athletics as much as they should.

• A better way of bringing more excitement and awareness for UNCC athletics is too….• Have pep rallies• Have a live band on gameday for tailgating• Have food trucks around tailgate

Building Student Spirit

Page 19: Advertising Project #1 final

Pep Rallies!!!!• How it will work…..• Big pep rally for first game, homecoming

game, and last game• Have food trucks and a stage put up at

the student tailgate area• Athletes would walk up the path from

the Union and stop at the podium• Coaches and captains will say a few

words to get the students excited• Once they leave, there will be a live

band playing

Page 20: Advertising Project #1 final

UNCC Invades Uptown• Another great way to build more excitement for football

games, basketball games, and baseball games is to have a

game at professional stadiums.

• Example: Baseball team has already had a game at BB&T Ballpark and was successful.

• This would bring the Charlotte area more together and more

aware of UNC Charlotte
