FCIS Administrators’ Retreat 2013 July 28-30, 2013

“Faculty & Student Success: What You Need to Know” Sunday, July 28 1:30-4:30 “Personal Branding and Digital Communication” Joan McGettigan, Ed. D., Director of Educa-tional and Information Technology, North Broward Preparatory School We educate students about the dangers of the Internet yet we do not teach them how to com-municate properly in this global and digital world, how to understand privacy controls, how to market themselves, and how to curate their knowledge, skills, and talents in order to create a positive digital footprint. Come learn how you can implement this learning at developmentally appropriate points for younger students as well as see how our required high school course at North Broward Preparatory School serves to both educate students about establishing a posi-tive digital footprint and provides instruction in a multitude of digital tools in a real world ap-plication while complying with ISTE standards. Monday, July 29 9:00-12:00 “Don’t Get Burned: Hot Legal Issues” Lori Smith, Of Counsel, Zimmerman Kiser Sutcliffe,P. A., Orlando This session will cover three important topics: Social Media Issues for Independent Schools: Social media is creating a myriad of issues for independent schools. We will discuss the legal framework for dealing with social media use by students, teachers, and parents. Parents Behaving Poorly: We will discuss ways to deal with those sensitive parent issues that often arise. We’ll discuss how to use your enrollment agreement to deal with uncooperative parents and avoid a breach of contract action. Topics include legal issues related to parents in the midst of a divorce, subpoenas for testimony or school records, suspected abuse or neglect by parents, car line issues, cell phone use, over-zealous sports parents and micro-managers. And no, we’ll never tell them this was on the agenda! Employee Terminations and Discipline: When can you safely terminate a problem employee? This portion will cover the when, how, and why of employee terminations and show you how to use progressive discipline to protect your school. We will also discuss employment law concerns particular to independent schools and how you can use your employee handbook, job descriptions, and employment contracts to eliminate many problems before they arise. Monday, July 29 1:00-4:00 Optional Session “Preparing Your School for an FCIS Evaluation: Five Year, or Five Year Review” Karen Mathews, Associate Director for Accreditation, FCIS This session will guide schools as they prepare for an upcoming FCIS evaluation. Topics will in-clude: FCIS Standards (revised 2011), self-study templates, the evaluation visit and more. Bring your questions!

FCIS Administrators’ Retreat 2012

“Improving School Climate & Culture”

Tuesday, July 30 9:00-12:00 “Comprehensive Faculty Evaluation” Terry Moore, Senior Consultant, Independent School Management (ISM) At the heart of every independent school mission is making a difference in students’ lives. The faculty evaluation system is a key component in safe guarding your mission, and the quality of your academic program. However, many independent schools, if they’re honest, don’t use a comprehensive and defensible faculty evaluation system. It’s a risky proposition. Terry L. Moore, Senior ISM consultant, will demonstrate ISM’s researched approach to comprehensive faculty evaluation. Called Comprehensive Faculty Development Model, we will explore Charac-teristics of Professional Excellence which guide the basic components. We will discuss how to establish an environment of high predictability (i.e., they know what’s important here) and supportiveness (they know you are working for their success) - the two factors that are directly correlated with student performance, satisfaction and enthusiasm.

****Optional Session! No additional fee!**** Tuesday, July 30 1:00-3:30 “Merit Based Pay”, Terry Moore, Senior Consultant, ISM The mere thought brings fear to many! But with increasing pressure from faculty and board to increased pay and enhanced teaching quality, a merit pay system can really help. If you’ve ever wondered about merit pay, ISM will demonstrate several compensation systems, and to-gether we’ll look at the advantages and application of a merit based pay system. In a fast-paced and informative workshop, we’ll look at broad banding and simple merit base pay.
