THROW A
SENSATIONAL SUPER BOWL PARTY
The culmination of the American football season is on thehorizon. Millions of people will tune in to watch two teamsbattle for the title of champion. While the teams may be busyprepping their last-minute offensive and defensive strategies, sports fans across the country are doing their own strategizingby planning the perfect game-day party. As the opening kickoff draws closer, here are some keys toSuper Bowl party success.* Know your playing field. Your home is only so big, and thatmeans you will have to limit the number of people you caninvite. Crowding too many people into the house can beuncomfortable and dangerous, never mind trying to talk andhear above the cacophony of too many people. Take inventoryof how many you can seat comfortably. You may need to moveout larger furniture and move in folding chairs if you plan toaccommodate more guests. If you live in a warmer climate, you may be able to hook up the television outside and host anoutdoor event in the yard. This will enable even more peopleto attend.* Size up your competition. Super Bowl Sunday is a once-a-year event. There will be thousands of like-minded individualsplanning their own parties and utilizing the same services inyour local area. Those who need to rent tables and chairs andrely on a caterer (or the services of the nearest pizza joint)should plan early. If you would like to have a football gathering, start laying the groundwork a few months in advance. Thisway you can leave deposits for any vendors and be secure inknowing you will have what you need come game day.*Establish your play book. Will this be a chips-and-dips type ofparty or will you be offering more substantial fare? Is it adults-only or are guests able to bring their kids along? Make a list ofquestions that need to be answered and set up the partyparameters. This way you will know what to stock up on inadvance. Consider allocating a separate room in the house forkids’ play or for adults who are there for the social aspect ofthe party and will not necessarily be glued to the television.* Check your equipment. What is the Super Bowl without ameans to watch the game? Retailers often offer the best dealson new televisions this time of year because they know sportsfans want to upgrade their televisions for the big game. If
yours is a TV that has seen better days or doesn’t offer thehigh-definition picture guests have come to expect, this maybe the time to cash in holiday gift cards for a new flat-screen.If buying new isn’t a possibility at this time, there are centersthat will rent electronics.* Watch the clock. Hardcore fans will not want to miss any ofthe action. Therefore, refreshments and other components ofthe party will have to coordinate to the timing of the game. Dothe bulk of food preparation before kickoff and allow guests tomingle and fuel up before the game starts. Save finger foodsand other snacks that are easily accessible for when the gamestarts. Guests can take a break at halftime and grab food andbeverages that are set up buffet-style in another room. Hostsand hostesses also may want to consider serving as food“butlers” and constantly come out with new finger foods ontrays and go around the room to ensure everyone doesn’t missa moment of the game.* Don’t run interference. There’s not much entertainment thatneeds to be scheduled on game day apart from the game itself.Ensure that the television is situated so nobody’s view isobstructed and that people moving in and out of the room neednot cross in front of the TV to get food or use the restroom. While it may be customary to decorate your home with a fewdecorations, ensure any decorations do not obstruct views ofthe game. To make things comfortable for the largest numberof people, consider having two TVs tuned into the game runningin separate rooms. This way, guests can mingle and not be tiedto one area.
BARBECUED CHICKEN WINGS —
SUREFIRE SUPER BOWL WINNERS!
(MS) — The grilling experts at Broil King have some tips to makeyour life easier when it comes to preparing delicious grilled chickenwings. When getting started, try to select wings that are about thesame size, and no matter how you grill them, make sure wings arearranged in a single layer. This ensures that they cook evenly. The basic setup is easy, cook them on the grill using a hot indirecttechnique — preheat your barbecue to 400o, and turn the burnerson one side off. Arrange the wings over the ‘off’ side of the barbecue.Wait 5 minutes, and switch sides —burners, wings, everything —the key is to keep the wings over the unlit portion of the barbecue,

minimizing flare up and thechances the wings will burn.Switching sides on the barbecuewill also burn off accumulateddrippings without burning thewings. Another easy way toprepare chicken wings on thebarbecue is using a grill wok orbasket. You can use the samehot indirect technique to protectthe wings from scorching orkeep a close eye on them if youare grilling over direct heat. Youcan even go with the ultimate inlow-impact grilling and loadyour wings into a rotisseriebasket — the turning rotisseriewill keep your wings juicy andtender while minimizing flare-up.Seasoning your wings is amatter of choice — marinatethem ahead of time to impartflavor and moisture, use BBQsauce, or make your own to addnear the end of the cookingprocess. Sauces that are high insugar burn easily, so be careful, and only keep them on for afew minutes to finish with thesauce. Typical cooking time is30-45 minutes; always use aninstant read thermometer toverify that your wings arecooked through.

