have the limited-time exhibit FROGS! Nature’s Messenger, opening January2014. And opening May 2014, Hippo Havenwill immerse you in the world of hippos like never before. Our brand-new 20 minute 4D movie,

Great White Shark, explores the Great White’s place in ourimaginations and uncovers the true story of their role atop the

oceanic food chain. We have what you need to integrate these

exciting new experiences in your curriculum. This year we are

The New Jersey Academy for Aquatic Sciences (NJAAS), Adventure Aquarium’s educationpartner, offers a variety of educational programs to enhance your group’s trip. Our hands-onprograms are designed to support your classroom’s science curriculum, and enhance CommonCore Curriculum Standards and Next Generation Science Standards. Whether you’re studyinghabitats or careers, these programs will enrich your students’ experience at AdventureAquarium and create stewards of the environment. Pre and post activities, as well as ExhibitCompanions, are available online at adventureaquarium.com/educator-inlet to further supplementyour educational journey at the Aquarium.

Classroom Lessons, Theatre, and Tour Programs are 30 minutes in length and areoffered Monday-Friday from September 16, 2013 – June 13, 2014 between 10:00 a.m.and 1:45 p.m. (No classes will be scheduled from December 23 – January 3 and on allmajor holidays.)

I AM A SEASTAR!This class uses imitation to encourage movement,vocalization, and creative thought. Students will beintroduced to various marine animals, such as sea turtles,horseshoe crabs and sea stars, and invited to engage theirimaginations by imitating their movements and sounds.This class does involve live animals, some of which studentswill be invited to touch.

TERRIFIC TURTLES What is the difference between a turtle and a tortoise? Howfast is a sea turtle? Can a snapping turtle take off its shell?Students will meet a few of our turtles in residence, andhave the opportunity to touch some related biofacts. Thisclass uses live animals, with no direct animal contact.

irazu fallsA stop at this South American waterfall will inspire yourstudents to explore all that a rainforest habitat has to offer.Water cascades down to a pool filled with numerousAmazon River fish, including pacu, catfish, stingrays and the amazing arapaima, one of the largest freshwater fish in the world.

ocean today kioskAdventure Aquarium and the New Jersey Academy forAquatic Sciences are members of the national CoastalAmerica Partnership, dedicated to restoring and preservingcoastal ecosystems. Get the latest on the conservationefforts of Coastal America partners by stopping at theOcean Today Kiosk, located across from Irazu Falls.

touch-a-sharkIntroduce your students to the wonderful world of sharks inthis hands-on interactive exhibit. Several small species ofsharks can be touched and observed. Have your studentsuse their math skills at shark scale, where they can comparetheir weight with the weights of various sharks.

shipwrecked!Your students will discover hundreds of fish andinvertebrates in a series of underwater habitats. This is agreat location for exploring adaptations and observingbehaviors. You will find seahorses hiding in a grassbed,angelfish swimming on a reef, moray eels lurking in ashipwreck and spiny lobsters peeking from rocky crevices.

ocean realmThis deep ocean habitat will have your students marvelingat over 1,500 animals, including several species of sharksand rays, two species of sea turtles, and an array of fishspecies. Adventure Aquarium is the only place in the UnitedStates to see great hammerhead sharks on display. OceanRealm is the exhibit to introduce your students to a numberof concepts, including classification, habitats, adaptations,behavior, and conservation. Check your Adventure Guide &Map for times of daily special shows in Ocean RealmTheater. See page 8 for information about a behind-the-scenes tour of this amazing exhibit.

stingray Beach clubHere is the perfect opportunity for your studentsto get up close and personal with four amazingspecies of stingrays. Younger students will enjoycomparing the texture, size, shape and color ofthese graceful animals, while older students canexplore locomotion, behavior, anatomy and whatthey can do to protect them. Feedings daily –check your Adventure Guide & Map for times.

Penguin islandA visit to Penguin Island willshake up your students’perception of bothclassification and geographicalrange. The endangered Africanblack-footed penguin is anaquatic bird that lives in atemperate climate. Check outthe underwater viewing window where yourstudents can observe the unique adaptations that make these penguins ideally suited for livingin water.

kidZoneOur KidZone exhibit is full of interactive activitiesand fun characters younger children will enjoy.For older students, this exhibit offers an amazingarray of fish species, including clownfish, lionfish,cuttlefish, pipefish and flashlight fish. This isanother great location for students to exploreadaptations, classification and behavior. Addengineering and technology education here witha look at biomimicry, or how fish adaptations areused to solve human problems.

gills grottoGill’s Grotto, located inside KidZone, includesthree touch exhibits where your students willexamine a variety of invertebrates found inwarm-water coral reefs. Species include Atlantichorseshoe crab, American lobster, scarlet cleanershrimp and the violet sea apple.

creature featureLocated adjacent to Irazu Falls, on the secondfloor, Creature Feature is our intertidal marineecosystem, showcasing animals from the rockyshores of the Pacific Northwest. Your studentswill have the opportunity to investigate a varietyof cold-water species including sea stars, snails,anemones and sea cucumbers. Have yourstudents compare the species found in CreatureFeature with those found in Gills Grotto.

Jules verne galleryHidden deep within the ocean are some of the strangestanimals imaginable. You will find a collection of thesecaptivating creatures in Jules Verne Gallery. Your studentswill be able to closely observe moon jellies and sea dragons.They will also have a chance to investigate a giant Pacificoctopus, which many scientists claim to be the smartestanimal without bones. Challenge your students to imaginewhat other strange creatures may be lurking in the deepocean, yet to be discovered.

shark realm / shark tunnelShark Realm features the largest collection of sharks on theEast Coast. Over 20 sandbar, nurse and sand tiger sharks –some more than 10 feet long – cruise along in the exhibit. Asyour students enter our suspended 40-foot Shark Tunnel,they will be immersed in the beauty of these majesticpredators. This is the perfect opportunity to examine theiranatomy, explore the many myths about sharks, appreciatetheir place in the food chain as an apex predator and realizethe impact humans are having on their survival.

west african river experience (opening May 2014: hippo haven)Learn how hippos spend their day in the wild, then get upclose and eye-to-eye with Genny and Button, our 3,000pound Nile hippos. Live presentations will feature the insidescoop on hippo care and enrichment. The underwaterviewing window is the perfect place to examine the uniquefeatures of this semi-aquatic species and explore theirrelationship with the many brightly colored fish, calledcichlids, that share their habitat.
