NOTIFYING LEARNERS AND CO‐SPONSORING AGENCIES: For instructors who teach on Fridays, please notify your learners and if applicable, your co‐sponsoring agency program coordinator, classroom volunteers and TESOL practicum students about the March 7th class cancellation.

REGISTRATION: On arrival at the PD conference, register for the afternoon workshop of your choice by writing your name on the workshop lists posted in the 3rd floor hallway. There is a limit of 25 participants per workshop. Registration will begin at 8:15 a.m. on March 7th on a first come, first served basis.

PARKING: Parking is available in the public underground parking at Crossways Plaza on the north‐east corner of Bloor and Dundas. There is no parking available on the school grounds. Bishop Marrocco‐Thomas Merton High School, located at the same intersection as the Dundas West subway station, is easily accessible by TTC. Do not park in the outside lot south of Coffee Time. You will have a good chance of being towed!

COAT ROOM: A coat room is available for your use on the 3rd floor.

LUNCH ARRANGEMENTS: Please join us for a complimentary lunch in the cafeteria (on the lower floor).

PUBLISHERS’ DISPLAY: The publishers’ display will be open during the lunch break and in the cafeteria on the lower floor. We will have a book draw at the end of the day in the workshops. Don't miss it. You may be a winner!

EVALUATION: You will be provided with the Professional Development Conference Evaluation Form in your registration package. Please hand in your evaluation form to the room monitor at the end of the afternoon workshop. Your constructive feedback is highly appreciated.

CERTIFICATES OF ATTENDANCE: Certificates of Attendance will be provided to instructors attending the PD Conference. These documented hours can be used toward the 10 hours of professional development per year, as required for recertification by TESL Ontario. Please note that certificates not picked up at the PD day conference will not be re‐issued.

Plenary Presentation

Askin Taner

2010‐2012 Adult Learner SurveyAnalysis, Discussion and Recommendations

Askin Taner is a Senior Program Advisor at the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration (MCI), Language Training Unit. He has worked in the Immigration Branch of the ministry since 2007. Prior to joining MCI, Askin worked as a policy analyst specializing in adult education and skills training program areas. Askin served as Vice‐Chair on the Board of Directors of the Davenport Perth Neighbourhood and Community Health Centre from 2006 to 2012. Askin’s educational background is in political science. He carried out graduate studies at the Department of Political Science, University of Toronto. MCI has put together this presentation to provide school boards with a number of recommendations based on the findings of the Learner Survey in order to help them improve their program outcomes. MCI’s analysis of the results of the last 3 surveys, as well as discussions with school board administrators, have informed the discussion and recommendations put forward here.

Learner Satisfaction in the TCDSB Adult Education Program

Following Askin Taner’s presentation, all staff will break out into small groups for a focused discussion related to the points raised.

In your group, please share your perceptions and insights. Identify the strengths and challenges involved in meeting learner needs and improving learner satisfaction, and make recommendations for improvement. As a group, you will agree on which points to document for submission. At the end of the discussion, each group will submit one completed form that will capture the points raised during the discussion. A reduced sized sample of the form is below. (A note taker will enter your group’s identified points from the blackboard onto a template electronically, for sharing.)

Workshop Descriptions ‐ Afternoon Workshops (1:15‐2:30)

1 YMCA Language Assessment & Referral Centre: Overview and Trends Erin O’Neil & Vedran Tintor

Target audience: ESL/LINC instructors This session will provide a general overview of the operations of the YMCA Language Assessment and Referral Centre and its clients. Topics will include client demographics, trends and the assessment and referral process. Erin O’Neil (BA, TESL) has been working in ESL for over 10 years, first in instruction and now in assessment. She currently leads the downtown site of the YMCA Language Assessment and Referral Centre. Vedran Tintor (BA, CWC) works as the Outreach and Community Relations Coordinator of the Language Assessment and Referral Centre at the YMCA of Greater Toronto. For the past 5 years, through several different roles within academia and with employment and community agencies, he has been actively involved in facilitating the processes of successful career and life transitions of newcomers to Canada.

