Using the Omni or Lumina you get the easiest to install, easiest

to program, and easiest to operate lighting control system

on the market today!

The HLC family of products from HAI uses existing wires so it can

be used in new or retrofit installations.

HLC (HAI Lighting Control)

HLC – a structured, easy to use method of setting up HAI Dimmers, Scene Switches and House Status with an HAI controller.

The HAI controller configures: The HLC devices. The HAI Scene Switch to work with the HLC switches in the room. The HAI House Status to work with the HLC switches in the

house.

Provides scheduling, remote control, sunrise/sunset, occupancy settings, whole house scenes (macros), etc.

Provides TWO WAY communication from HLC switches to HAI controllers and reports switch status which can be viewed from HAI Console, Omni Touch, or software.

600W UPB™ Dimmer Switch

Controls and dims lighting loads up to 600 Watts.

Requires a neutral (white) wire.

Derate dimmer to 500 Watts when in a 3 gang box.

Ships with white fronts.

Color change kits available for Ivory, Almond, Light Almond, Brown, Black, Grey.

600W UPB™ Non-Dimming Switch

Controls non-dimming loads, such as fluorescent lights, up to 600 Watts.


Derate dimmer to 500 Watts when in a 3 gang box.



1000W UPB™ Dimmer Switch

Controls and dims lighting loads up to 1000 Watts.

Requires a neutral (white) connection wire.

Requires deep box. Derate to 900 Watts if used in normal box. Derate to 800 Watts if you remove one side. Derate to 600 Watts if you remove 2 sides.

Order switch in the desired color.

15A Relay UPB™ Switch

Controls heavier loads (up to 15 Amps) or motors, such as ceiling fans, that may hum when used with Dimming or Non-Dimming switches.




Auxiliary UPB™ Switch

Used with any HLC Switch to make "three-way" (two switches control one light) and multi-way (more than two switches control one light) using conventional "three-way" wiring techniques.




Room Scene Switch

A Scene Switch allows you to control all of the lights in a room or area.

Lights may be turned on, off, dimmed, brightened, and set to four different scenes to provide limitless options for both security and aesthetic lighting in your home.

To set a scene: Push Scene button Adjust room dimmers as desired Push Scene button five times –

lights blink. Scene is memorized!

House Status Switch

Designed for master control of the whole house.

Turn any room in the house on or off with the press of one button.

Monitor which rooms have lights on and which rooms have lights off at a glance.

Great for Master Bed Room, Entry/Exit, Family Room.

Custom Engraving

It is recommended that you purchase a Custom Legend Kit part number 38A06-2 for every Scene, House Status, and Event Switch.

This allows you to customize the Button Name making it easier for your Clients to use.

Engrave the switch before they move in because it will make it easier to use the system.

Set up rooms with HLC

To Use HLC: Rooms are set up in

groups of 8 units. The first unit in a group

of 8 (1, 9, 17, 25, …) is reserved for a Room Controller or a Room name if no controller is used.

All you have to do is create the rooms and HLC does the rest.

Set up switches with HLC

Up to 7 loads (lights or appliances) per Room.

The Omni or Lumina automatically links Dining Room controller with loads 2-8 and Living Room controller with loads 10-16.

Set up House Status switches with HLC

The last unit in a room can be used for a house controller.

Up to 8 house controllers can be added anywhere “on the eights” in the first 64 units to show the status of the first 8 rooms.

Status of rooms 9-16 are the next 64 units and so on.

Set up Event switch with HLC

A House Status switch can be used a Event switch (8-Button keypad) by placing it in a unused switch location.

Use PC Access to program the Event switch.

Do Not put it in a Room Scene switch or House Status switch position as it will be configured wrong.

HLC Details

First unit in a group of 8 (1, 9, 17, 25, …) is reserved for Room Scene Switch.

Up to 7 loads (lights or appliances) per Room Scene Switch.

HAI Software

PC Access

PC Access allows the installer to setup, program, and monitor a home control system by a serial or network connection.

PC Access allows you to build and use a template to quickly and easily program your Omni or Lumina controllers.

PC Access Setup

Install PC Access Write down the Security Stamp. Default Password is “password”. Select Configure and select the Serial port on your computer.

Select File and click on New Name the file. Select controller type (make sure you select the correct one).

Fill out the information on the opening screen.

Select Setup and select Names / Voices.

HLC units are labeled on the right

Enter the Room Name and the switches in corresponding room.

Always change the network address and password.

Download PC Access File

Setup Names / Voices and configure the remaining items in PCAccess.

