Administrative Guideline Administrative guidelines are established in the cases of some Board policies to handle implementation of the Board of Trustees’ guiding words. These guidelines are for administrators’ use in interpreting and applying the Board of Trustees’ expectations about the operation of the Zionsville Community Schools insofar as such explanations are enumerated or clarified by the establishment of Board policy.

2220 – COURSES OF STUDY The Zionsville Community Schools Board of School Trustees has adopted a policy (2220) that regards ADOPTION OF COURSES OF STUDY. This policy can be found at http://www.neola.com/zionsville-in/ and is shown below.

The Superintendent of Schools is charged with maintaining a list of the courses of study. The following courses of study are adopted and authorized for offer during the 2013-2014 school year. 3/13

Elementary School Courses (grades pre-K-4)

Students in ZCS elementary schools are assigned to a classroom teacher for instruction in the following core subject areas tied to state standards:

Pre-school (beginning at age 3) Developmental Special Education (Boone Meadow only) Literacy (reading/writing/language usage) Mathematics Science Social Studies Health/Physical education

In addition students are assigned to specialist teachers for instruction in general music and visual arts.

Curriculum is based upon Indiana's adopted standards for each subject area and is often interdisciplinary (i.e. science or social studies topics and standards may be the content focus for literacym, math, or arts activities and literacy/math skills may be developed/applied through science, arts, social studies learning experiences). Support is provided for special needs students and students who have been identified as high ability with a focus on continuous progress for all students through instruction that is differentiated for their level of readiness and stretching their skills. Kindergarten and first grade teachers have transitioned to Indiana's Common Core standards

following the state's proposed timeline. Other grade levels are awaiting guidance from the legislature/Department of Education on the timeline for possible transition to new Common Core standards.

Middle School Courses (grades 5-8)

Students in both ZCS middle schools are assigned to a team of teachers for instruction in the following core subject areas tied to state standards:

Language arts Mathematics Science Social Studies Health/Physical education Visual Arts Performing Music Engineering/Technology Research/Keyboarding World Languages (Spanish, French, Chinese)

Note: In grades 5 and 6, language arts and social studies are done through a Humanities block which combines topics and skills in reading/writing/history to meet the combined state standards for social studies and language arts in an integrated course. Support is provided for special needs students and students who have been identified as high ability with a focus on continuous progress for all students through instruction that is differentiated for their level of readiness and stretching their skills.

Curriculum is based upon Indiana's adopted standards for each subject area and makes frequent use of integrated technology through our 1:1 BYOD (bring your own device) program.

Courses offered in the two Zionsville middle schools are shown on the following list.
