1) With engine cold, remove valve cover. On Celica 3S-GTEmodels, throttle body must be removed prior to valve cover removal.See THROTTLE BODY article in N - REMOVE/INSTALL/OHAUL. 2) Rotate crankshaft pulley and align pulley groove with "0"mark on timing belt cover to set No. 1 cylinder at TDC of compressionstroke. Ensure rocker arms on cylinder No. 1 are loose and those oncylinder No. 4 are tight. If not, rotate crankshaft 360 degrees andrealign timing marks. 3) Measure and record intake valve clearance of cylinders No.1 and 2, and exhaust valve clearance on cylinders No. 1 and 3. SeeFig. 1. 4) Rotate crankshaft clockwise 360 degrees and align grooveon crankshaft pulley with the "0" mark or pointer on timing beltcover. With cylinder No. 4 at TDC, measure and record intake valveclearance on cylinders No. 3 and 4, and exhaust valve clearance oncylinders No. 2 and 4. See Fig. 1. Note if valve clearance is withinspecification. See VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS table in thisarticle. 5) To adjust valves, rotate crankshaft pulley to positionlobe upward on the valve to be adjusted. Use Valve Clearance Adjuster(SST 09248-55010) to press valve lifter downward.

Page 2: Adjustments 4 Cyl Efi

CAUTION: Prior to pressing lifter downward, ensure adjustment shim notch area is toward the spark plug. See Fig. 2.

6) Press valve lifter downward using SST (A) and install SST(B) between camshaft and valve lifter and remove SST (A) See Fig. 2.Using a small screwdriver, remove adjustment shim. 7) Using a micrometer, measure thickness of shim justremoved. Select a new shim that will give correct valve clearance. SeeVALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS table in this article. Shims areavailable in thickness from .0787" (2.000 mm) to .1299" (3.300 mm) forCelica 3S-GE and 3S-GTE models or .0984" (2.500 mm) to .1299" (3.300mm) for all other models in .002" (.05 mm) increments. 8) Install proper thickness shim. Using SST (A), pressdownward on valve lifter and remove SST (B). Recheck valve clearance.Install remaining components.

replaced or vehicle fails emissions testing.

NOTE: Adjust idle speed with air cleaner installed, all air intake system hoses and vacuum lines connected, EFI system wiring connectors tight, transmission/transaxle in Neutral, all accessories and cooling fan off (if equipped) and engine at normal operating temperature.

CAUTION: Some tachometers may not be compatible with ignition system. Consult tachometer manufacturer before connecting tachometer to system. DO NOT allow tachometer terminal to become grounded or ignitor and/or coil may be damaged.

CAMRY & CELICA (3S-FE)

1) Install tachometer to proper terminals. See Fig. 3.Install jumper wire between proper terminals of engine checkconnector. See Fig. 10 or 12. Operate engine at 1000-1300 RPM for 5seconds and return to idle speed. Note if idle speed is withinspecification. See IDLE SPEED SPECIFICATIONS table. 2) If idle speed requires adjustment, remove rubber boot fromtop of throttle body. See Fig. 18. Adjust idle speed adjusting screwto obtain correct idle speed. 3) Remove jumper wire and note idle speed. Idle speed shouldbe within specification. See IDLE SPEED SPECIFICATIONS table in thisarticle. If idle speed is not within specification, start engine andallow to idle for 30 seconds and then shut off. 4) Repeat procedure until idle data will be stored in theidle speed control and idle speed will be maintained. Removetachometer.

IDLE MIXTURE

NOTE: Idle mixture must be checked with air cleaner installed, all air intake system hoses and vacuum lines connected, EFI system wiring connectors tight, transmission/transaxle in Neutral, all accessories and cooling fan off (if equipped) and engine at normal operating temperature.

1) Ensure idle speed is within specification. Install jumperwire between proper terminals of check engine connector. See Figs. 10- 16. Connect positive (+) probe of voltmeter to terminal "VF" or"VF1" and negative (-) probe to terminal "E1". See Fig. 22. 2) Start engine and maintain engine RPM at 2500 RPM forapproximately 2 seconds. With engine RPM at 2500, count the amount oftimes that voltmeter fluctuates between the specified voltage. SeeIDLE MIXTURE TEST SPECIFICATIONS table in this article. 3) If the amount of fluctuations is less than the minimumamount, check for air leaks at the air induction system, defectiveairflow meter or throttle body. 4) If fluctuations were within specification, accelerate andhold engine at 2500 RPM for approximately 2 minutes. Install exhaustgas analyzer probe in tailpipe approximately 1.3 ft. at least. Waitone minute and check idle mixture readings. If readings are not withinspecification, see IDLE MIXTURE TROUBLE SHOOTING table in thisarticle.
