Aloha Nimitz Ohana,
During spring 2015, students in grades 3-8 and 11 took new
assessments in English Language Arts/Literacy (ELA) and
Mathematics called the “Smarter Balanced Assessments,” which
replaced our previous Hawaii State Assessments. The test results
are the first for Hawaii’s students to measure the academic goals
laid out in the Hawaii Common Core and mark a new baseline that
will enable us to know where our students stand on their path to
success.
The Smarter Balanced Assessments put more emphasis on
writing, problem-solving, and critical thinking - all the skills that
students need in the real world - and provide a snapshot of your
child’s academic progress towards college and career readiness.
Your child’s teacher will be sharing the Smarter Balanced
Assessments results at the Parent-Teacher Conferences coming up
at the end of September. Students who took the Terra Nova for
Grades K-2 last year will also be receiving their results at this time.
We want to thank you for your cooperation and support in making
sure your child was rested, provided breakfast, and arrived to
school on time during the two weeks of testing.
Our AVID Parent Night is coming up soon. We look forward to
seeing your family on Tuesday, September 15, 2015 at 5:00 pm in
the cafeteria!

Federal Impact Aid Program
Do you live or work on federal property (i.e. low-income housing, military installation/housing, federal
building, national park)? If yes, read the letter and complete/submit the survey your child brought home on
Wednesday, September 2, 2015. You participation in the Impact Aid Survey helps secure valuable funds for
Hawaii’s public schools, including Admiral Chester W. Nimitz Elementary School.
Here’s how:
Each year, Hawaii is unable to collect local taxes from tax-free federal properties. This means less
money for public education.
The federal government, however, partially reimburses Hawaii for the cost of educating federally
connected students through so-called Impact Aid funds.
The amount of Impact Aid schools receive is based on how many parents complete and return the survey to
their children’s school.
Help us take advantage of the Federal Impact Aid Admiral Chester W. Nimitz Elementary School is receiving.
BEING GOOD NEIGHBORS
Please use the sidewalk on the base side of Main Street to travel
to and from the Aupaka Gate. Crossing the street with the cross-
ing guard is safer, and we need to respect our neighbors by not
using their lawn as a short cut.
Thank you!

Dear Parents and Families:
Reading for pleasure inside and outside of school has real and long-lasting benefits. It unlocks the
power of information and imagination and helps children discover who they are. Here’s what you can do
to help children develop stronger reading skills and a love for reading:
tastes and reading skills.
Our Scholastic Book Fair is a reading event that brings the books kids want to read right into our
school. It’s a wonderful selection of engaging and affordable books for every reading level. Please make
plans to visit our Book Fair and be involved in shaping your child’s reading habits.
Book Fair Preview dates: September 17 &18
Shopping Dates: September 21-25
We look forward to seeing you and your family at our Book Fair!
Remember, all purchases benefit our school.
Sincerely,
Nimitz Elementary Student Council
The students benefit in many ways if parents keep in close contact with the school and teachers. For
conferences or discussions about your child(ren), we ask that you arrange a conference period at a time when it
will not interfere with the regular school day. It is preferable that these conferences be prearranged and that they
take place before or after school when the teacher will be able to give the parent his/her undivided attention.
When parents and teachers make time to meet and discuss the progress children are making in school and the
challenges they may be encountering, plans can be made to make the school year a better one for the students.
Formal Parent/Teacher conferences are scheduled at the end of the first quarter. Conferences are scheduled
from September 23, 2015 to October 1, 2015. On these seven days, students are released early from school.
Students will be dismissed at 1:00 pm (early dismissal) on:
Thursday, September 24 Friday, September 25
Monday, September 28 Tuesday, September 29 Thursday, October 1
Students will be dismissed at 1:10 pm (regular dismissal) on:

Habits of Mind The Aiea-Moanalua-Radford Complex Area is continuing an initiative to create thoughtful school environ-
ments in which everyone can experience habits of success by providing students with knowledge of the
Habits of Mind by Art Costa and Bena Kallick.
“The Habits are a repertoire of behaviors that help students and teachers to successfully navigate the various
challenges and problems they encounter in the classroom and in everyday life.” – Costa & Kallick 2008
One of sixteen habits of mind has been introduced each quarter
since school year 2012-2013. The first Habit of Mind for this
school year is Thinking about your thinking. Students who are
skillful in their ability to think about their own thinking:
Are aware of the kind of thinking they are engaged in.
Can describe how they engaged in this type of thinking.
Evaluate whether the way engaged in the thinking ap-
proach was effective.
Plan how they will engage in the same type of thinking the
next time it is needed (Swartz, Costa, Beyer, Kallick, &
Reagan, 2007)