Click on File, click on “Save”.

Click on File, Click on “Download from PC”.

Once Download is complete you can now configure your devices.

Configuring Switches

Put switch in “set-up” mode one at a time.

Dimmers and Switches: Press the “ON” 5 times in a row. LED will blink to show set up mode.

Scene & House Status Switch: Press and Hold Top and Bottom buttons until they all flash.

No need to disassemble switch or remove cover plate.

To take the device out of “set-up” mode press the “ON” 2 times in a row

Click switch 5 times to go into setup. LED blinks.

Press and Hold top and bottom until LED blinks.

Console or Touchscreen

Select UPB™ Device to be configured

On Console: 6 Status, 1 Control, scroll to

switch name (or enter number), then #, #.

On Touchscreen: Control, Select Room Name, for

Room Controller or tap “Go To” button, then tap unit name, then tap “Config”.

Controller sends address, names and links to switch and takes it out of setup mode when done. The HAI system CONFIGURES IT!

Repeat for each device.

Configure all HAI UPB™ Devices

Each UPB™ device in the House will need to be configured per the previous example.

Auxiliary switches do not count as a device in the room count or overall count, they are not configured, they communicate directly to the Switch. They can be used to put the switch in program.

If you have two Scene Switches in the same room configure them in the same “position” (same unit ID) this way they will mimic each other.

UPB™ Upstart Configuration

Free software for advanced configuration of UPB™ devices. This software is provided as a courtesy to all UPB™ manufacturers.

Turn a Dimming Switch into a Non-Dimming Switch and a Non-Dimming Switch into a Dimming Switch.

Change the LED color on a switch or turn off the LED. Change the fade rates for on and off. Default the light level of the Dimming switch on a single

tap or a double tap. Setting the switch to only turn on to 95% doubles bulb life.

UPB™ Upstart Configuration

Required Items for Upstart

Upstart Software PIM (Power line Interface Module) (36A00-1) it is

recommended to have a separate one just for Upstart (HLC and Upstart use different communication modes).

PIM to PC Cable (36A05-2). USB to Serial adapter if your computer does not

have a serial port, HAI recommends the KeySpan model USA-19HS.

Program Changes

As you make changes and press the “OK” button. A box will come up and you can select “Yes” to program each device as you make the changes or select “No” to program them later.

Programming the changes later is preferred using “Program All Modified”.

“Program All Modified” only programs the changes that you made to each device. Depending on the number of changes this could take some time as it has to program each device one at a time.

UPB™ Links

A Link in UPB™ is a single command that can control a single device or a group of Multiple devices (Scenes).

When a button on a Scene Switch is pressed, that is issuing a Link command

An HAI controller configured with HLC builds all the required Links for you.

The HAI controller also monitors the status of all the devices so that you always know the state of the device.

UPB™ Link Status

This is important to understand, when a UPB™ Link is issued from any device including the HAI controller, no request for status is issued. In other words the device(s) will respond to the Link command but an HAI controller will not show the new status.

This is a limitation of the UPB™ protocol!

The HAI controller monitors the status of all the devices

so that you always know the state of the device by requesting status from each device.

Request Status

If you Add to an existing Link or make a New Link.

In PC Access you will have to add program lines to request status from each device that is part of that edited or new Link

If you use the Links as they are configured by HAI

controller Then you do not have to request status as that is already being done.

Let HLC and the HAI controller do the hard work.

UPB™ Status

Later I will show you how to Request Status using PC Access Use PC Access to program control of devices,

similar to a Link So that you don’t have to worry about working with

Links and maintaining the correct status

Status is important since your customer can check on their house using Snap-Link, Pronto Link or Touchscreens.

UPB™ Links (Scenes)

How To Request Status

This will be required anytime you add to a existing Link or make a new Link.

This adds to the traffic on the power line, only use when needed.

Review

Use HAI Lighting Control (HLC) whenever you have a controller in place. Always start with HLC, use Upstart to make minor adjustments. Remember if you add or edit a Link, you will have to think are you going

to have the correct Status. Upstart is a powerful tool use it cautiously.

Review

Keep it Simple!!! Do not make their lighting system so complicated that they need a manual to operate the lights.

Engrave all Scene, House Status and Event Switches, it is always easier to work with a name then remember that the Evening button is #3.

HAI has a Knowledge Base that will help you with some other UPB™ applications.

Article 496 deals with using a Scene Switch to control 4 individual loads.

Article 690 deals with using a House Status Switch to control individual loads with each button acting as a dimmer. (Note the Caution)
