Since the beginning of this year, we have trained 11 eucharistic ministers who take the Eucha-rist on First Fridays to the homebound and assist with brining the Eucharist to three assisted living fa-cilities. If you are homebound or recuperating after hospitalization and would like someone to bring you the Eucharist on First Friday, please call the parish office at 249-9256 and speak with me.

Along with Dcn. Tim Reilly and Fr. Michael, we provide pastoral care to those in the hospital and those entering into hospice care. We also make vis-its to nursing facilities and homes upon request. Please let us know if you’d like a visit. A good re-minder is to let us know when you hear of parishion-ers in the hospital. Our lists given us by the hospi-tals are not always reliable, and we want to ensure we know of a hospitalization so that we can provide support in a great time of need.

In a few weeks, we will have our annual Re-membrance Weekend. 21 people have had their fu-nerals celebrated with St. Bernard in the past year. It’s a special time to pray for them and to remember their families.

Please know we are always here to support you. If there is ever anything I can do to help with regard to pastoral care, please reach out.

Blessings,

Connie Hultman Director of Pastoral Care

W E L C O M E T O T H E P A R I S H O F S T . B E R N A R D !

It has been fun to welcome some new families to the program and meet our younger families at the Augustine group. If you are new to the area and haven’t meet parishioners, taking a class is a great way to grow in your faith and meet new people.

As you know, life-long learning is the prac-tice at St. Bernard. For my 20+ years here, I have offered a variety of adult classes, retreats and trips, along with classes and Sacramental preparation for our children. I try to offer day and evening programs to meet people’s schedules. If you are not seeing a time that works for you. let me know. I hope you are able to take at least one a year. Right now, we have a class on St. Paul’s letter to the Romans. We also have a group that meets on Tuesday mornings to discuss the Sunday Scriptures for the upcoming weekend. It is a “drop-in” class - come when you are able! We’re looking forward to our Advent book study: Jesus and the Jewish Roots of Mary. Please sign up so materials can be offered.

All parishoners are invited to attend our monthly Core Lesson on the first Sunday morning of the month, 11:30am–12:30pm. This year’s theme focuses on becoming disciples through the Catholic tradition. Core Lesson is our main formation time for those seeking Sacraments. It runs September through June, but you can join anytime.

I am thankful for the support that the parish-ioners have given me to help with faith formation. I am here to serve but need your participation and a helping hand to make it all happen. If you feel God calling you to serve in the formation ministry, there is a space for you. Office help, setting up rooms and facilitating classes are all a part of this ministry. Those willing to help in Spanish would also be a great asset to our programming! Watch for more classes coming up second semester!

I wish you a blessed fall,

Geri Nehls Director of Faith Formation

It's hard to believe another church year will soon be coming to a close and Advent is just around the corner. I'd like to share some of the things our pastoral ministry does within our parish and some of the community outreach we are in-volved in. We currently provide the Sacraments to Madison Pointe Assisted Living, Belmont Nursing Home, Oak Park Assisted Living (in conjunction with St. Dennis) and Oakwood East.

Congratulations to

Our New Transitional Deacons!

Organ Refurbishment We enjoy a beautiful organ here at St. Bernard. In the liturgical docu-ments of the Church, the organ is the primary instrument for the offer-ing of sacred music. In 1995, the organ console was rebuilt and restored, and since that time, we have been doing routine tuning and mainte-nance. Organs are very much like automobiles. Regu-lar maintenance is essential, but as the vehicle ages, parts need to replaced, rebuilt and refurbished to keep it in tip-top condition. Organs are complex instruments. The portion of the organ we “see” most often is the console. Organists are seated at the console, and the keys they press and buttons they push make the organ sound beautiful! There’s a whole other part of the or-gan that oftentimes goes unnoticed, but if not properly maintained, would make the console a piece of furni-ture. In addition to the console, the organ consists of pipes, wind chambers, complex electronics and other hardware. We had a thorough evaluation of the organ by Nolte Organ Co. in Milwaukee - a highly respected vendor in the business of church organs. We’re work-ing on a plan to make necessary repairs, upgrades and refurbishments to improve the organ’s performance and to maintain its beauty for many years to come. I am happy to share with you that a very generous be-quest was recently given to the parish, and a portion of the monies donated will be used for the work that’s needed on the organ. As we develop a plan, I’ll make sure to keep everyone informed on the progress. -Fr. Michael

The parish has many dedicated parishioners ready to assist you with prayer in times of need. To place your intentions on the Prayer Line, please call Connie (244-6624) or Carol (244-4817).

Prayer Line

October is a month dedicated to praying for the sanc-tity of life. Each year, the 40 Days for Life Campaign sponsors a month-long vigil of prayer outside Planned

Parenthood on Orin Rd. Our wit-ness and presence in prayer re-veals to the hearts of many that we as Catholics are dedicated to the preservation of life in all its stages - most especially in the womb. St. Bernard prays at Planned

Parenthood each Tuesday, from 2:00pm - 4:00pm. Please plan to come throughout the month of October and join those in prayer for the sanctity of life and for the hearts of all women to choose life for their chil-dren.
