“Introducing the widest selection of high performance spring-energized seals available today...” Advanced EMC Technologies specializes in the design and manufacture of spring-energized seals made from a wide range of high-performance polymers. Advanced EMC Technologies seals offer very low friction, wide temperature range, full chemical compatibility, and long service life. Advanced EMC Technologies seals routinely handle applications where conventional seals fail.

Spring Materials. Advanced EMC Technologies seals is are energized by one of three different spring style made from 300-series stainless steel. For unusually corrosive service we make the spring from Hastelloy.

Designs. There are three styles of seals, based on which of three different types of spring is used in the seal. This design has a “cantilever beam” spring, and is used for general purpose applications. The maximum pressure rating for rod and piston seal designs ranges from 3,000 to 30,000 psi. Cryogenic designs are rated to -320 °F .

Design Concept. PTFE and other polymer blends make excellent sealing materials, especially when their resilience is enhanced by incorporating a spring energizer into a U-shaped groove in the seal itself. The spring provides permanent elasticity and immunity from compression set. The shape of the seal makes it pressure-actuated, becoming tighter as media pressure rises. By combining our high performance Fluorolon© PTFE blends with corrosion resistant metal springs, Advanced EMC Technologies seals eliminate the disadvantages associated with conventional elastomeric seals - degradation, heat aging, embrittlement, chemical attack, swelling, compression set, and high friction. Seal materials. Advanced EMC Technologies seals are made from PTFE blends and other high performance polymers .

Hardware recommendations

Surface finish. Improving the finish on static and dynamic mating surfaces is a primary method for obtaining longer seal life, lower friction, and greater sealing integrity, in general we recommend finishes as shown below:

Mating Surface Hardness. Harder surfaces extend seal and hardware life by preventing abrasion to the metal and holding a smooth finish. In moderate speed and pressure conditions, the minimum recommended hardness is 44 RC. Higher speed/pressure or poor lubrication may require values from 65 to 72 RC, using special coatings Hardenable materials include: Shaft Coatings. In high-spees rotary or severe-service reciprocating, use chromium oxide or similar coatings with high hardness and smooth finish. Avoid chrome plating or use in light duty service only. Consult factory for further data on coatings and recommended substrates for your specific application.

Spring Design Features

Advanced is the only supplier that designs and manufactures using all three of commonly speci-fied spring types for pressure-actuated PTFE seals. We select the best spring for your applica-tion from this complete range of options. Spring load is often customized to suit exact friction or torque requirements.

Typical Spring Curves

Each spring has unique load and deflection prop-erties affect seal performance. Spring load affects friction, wear rate, and ability to seal fluids tightly. Deflection range affects seals ability to handle gland tolerances and take up seal wear.

“M” Cantilever Beam Spring

Moderate load and deflection range. This is an all purpose spring that is well suited for positive wip-ing action at the front edge of seal lip.Available in standard and heavy load.

“W” Slantcoil SpringWide deflection range with relatively constant load over the life of the seal. Available in light, medium and heavy loads. Excellent for applications requir-ing close control of friction/torque.

“H” Helical SpringLow deflection range with very high unit load. Used for static or slow-dynamic service where friction and wear are not a problem.
