WHAT DO THE MUNICIPAL SYMBOLS OF

THE TOWNS AND VILLAGES MEAN?

Symbols preceded literacy and municipalsymbols date from biblical times. They cameinto common usage in Europe during the MiddleAges known as heraldry. In America, wediscarded the rules of heraldry on July 4, 1776along with the monarchy.

Municipalities often use their official seals or logos as a form ofidentification. Municipalities frequently sponsor a contest so“we the people” participate in choosing our identity.Poestenkill became a town in 1848. The most widely acceptedversion of the name is that the Dutch “Poest” means rushing, dirty, foamy and “kill” means creek. The town derived its namefrom the Poestenkill Creek, which flows through it.The Town of Poestenkill logo can be found in the Town Hall, ontheir trucks, and on the entrances to Town. The logo was designed by Barbara Woldt and chosen by theTown in 1982 as a result of a contest. It illustrates the creek aswell as the broad shouldered hills surrounding the town andthe churches which have been a part of the town since theearly 1800’s.~ By Marvin BubieMarvin can be reached at Mnobooks.com

There are one million acres of lawn across the country. Manyhomeowners aspire to having a lush, green lawn as theshowcase of their properties. The front lawn can make astatement and indicate to passersby the property owners’personalities and design preferences.Lawn care takes some dedication and hard work, but there arecertain ways to cut down on the amount of effort required tomaintain a landscape. By employing a few different shortcuts, you can have a healthy, lush lawn without spending all of yourfree time cutting the grass or pruning the trees.* Stop weeds at the start. Weeding is one of the most time-consuming parts of maintaining a lawn. Weeds can proliferatethroughout the lawn if not addressed in a timely manner. Onceweeds take root they can become a nuisance, so it’s best totreat weeds before they even have a chance to sprout. Applya pre-emergent weed control product as soon as possible inthe spring and then reapply it about three months later toensure weeds are eradicated. That equates to much less tediouslawn maintenance during the season.* Plant a urine-resistant grass. Having a dog and maintaining alush lawn has always been a particular conundrum forhomeowners. Dog urine is high in nitrogen. While nitrogen,

when applied in the correctratio, can be a lawn-growthstimulant, in the largeconcentration that occurs inpet urine, it causes the grassto dry up and burn, resulting inbare spots. Replanting withurine-resistant grasses canhelp cut down on the level ofdamage to the lawn from yourown pet or pets that happento make potty stops on yourproperty. The grasses mostresistant to urine tend to beperennial ryegrasses andfescues.* Wake up and water.Watering in the early morningssaves time and energy in thelong run by fostering a tougher, more drought-resistant lawn.If you water early in the day, less water wil l be lost toevaporation. Limit watering toa few times per week, and lessif you have had adequate rain.Avoid watering at night, whichcan expose the lawn tobacteria and attract insects.* Mow when the lawn is dry. It’s not advisable to mow thelawn when it is wet. Slipperyconditions can not only make itmore dangerous to push a

mower, but also slow down the time it can take to tackle thechore. The mower blades can become clogged and coated withwet grass clippings, necessitating stopping and starting thetask. Another thing to consider is lawn diseases spread morereadily through wet clippings. Stick to mowing when the lawn iscompletely dry.* Let clippings fly. Mulching mowers, or those that just distributeclippings on the lawn as you go, can be healthier for the grass. They will serve as fertilizer and redistribute nutrients to thelawn as they breakdown into the soil. According to “The OrganicLawn Care Manual,” leaving clippings on the lawn will fulfill about25 percent of fertilizer requirements. Plus, you save time baggingup clippings.* Mow less often. Raise the mower’s blade so that the grass islonger in between cuttings. The taller grass will shade the soiland block weeds from germinating. It also helps improve soil’smoisture retention.* Don’t cut corners. Adjusting a landscape design to have archesand curves can reduce the time it takes to mow and edge aproperty. Hard corners in a landscape will require more time tokeep straight and pristine.Caring for a lawn can take less time and effort than you think.

HOW TO GIVE A ROOM A NEW LOOK

WITHOUT BREAKING THE BANK

Slipcovers: Slipcovers are no longer the amorphous sacksthey once were. Slipcovers now come in all different pricepoints. Spending a little more can mean getting a style that iselasticized or form-fitting, which will conform to the contoursof a sofa or love seat.Paint or Stain: Painting a room’s walls a different color canprovide immediate results. But furniture also can be paintedand stained. Many times older furniture is made from qualitywood, not the type of composite or pressboard wood of someless expensive furniture options. That means that finishescan be stripped and replaced with new stains.

