    Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine

    Administrative Structure

    Full Time and Teaching Faculty

    David C. Mason, DO,

    FACOFP, Associate

    Professor, has been

    Chair of the

    Department of OMM

    since August 2010. On

    July 1, 2014 he was

    also appointed Interim

    Chair of the

    Department of Family

    Medicine. Dr. Mason is

    board certified in

    NMM/OMM and

    Family Practice/OMT.

    He holds appointments

    in OMM and Family

    Medicine and an appointment to the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences as an Associate

    Professor. Dr. Mason is a member of the Academy of Medical Educators and was recently

    appointed to the Board of Trustees at the American Academy of Osteopathy. Dr. Mason sees

    patients in the OMM Patient Care Center two afternoons per week.

    Daniel Clearfield, DO, MS, CAQSM, is an Assistant

    Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and

    is certified in Family Practice/OMT, and Primary Care

    Sports Medicine. Dr. Clearfield practices sports medicine

    at the Ben Hogan Bone and Joint Institute. He serves as

    teaching faculty for the Department of OMM in Year I

    and Year II and is a member of the Academy of Medical

    Educators. TCOM has begun its primary care Sports

    Medicine Fellowship this year with their inaugural

    fellow training under Dr. Clearfield.

  • Thomas Crow, DO, FAAO,

    Professor, joined the Department in

    March 2013. Dr. Crow is board

    certified in Family Practice/OMT and

    NMM/OMM. He sees patients in the

    OMM Patient Care Center four days

    per week. He assumed the role of

    Residency Director for the NMM/OMM and Plus One Residency Programs and the

    new FM/OMM combined residencies effective July 1, 2013. Dr. Crow is integral

    in the development of clinical OMM

    research.

    Russell Gamber, DO, MPH, Adjunct Professor,

    is board certified in Family Practice/OMT and

    NMM/OMM. Dr. Gamber instructs in the first and

    second year courses and mentors pre-doctoral

    fellows and OMM residents in research, teaching

    and the clinical setting. Dr. Gamber retired from

    the HSC in August 2011, but returned in

    September 2011 to resume his academic role in

    the department. He is the Director of the Everett

    College and is a member of the Academy of

    Medical Educators. Dr. Gamber was awarded the

    designation of Professor Emeritus in December

    2013 by the UNTHSC Board of Regents.

    Sharon Gustowski, DO, MPH, Assistant

    Professor, is a TCOM and a UNTHSC-SPH

    graduate, board certified in NMM/OMM. She

    currently teaches in OMM Years I & II. She also

    teaches residents in the OPTI. Dr. Gustowski is a

    member of the Academy of Medical Educators

    and the Admissions Committee. She sees patients

    in the OMM PCC two and one-half days a week.

  • Kendi Hensel, DO, PhD, Associate Professor, has

    worked with the Research Division with grants related to

    OMM in pregnancy, carpal tunnel syndrome, pneumonia

    and low back pain. Dr. Hensel supervises a weekly

    continuity clinic for residents, and sees patients at the UNT

    Health OB office. She is board certified in Family

    Practice/OMT and NMM/OMM and was recently named

    Associate Editor of the Journal of the Americal

    Osteopathic Association. Dr. Hensel is a member of the

    Board of Trustees at the American Academy of

    Osteopathy. Dr. Hensel participates with Year I and II

    OMM courses.

    Rita Patterson, PhD, Professor and Director of the

    OMM Research Division, came to UNTHSC in 2007

    to direct the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation Physical

    Medicine Core Research Facility, which is devoted to

    improving knowledge of musculoskeletal function in

    order to assist physicians in the diagnosis and treatment

    of medical problems. Dr. Patterson teaches

    Biomechanics to TCOM Year I students and Physical

    Therapy students and is the research mentor for the

    students and residents in OMM.

    Ryan Seals, DO, Assistant Professor,

    joined the department in August of 2012.

    He was appointed Course Director for the

    Year II course in June of 2014, and is

    actively involved in instructing all levels

    of medical students and residents through

    lectures, hands-on labs, and other didactic

    activities. Dr. Seals sees patients in the

    OMM PCC and Student Health Clinic. He

    is board certified in Family Practice/OMT

    and NMM/OMM and is a member of the

    Academy of Medical Educators.

  • Sajid Surve, DO, Associate Professor, joined

    the department June 1, 2014 as Year I Course

    Director and Member of the Academy of

    Medical Educators. He will also teach in Year II.

    Dr. Surve is board certified in physical medicine

    and rehabilitation, NMM/OMM, and pain

    medicine. He also received Medical

    Acupuncture certification through the Helms

    Medical Institute via the UCLA David Geffen

    School of Medicine. Dr. Surve is working on

    interdisciplinary collaboration with UNT Denton

    School of Medicine to develop the Center for

    Performing Arts Medicine.

    Ralph C Walsh, Jr. (Clay), DO, Assistant

    Clinical Professor, joined the department in

    April 2011 as an outpatient clinical provider

    of OMM and Hospitalist at Plaza Medical

    Center and Harris Hospital, Fort Worth. Dr.

    Walsh is a 1992 TCOM graduate. He is

    board certified in Family Practice/OMT and

    NMM/OMM, a member of the American

    Academy of Osteopathy and is the Chairman

    for the Osteopathic Education Service. Dr.