Signing up for schoolEach school district has its own requirements to beginkindergarten, so parents should familiarize themselves with theirschool district as soon as possible. One of the primaryrequirements is age. Children generally have to meet a certainage requirement (usually age 5), meaning their birthdays haveto take place prior to or by a cut-off date.Public schools will also require proof of residence. They oftenrequire utility bills with the student’s address on them. Privateschools typically have more lenient residence requirements. Most entering students also will need to have received all thenecessary vaccinations. If the student has not received allimmunizations, he or she will need to do so before enrolling.Getting preparedSome children are anxious to be “big kids” and begin school.Others may be nervous about what’s in store. The best way toprepare children is to think about enrolling them in some sort ofsocial program. Preschool is the avenue many parents choose, but simply spending time together with other kids in a structuredsocial setting is enough for many kids to get acclimated.
Talking about what to expect at school can also ease jitters.Parents can establish a school-like structure at home to illustratetheir points. Have set times for meals and snacks, require smallchores be done on time and set additional rules and limits. Bedtime and wake times should be the same each day as well.Children who are unaccustomed to having structure may findthe rigors of the classroom scary.Parents should inquire about touring the school to help calmkids’ nerves. This way children will see exactly what environmentthey will be working in each day.

VALENTINE’S DAY FACTS AND
SUPERSTITIONS
Every February 14th people around the world exchange gifts, chocolates and romantic greetings for a day set aside for lovers. Many traditions are followed, all in the name of St. Valentine.Still, people may not understand why such customs are upheld.Much of the history of Valentine’s Dayand St. Valentine himselfis shrouded in mystery, and much of what’s widely accepted isinaccurate. To set the record straight, here are some factsabout the holiday.* Valentine’s Day is believed to have originated from a celebrationin Rome during the fifth century. This celebration paid tribute toSt.Valentine, a Catholic priest. Other historians surmise it was away to “Christianize” the pagan holiday of Lupercalia, whichwas a fertility festival. Included in the traditions were boys andgirls drawing names from a box and exchanging gifts.* The Catholic Church acknowledges at least three differentsaints namedValentine or Valentinus.* All of the stories surrounding St. Valentine — whether theyare disputed or not — paint him as a sympathetic and heroicindividual.* Valentine’s Day greetings have been popular from the MiddleAges onward, though they have been usually verbal in nature.* The oldest known written valentine still in existence todaywas a poem written in 1415 by Charles, Duke of Orleans, to hiswife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London followinghis capture at the Battle of Agincourt.* Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the United States, Canada,Mexico, the United Kingdom, France, and Australia.* Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day are the most popular holidaysto give flowers.* According to Hallmark, women purchase 85 percent of allvalentines.* According to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated onebillionValentine’s Day cards are sent each year, making Valentine’sDay the second largest card-sending holiday of the year behindChristmas.* Candy was among the earliest Valentine’s Day gifts and remainsa popular gift today.* Some tales suggest that the type of bird a girl watches onValentine’sDay predicts her future husband. A bluebirdindicates a happy man, while a sparrow indicates a poor man.* In Medieval times, girls consumed unusual foods on Valentine’sDay in the belief it would make them dream of their futurehusbands.

EXPLORE ALTERNATIVE FLOWERS FOR VALENTINE’S DAY
Red roses may signify love, but just about any other crimson-hued flower can also represent the strongemotions felt for a sweetheart — and at a much more affordable cost. When visiting the florist to havea bouquet or arrangement of flowers assembled for Valentine’s Day, consider mixing and matchingsome other flowers for an arrangement with flair and originality.* Dahlias: Named after Anders Dahl, a Swedish botanist, these flowers are native to Mexico butactually prefer cooler growing conditions. Dahlias come in all sizes, from small blooms of a few inchesto much larger blossoms that may be a foot in width. They are related to the sunflower, daisy andchrysanthemum. The Dahlia usually is not a scented flower, which may work for people who areespecially sensitive to scented blooms.* Chrysanthemums: Also known as mums, chrysanthemums are versatile flowers that symbolizeoptimism, joy, fidelity and love. Although mums are traditionally yellow, they can also be white, red andother hybrid hues.* Peonies: Peonies are herbaceous perennial plants that produce large, often fragrant flowers rangingin color from red to white. Peonies are highly prized by Eastern cultures, and in China they are knownas the “flower of riches and honor.”* Carnations: Carnations have the scientific name of Dianthus, which means “flowers of God.” Carnationsare particularly coveted because they can last long after being cut, which makes them popular in floralarrangements. Dark red carnations are said to convey affection and deep love. Because of theirpopularity, carnations are often easily affordable.