Welcome to Healthy Endeavors Medicine, a personalizedFunctional Medicine practice. During the many years Ipracticed primary care, I recognized both the strength andthe weakness of conventional medicine. My own healingjourney led me to Functional Medicine, a dynamic approachto assessing, preventing, and treating complex chronicdisease. I opened Healthy Endeavors to share and serve.Functional Medicine enhances conventional medicine byrecognizing the biochemical individuality of each patient, acknowledging that chronic illness is usually preceded by alengthy period of decline in one or more functions of thebody, and understanding the web-like connections both withinthe body’s systems, and between the body and external forcessuch as toxins, stress, and microbes. It is patient-centeredrather than disease-centered, viewing health as a positivevitality rather than the absence of disease. FunctionalMedicine is firmly grounded in sound science, while honoringhuman beings as mind-body-spirit creations.Problems that may be helped by a functional medicineapproach include: irritable bowel syndrome, food sensitivities, celiac disease and non-celiac gluten sensitivity, diabetes andpre-diabetic conditions, fibromyalgia, chemical sensitivity, fatigue, hormonal imbalances, and autoimmunity. At Healthy Endeavors Medicine, the power of careful listening, good science and team effort move patients toward healing.I want to hear your story and support your quest for robust, vibrant health.

Why do you feel your business has been successful? There are some guiding principles that are extremelyimportant to us. It’s imperative to listen to our clientsconcerns for their pets; treat every pet as an individualconsidering the pet ’s l i festyle when makingrecommendations; provide preventive care to keep petshealthy in an effort to avoid serious illness; and, staff training. Our team is excited about learning and understands theimportance of training in providing quality care. Our missionstatement, “Committed to complete and thorough medicine, consistent client education, and endless compassion toassure the best quality of life for your pet” guides eachteam member when making decisions. What is your biggest challenge? The recent economicclimate is a struggle for any small business. We must balancethe rising cost of supplies and medications with financiallimitations of some clients. When necessary, we help petparents prioritize for their pets understanding thatsometimes medical care may need to be spread out overtime. For some individuals, approaching their pet’s medicalcare in this manner helps them provide what they know isimportant within their individual, sometimes limited, budgets. A current project in development will help withsome costs of pet care even better than petinsurance…launching later this year. What are your future goals/plans for expansion? Wecontinually want to grow and improve as a team and whatwe do for our patients. We are excited about some newservices coming soon to the practice which will increasewhat we can do for our patients with diagnostics and withearly disease detection and prevention providing for quickerintervention than ever before…stay tuned and follow us onFacebook!

How long have you been in business? I have been inbusiness for close to 30 years. My shop in Wynantskill, NYhas been open 3 ½ years. What inspired the name of your business? Cabbageand Kings is a Victorian term meaning anything andeverything! That suits my shop to a “T” since I sell plants, perennials, dried flower wreaths and arrangements, originalart and paintings, home and seasonal décor, antiques andcountry furniture, vintage clothing & linens and anything elsethat strike my fancy. What makes your shop unique? I am unique because ofthe large array of different merchandise. It’s an olio ofeverything I love. I seek the unusual from antique to modernand blend them together for a great look. I grow my ownflowers to dry and enjoy the process of restoring antiques tobecome useful again. Someone who doesn’t care for antiquescan still find plenty to interest them in my shop. What is your biggest challenge? Making time foreverything that needs doing. My business often spills overto family time and everyone available becomes involved. Blesstheir help and patience! INDIVIDUAL LANDOWNERS ARE KEY TO

CONSERVATION

The Rensselaer Plateau is an extraordinary environmental andeconomic resource of about 105,000 acres that includes the fifthlargest forest in New York State and endless opportunities forrecreation, tourism, commerce and traditional living. The Rensselaer Plateau Alliance (RPA), established in 2006, is a diversegroup of organizations and people seeking to conserve and protectthe forested character of the Rensselaer Plateau and the manyeconomic and environmental benefits it provides. A grassrootsorganization, the RPA is people living in the area who share acommon interest in ensuring that future generations will experienceand value the many benefits of the plateau. The RPA recognizes that individual landowners, many of whomhave worked the land or used sustainable forestry practices forgenerations, are the reason the forest is here, and are key to thelong-term conservation of the Plateau. These landowners lovetheir land and share many common goals with the RPA, includingconserving the forest as forest and planning for the future.A cornerstone of RPA’s approach is to identify and inform landownersabout a range of tools and strategies to maintain and protect theirforests such as educational programs, woods walks, conservationeasements, donations or bargain sales. Several hundred landownershave already participated in workshops or training programs onstewardship options.Find a list of resources for landowners on our web site at http://rensselaerplateau.org/RensselaerPlateau/ResourceLandowners.aspx.Other tools for landowners are outlined in our Draft ConservationPlan which can be found at http://rensselaerplateau.org/RensselaerPlateau/ConservationPlan.aspx and you can also keepinformed of the many activities going on with RPA or the more than30 Alliance organizations by checking out our new data-base drivencalendar of events at http://renpa.azurewebsites.net/.

and Gilead at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Jim Hulihan serving bothchurches. In the Lutheran catechism, the sixth petition, ‘’the Lord’s prayer’’,and “lead us not into temptation’’ means God tempts no one tosin, but we ask in this prayer that God would watch over us andkeep us so that the devil, the world, and our sinful self may notdeceive us and draw us into false belief, despair, and othergreat and shameful sins.We pray that even though we are so tempted, we may still winthe final victory. We are now focusing on ‘’build one anotherup’’ (1thessalonians 5:11) otherwise, let us focus on positiveenergy, on the other hand, look for signs of God’s grace in ourcommunity life and seek to ‘’build one another up”.Also, starting up in the fall, families with children at or near age14 are asked to join our two year program of instruction whichbegins in September.
