FROM THE DIRECTOR

March has finally arrived and has brought warmer

weather and longer days. We‟ve had a long seeminglyendless cold winter and we‟re ready to step outside into

the sunshine and beauty that spring brings. This is the

time to start thinking about planting flowers and enjoyingthe out of doors. We have an abundance of gardening

books for you to gain new ideas for your garden andplanting. In addition, we have our own Claybank Master

Gardeners that will warmly welcome you to their group. They meet each month and they maintain a bulletin boardinside the front entrance full of information. They are

responsible for keeping the Library‟s landscape lookingnice. Stop by the Library to check out what all we do

offer for spring.Spring break is the week of March 14 th and we have

planned activities for our children that we are sure they

will enjoy. On Tuesday, March 15 Louise Grider willreturn with her Owls of Alabama and she has set aside

time for the children to get up close to the birds and gentlypet them. On Wednesday, March 16th Landmark Park is

returning with their reptiles. Yes, they will bring their snakes for the children to pet! Then on Thursday, March17th Mark Seymour will entertain us with a program

entitled “Around the World with Drums and Music.” Thisgoes right along with Music in Our Schools Month.

Programs will be held in the West Wing of the Library at3:00 and are made possible by a grant from the Ft. Rucker Thrift Shop. Then on Saturday beginning at 9:00, we will

host the Pokémon State Championship Tournament for children, youth, and adults. The event is free to enter, fun

to play and you have the opportunity to win fantasticprizes. For more information, call the Library at774- 5480.

At the Friends of the Library Annual MembershipLuncheon, they installed new officers. The following will

serve during 2011: Elizabeth Babine, President; BrendaHarper, Vice President; Brenda Minton, Secretary; andElaine Potts, Treasurer. We look forward to another successful year.

We now have a small supply of income tax forms, but

we ask that you only take one booklet per family so wewill have enough for everyone. Once again, weencourage you to file online. Not only will it save you

time, but you will receive your refund much faster thanpaper filing.

Dale County Genealogical & Historical SocietyThe Society will meet March 7th at 6:00 in the Alice

Doughtie Wing of the Library. “Oliver Kingsley‟s Viewof Union Avenue” is the program.

FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY

According to the American Library Association, March6-12 is Teen Tech Week. The effort began in 2007 as partof a “Get Connected@your Library” initiative. The week focuses on getting youth and young adults to be „competentand ethical users of technologies, especially those offered

through libraries… Teens, in order to gain the skills neces-sary to compete in today's job market, need access to digital

and online information.‟ Your Library has all sorts of re-sources to help the young people that you know to reachthese goals. The Library offers a number of test preparation,

tutoring services, and homework help for students, some of which are listed at the Library‟s website, www.odcpl.com .

Computer terminals are available during the Library‟s hoursof operation and you only need a library card for access.

Come in to the Library or log on to the website to learnmore about the many student resources that are available.

The Friends of the Library are preparing for the first

Mini-Book, Plant and Bake Sale of this new year. Theevent is scheduled for Saturday, April 16th, and here is howyou can help. If you have seedlings that can be harvested, please consider donating some of them to the Friends for theplant sale portion of the event. We are also accepting plants

whose seedlings will be ready for harvest by the time of thesale. The Friends are also looking for old venetian blinds. These can be cut to size to label the plant seedlings.Carolyn Ball, a member of the Friends and of the Master Gardeners, will be coordinating this effort. There will also

be a bake sale, and, yes, we will need your best/favorite rec-ipe as a donation for that, too. Please call the Library if you

have plants, venetian blinds, or baked goods to donate. Thanks to you all, the Friends have had a great success witheach Book Sale event. We are looking forward to doing it

again this year, with all proceeds to benefit the Library. Besure to mark April 16th on your calendar, and we will look to

see you all starting at 8am.

Saturday night, March

12th, is the day to

set your clock for-ward one hour.