    Walsh serves as Director of Richards College,

    and Course Director for the Year 3 Core

    Clerkship. He also participates in Year II

    OMM labs as a table trainer, core preceptor in

    Year III and teaches residents in the OPTI. He supervises an OMM curriculum and provides

    monthly lectures for Plaza MC Interns and Residents. Dr. Walsh is the student advisor for the

    SAAO as well as an assistant faculty advisor to AMOPS. Off campus, Dr. Walsh is a Colonel

    and a Chief Flight Surgeon in the Ohio Air National Guard and is active with the local Texas

    Air Guard unit. Dr. Walsh has received a promotion to Associate Professor effective 9/1/14.

  • Hourly Faculty and Adjunct Instructors

    Aaron Boone, DO, graduated from the

    NMM/OMM Residency Program in

    March of 2014, and joined the OMM

    team as an hourly Adjunct Instructor.

    Dr. Boone is board eligible in

    NMM/OMM and teaches in Years I and

    II.

    Alan Stockard, DO, FACOSM,

    Adjunct Associate Professor, is

    board certified in Family

    Practice/OMT and Primary Care

    Sports Medicine. Dr. Stockard

    retired from the Department of

    Orthopaedics at UNTHSC on

    June 30, 2014 and returned to

    teach in OMM on an hourly basis

    in Years I and II.

    Postdoctoral Research Associate

    Kunal Singhal, PT, PhD, Postdoctoral Research Associate,

    joined the department in May 2013. Dr. Singhal is responsible

    for initiating, soliciting and coordinating new research projects

    for the OMM Research Division. He also participates in

    mentoring students, clinical fellows and residents.

  • Christina Ragland, GTA, joined the department July 1, 2013.

    She has participated in community health fairs, team-based

    hospital care and OMM research. Christina was a former OMM

    Student Teaching Assistant. She presented her masters research

    work on "Inflammatory Mediators Related to Asthma and OMT"

    at JPS Research Day.

    Administrative Staff

    Diana Carda, Sr. Administrative Associate,

    supports administrative activities and acts as

    department timekeeper, IRT liaison, and inventory

    coordinator. Diana is responsible for purchasing

    activities, managing calendars, and coordinating

    department meetings and events. Her other duties

    include creating agendas, recording meeting

    minutes, acting as copier services liaison and back-

    up travel coordinator. She also monitors HRM

    tracking and submits work requests.

    Debbie Hall, Administrative Coordinator, joined the

    department in July 2011. She manages faculty support

    for the department, including credentialing, travel,

    tracking faculty activities, and monitoring faculty

    allowances. Debbie assists with gathering information for

    faculty reports, schedules meetings and appointments and

    acts as Admissions Coordinator for the department. Her

    other duties include managing purchasing activities,

    timekeeping, processing mail and work requests.

  • Donna Hollon, Assistant to the Chair, has been with the Health

    Science Center since July 2004. She joined the Department of OMM

    in March 2009. Donna acts as representative and liaison of the chair

    and manages budgets, financial operations, strategic planning,

    department development, personnel/HR activities and the ongoing

    administrative operations of the department. Donna also prepares

    reports, surveys and assessments, oversees the marketing and

    communications activities, and manages the OMM website.

    Academic Staff

    Toni Allen, Administrative Coordinator, prepares course

    work for Year I and acts as assistant to the course director.

    Toni coordinates the activities of the OMM student teaching

    assistants, and provides administrative support and

    coordination of schedules, meetings, and activities of OMM

    graduate teaching assistants. Toni’s other responsibilities

    include monitoring OMM lab activities, ordering lab supplies

    and submitting academic print shop orders.

    Cari McTaggart, Administrative Coordinator, Cari has been the Academic Coordinator for

    our year II OMM courses and year III OMM clinical clerkship since joining the department in

    March of 2012. In April 2014 her position was realigned to accommodate the department’s

    growth and a full-time Year II Coordinator was hired. Cari remains the Year III OMM Core

    Clerkship Coordinator, is the department representative for Rotation related Affiliation

    Agreements, she manages the OMM Rotation Schedule for more than 250 students including

    Core Clerkship, visiting students, interns and residents. In addition to her other duties, she is

    the department representative at the Curriculum Directors Committee; and is a member of our

    newly created research committee.

  • Casey Powers, Administrative Coordinator, joined the

    department in April 2014 as the Year II coordinator. Casey

    assists the course director in the design, development, and

    preparation of course and testing materials. She oversees

    OMM lab activities, including operating the AV equipment.

    Casey provides administrative support for students by

    maintaining the online course platform and ensuring grades are

    accurately recorded. Additionally, she submits CME quarterly,

    and coordinates with teaching faculty regarding the lectures,

    labs, and meetings.

    Research Staff

    Robert Longnecker, BS, MS, Biomedical Engineering

    Specialist, manages lab activities for the OMM Research Division.

    Robert manages the custom software programs used extensively in

    the lab, and provides software support, custom programming and

    date analysis for research projects. Robert also purchases technical

    hardware and software for research activities.

    Katelyn Rockenbach, MS, Program/Project Coordinator is the department IRB liaison and

    participates in the recording and analysis of research

    data and in the production of publications and

    presentations related to research projects. Katelyn’s

    other responsibilities include recruiting, enrolling,

    consenting and interviewing research subjects,

    maintaining research files and databases, literature

    searches, preparing study reports, budget reports, and

    data review and entry.

    precertifications, triages and rooms patients, takes care of

    medications and assists physicians with procedures.

    appointments, and managing patient records

    while in the department. She is also

    responsible for verifying insurance, collecting

    fees and balancing funds at the end of the day.
