SUCCESS IN LEARNING AND LIFE
BASIC NEEDS AND FINANCIAL STABILITY
HEALTH ACCESS AND INDEPENDENCE
Enriching academic and social development for all youth so they are ready for work and life;
Helping families in need and creating paths to family fi nancial stability; and,
Supporting seniors and vulnerable populations to live safe, healthy and independent.
Dear Friends,
If you asked a roomful of people to defi ne the key elements of a good life, we think that there would be signifi cant agreement on a few building blocks: an education to open doors for the future, a career that offers a family sustaining wage and access to health care and services that help us remain living safely and independently for as long as possible. If you were asked who is dedicated to advancing education, income and health in our community, we hope your answer would be United Way of Westmoreland County.
This past year, United Way of Westmoreland County continued our critical work to leverage resources to support programs that improve educational opportunities, fi nancial stability for working families and access to health care and services for older adults and people with disabilities. We funded 39 nonprofi t organizations (serving Westmoreland, Fayette and parts of Armstrong County) who delivered programs in at least one of these areas—programs that delivered measured results in our community. One of these, Westmoreland Community Action, is highlighted in this year’s annual report.
But our work doesn’t stop with funding partner agencies. United Way also brings multiple partners together to address community challenges. There are two stories of such collaboration included in the pages that follow—Counseling for Career
Of course, we could not do this important work of improving lives in our community without your investment. Whether you give, advocate or volunteer (or all three!) with United Way of Westmoreland County, please accept our sincere thanks for your ongoing support.

Success and Mothers Making More. We identify the skills and expertise needed for collaborative endeavors and then bring our local experts to the table to develop, implement and evaluate strategies.
SUCCESS IN LEARNING AND LIFE
Success in learning and life enables young members of our communities to reach their highest potential. From the Books for Babies program for newborns through Counseling for Career Success aimed at better preparing our teens to graduate from high school, our commitment to providing all children and teens in our area with a promising start through educational successes ensures our area continues to grow and thrive.

FOCUS ON: COUNSELING FOR CAREER SUCCESS
Our school district partnerships are improving career planning curriculum in grades 6-12 to ensure all students are ready for a variety of career opportunities. Thirteen school districts in Westmoreland and Fayette are working to increase high-school enrollment in career and
technology centers, graduation rates, and post-high school educational enrollment, particularly in 2-year certifi cate and degree programs. Our efforts to improve career
planning are being used as a model for districts across the Commonwealth by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
BASIC NEEDS AND FINANCIAL STABILITY
With over 30% of Westmoreland County households earning less than $25,000 annually, meeting basic needs and achieving fi nancial stability can be an uphill road. That’s why we invest in providing support to ensure our community’s safety network is there to soften the blow when families are faced with emergent needs. Food, shelter, utility assistance, disaster response and programs that offer a path to family fi nancial stability are critical resources strengthened by the Impact Fund.

FOCUS ON: MOTHERS MAKING MORE (M3)
Mother’s Making More (M3) is a collaborative effort designed to reduce the number of single mothers living in poverty. A correlation exists between income and education; and for many single
mothers, barriers between their continued educational advancement, particularly in family sustaining wage careers, appear insurmountable. To reduce these barriers and improve the fi nancial
security of single-female headed families, we are working with Westmoreland-Fayette Workforce Investment Board, Westmoreland Community Action, Excela Health, Westmoreland County
Community College, Seton Hill University, Blackburn Center Against Domestic & Sexual Violence, YWCA of Westmoreland County, and the Greensburg and Valley Points YMCAs. Over 25 participants
were engaged in this program in 2012, continuing their education and growing a better future for their families. We continue to expand our partnerships with employers in our area, ensuring a better
future for our entire community.
HEALTH ACCESS AND INDEPENDENCE
As fourth in the country for the number of residents over 60, Pennsylvania is no stranger to the needs of older adults. With a growing number of seniors living in our area, it is long-term and sustainable solutions like Faith in Action that promote their abilities to remain safe in their homes and active in their communities. Thanks to the vision, leadership and generosity of the Women’s Leadership Council (WLC), this year marks our fi fth year of coordinating a network of volunteers aimed at improving the lives of seniors throughout Westmoreland County. While WLC is committed to Faith in Action’s continued expansion, local community donations, events and volunteers are a life-line to the program’s success in local communities.
Our partnership with FamilyWize Discount Prescription Program has saved residents in our tri-county service area more than $2,168,677 on everyday prescription costs since 2008. An additional $6,496,745 savings have been realized by decreasing needs for other medical services specifi cally related to heart disease and diabetes such as doctor’s offi ce visits, hospitalizations and surgeries. This partnership is one of many examples of our collective work in the community to assure our neighbors’ most pressing needs continued to be addressed through ongoing collaboration.

FOCUS ON: WESTMORELAND COMMUNITY ACTION
Our community partnerships extend beyond supporting organizations fi nancially; we collaborate on projects meant to improve the health and well-being of community.
Westmoreland Community Action (WCA), a leader in creating poverty reduction programming, brings expertise that is essential to projects such as Mothers Making More
(M3), Head Start, and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA). VITA completed over 500 Federal Tax Returns totaling $755,003 in federal refunds for the working poor throughout
Westmoreland County in 2012. WCA’s dedication to ending poverty generates the sustainable change our community needs.
PARTNER AGENCIES & HIGHER EDUCATION
Without the passion and dedication of our partner agencies, the work we do in our community would not have the same robust and resounding effects. It is their efforts that help drive our mission to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities.
They are joined by our partners in higher education that contribute their expertise, generosity and volunteer hours. Their support increases our effectiveness at calculating measurements of success, as well as assisting us with our community needs assesments. We value their committment to community improvement.
2012 DAY OF CARING
Our partnerships extend beyond those with other agencies in our community, and encompass a broad spectrum of corporate, nonprofi t, higher education and small businesses. One of the best examples of these elements coming together is seen during our annual Day of Caring. In 2012, we matched over 700 community volunteers with 70 projects in our area.
Volunteers spent the day cleaning up parks, painting libraries, reading to children enrolled in Head Start
and helping older adults in their homes.
Westinghouse Employees at Camp Tenacharison
The facilitation of these activities along with the picnic served to volunteers after a hard day’s work
could not have been possible without the generosity of our Day of Caring Sponsors:
Kennametal Foundation, FirstEnergy, Columbia Gas, Westinghouse and
Peoples Natural Gas.

2012 CAMPAIGN HIGHLIGHTS
The fi nancial collapse in 2008 did more than affect individuals and business owners, it caused an extremely large decline in charitable giving. Analysts predict that we won’t return to the giving levels seen in 2007 until at least 2020. This dark forecast has affected nonprofts across the country, as well as those located in our service area. We’ve seen staff cuts, budget restrictions, declining state funding and an increased demand for services. Throughout these diffi cult times, we’ve persevered, and our work could not continue without the dedication and
generosity of supporters like you. We’d like to share our campaign results with you, as well as say THANK YOU. Over 6,000 donors have entrusted us to continue fulfi lling our mission, and we will work hard to ensure that their dollars are making the most positive impact possible within our community.
