Original Video ConceptTwo men are forced to deal with the recent death of their friend as theycontemplate the meaning of their own lives, death and morality. Secrets of both
their pasts are revealed and they are forced to reassess who they think they are,
while all the time they are being drawn into larger events beyond their
comprehension.
The script takes place mostly in a bar, but flashbacks and cutaways take place in
various Irish locations such as city apartments, streets and riverside. The script is
dialogue heavy but leaves room for some impressive cinematic shots.

Process
After our group was formed, a meeting was arranged to discuss the groups
story, script and group members roles. Lighting, Camera and Sound equipment
was then booked the following day (Thursday, 8th April). Actors were assembled
and a venue (Dolans Bar) was chosen to house the filming. The script for scene
1 was then drafted and sent to those involved, as well as a shot-list and
storyboard.
During Filming of Scene 1, we set-up the lighting equipment and tested different
positions on crew members in order to find the correct arrangement. As filming
was during the daytime, there was an amount of natural light in the room. From
this, we chose to use two Fill-lights as well as two Backlights which had a clear

frosting cover on both. A Shotgun microphone was set-up with the Video Camera
and the sound was then tested to ensure there was a correct signal.
While waiting on the actors to arrive, we filmed additional shots of the venue
which were to be included during editing. Once the actors arrived, the story was
briefed again as the actors rehearsed. White balancing took place, sound waschecked and lighting was reviewed again. The video camera was set up and
props were added (Guinness, Glasses, Tobacco, Chairs, etc).
We began by filming both characters acting out the scene. Following this, we
filmed just one actor acting, in order to capture reaction shots. This was then
repeated with the other actor. Equipment needed to be moved to film the third
actor. Lighting had to be reassembled and checked as well as reposition the
camera and sound.
Shooting went well and we completed the first act of the film, however we
received bad news the next day when we discovered that one of our actorswould not be able to continue filming the next two acts. In light of this, we
decided to reshoot the first act with our director/writer William Kennedy filling in
because of his familiarity with the role. We once again shot in Dolans and the
lighting setup was identical. Some small changes were made for the lighting of
the barman, played by Morgan, because he would have been virtually unlit in the
original setup.
The next day of shooting was due to take place in Dolans as well but
unfortunately the venue was double booked. To adapt to this, the third act was
adapted to take place in a house instead of a pub and we filmed in William'shouse.
Lighting Set-Up (Dolans):
1/2: Backlight with Clear Cover to Reduce Brightness. Location:
Dolans Bar, Limerick. 3: Camera.
4/5: Fill-light.
6/ 7: Actors.
8: Bar Counter/Table.
9:Shotgun Microphone.10: Daylight from Window.
