Aloha Nimitz ‘Ohana,
November is Military Family Appreciation Month. With 99% of our student
population being military dependent, I would like to acknowledge our families
for their dedication and service for protecting our country’s freedom. On
Thursday, November 10, 2016 at 7:00 am, the Hickam Honor Guard will join our
Nimitz Safety Patrol at the flag pole for a brief Veteran’s Day Flag Ceremony as
we honor and salute all American Veterans for their service and sacrifice.
The faculty and staff appreciate your support at this year’s Fall Festival, which
was a huge success! A big mahalo to our coordinator, Mrs. Sheri Honnaka, who
put many hours into planning this event. We couldn’t have done it without our
PTO officers and the many parent/student volunteers who assisted us with the
food booths and games. Thanks to our families for their generous donation of
cookies, cakes, pies, etc. for the Cake Walk.
Last year, students in grades 3 through 8 and grade 10 took the Smarter Balanced
Assessments that are aligned with the Common Core State Standards. Based on
the SY 2015-2016 results, Nimitz Elementary School continues to make progress
despite our transient population. The results include data on student proficiency
in reading, math, and science (4th grade only); student growth in reading and
math; chronic absenteeism; and the achievement gap.
Our students from grades 3-6, received 69% in reading proficiency, 63% in math
proficiency, and 69% in science (4th grade only) proficiency. The state’s scores
were 53%, 48%, and 57% respectively. Congratulations to Nimitz for being one
of the schools with the lowest chronic absenteeism rate of 2% two years in a row!
The teachers and staff are dedicated to helping our students succeed. Nimitz
Elementary has high expectations, which are in line with the State Strategic Plan
and the Strive HI Performance System. We are committed to “continuous
improvement” and strive daily towards student learning and achievement.
Mahalo,
Marcy Kagami
Principal

Student Council Thanksgiving Canned Food Drive
Nimitz Elementary Student Council will be having a canned food drive from November 14-18, 2016 to feed Hawaii’s needy. Students can bring in canned meals, meats, soups, vegetables, and fruits. All food items will be picked up by the Hawaii Food Bank just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday. Mr. Matsumoto, Student Council Advisor, and the student council members will keep track of each class’s progress to see which class collects the most donations. All students are to take their canned goods to their homerooms. The goal for this year is 2500 cans of food. Last year, Nimitz Elementary School reached its goal of 2500 cans. Let’s see if we can continue to reach our goal again! Thank you for your ongoing support of Nimitz Elementary School.

Winter Program 2016
Tuesday, December 20, 2016
School cafeteria
8:30 am for preschool, 1st, 3rd and 5th grade families
12:30 pm for kindergarten, 2nd, 4th and 6th grade families
Both shows will include all grade levels performing.
Parking: Back field (gate at the end of Main Street)
Due to the overwhelming popularity of our Winter Program, we will have two complete shows. This will allow us to provide ample parking and will reduce the challenges of providing seats for everyone who would like to enjoy the program. Please attend the show that is assigned to your child’s grade so that we can try to evenly divide the attendance. The shows will be
the same. Therefore, attendance at both performances is not necessary for families with more than one child.