2 Tools and Strategies for Progress Tamara Stuhr

Target audience: ESL/LINC instructors This session will introduce the use of the following tools within the ESL/LINC classroom: Laptop, projector, document camera, Smart phone apps Digital calendars, activity logs, CLB skills tracking charts Wi‐Fi Internet, websites (CAA, Toronto In Time, etc.) Student led lesson planning Settlement counselors, TPL staff and resources, and right under your nose people and activities Book/movie clubs Tamara Stuhr is an Adult Education Instructor for ESL and LINC with TCDSB. She's from Calgary where she was a LINC instructor at Centre for Newcomers. She's tried to keep CALL at the forefront of her lesson planning because of her passion for IT and belief that it can accomplish massive outreach for English learners.

3 Assessment Using the Revised CLB Anne Hajer

Target audience: ESL/LINC instructors This session presents an approach to classroom‐based assessment using the revised CLB along with a hands‐on activity using the approach. Anne Hajer has been working as an ESL consultant for over 15 years and was a member of the team that revised the Canadian Language Benchmarks.

4 Wikis: Power Tools for ESL Educators Maureen Stewart & Elaine Sambugaro

Target audience: ESL/LINC instructors Join us for an interactive workshop on the wiki. This session will focus on the use of wikis in the classroom. We will demonstrate how basic and intermediate level learners have used wikis as a learning tool in the TCDSB. In addition, participants will be shown how to set up their own wikis and adapt them to the needs of their students. Handouts will be provided. Maureen Stewart is the Instructor‐in‐Charge at Eglinton LINC and ESL Centre in Toronto. Her professional career spans over 20 years in Canada and abroad. She has an MA in TESOL/Applied Linguistics. Elaine Sambugaro is a graduate of the TESOL program, Woodsworth College, University of Toronto. She is interested in CALL programs and systems and their impact on second language acquisition. She has an MA in Political Science.

5 Needs Assessment: Tools and Strategies Anne‐Marie Kaskens

Target audience: ESL/LINC instructors In this session, we will explore a range of needs assessment strategies and tools—from quick two‐minute needs assessment check‐ins, to questionnaires, to more communicative needs assessment activities. We will review several needs assessment tool samples and discuss the benefits and challenges involved in using them. Anne‐Marie Kaskens has worked for the Toronto Catholic District School Board for 20 years, in adult ESL and literacy instruction, instructor support and supervision, curriculum development and project management.

6 Customer Care Sharron Tan de Bibiana

Target audience: Administrative assistants This workshop will provide customer service tips, strategies and practice for facilitating client interactions and handling challenging situations with clients. Skills for good customer care and service excellence will be contextualized for admin assistants. Sharron Tan de Bibiana teaches workplace communication and occupation‐specific language. She has taught customer service skills in‐class and in the workplace. Sharron has been a contributing curriculum writer for a number of projects including LINC 5‐7 Curriculum Guidelines and LINC 5‐7 Classroom Activities. She also co‐authored The Program Planner: a Companion to the TCDSB Adult ESL Curriculum Guidelines, for English for Specific Purposes.

7 Another Look at the CNCR Cristina Stathopoulos & Naomi Paramantham

Target audience: Nursery instructors The purpose of this session is to review the Care for Newcomer Children Requirements. The presenters will reorient the staff on the new requirements and provide a comprehensive understanding of the CNCR document through handouts, quizzes, case scenarios, etc. *ALL PARTICIPANTS ARE ASKED TO BRING THEIR COPY OF THE CNCR. Cristina Stathopoulos is a Nursery Program Consultant with the TCDSB Adult Education Program. She has a Bachelor’s Degree and is a registered and certified Early Childhood Educator from Ontario. Cristina is also a TESL certified ESL Instructor. Naomi Paramanantham is a Nursery Program Consultant with the TCDSB Adult Education Program, a Registered Early Childhood Educator from Ontario and Certified in the Montessori Method of Education.

8 Implementing the Enhanced Training Plan in LBS Adriana Ungureanu

Target audience: Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) instructors In this workshop we will examine learner files in CaMS, analyze the suitability indicators, and practice entering updates in the Enhanced Training Plan. We will also discuss the best strategies we use to capture formal referrals in training plans. Adriana Ungureanu has been with the TCDSB since 2009 when she started to work as an instructor for the LBS program. She is currently the LBS resource teacher and administrator. In the past she was an ESL instructor with the Learning Enrichment Foundation and with the Hamilton Wentworth District School Board. She completed her TESOL certification at University of Toronto. She has a bachelor degree in English and Geography and a Master’s degree in Public Relations.
