A DHESIVESNearly all woodworking projects require glue. Selecting the right glue for the job will often result in a joint that is stronger than the timber itself.

There are a wide variety of glues available and all have their place in woodworking. It is worthwhile considering your specific project and what glue would best suit the job at hand. Things to consider when making your selection are:Is the joint structural? Will it ever need to be reversed? Will it come into contact with moisture? Is it cross grain or end grain joining? Is it easy to clamp or do you require a quick stick? Are you gluing timber to timber or another material? How easy is it to access and clean up your job?The following is a basic guide and by no means an exhaustive list:Aliphatic Resin such as Titebond Original is an extremely strong “yellow” glue, superior to standard PVA, particularly suited to interior fine joinery. It has reasonable open time, cleans up with water and sets hard for planing and sanding. It sets to a semi-transparent yellow. Titebond 2 is water resistant in its cured state and better for end grain gluing, while Titebond 3 is rated as waterproof when fully cured.Epoxy Resin is a two pack glue, that is, it comes in two parts and must be mixed before it starts to cure. It is a very strong structural adhesive and is useful in situations where the joint may not be tight

It is also available in clear forms and can be tinted, so can be used to fill voids etc. Some epoxies can double as a finish in their own right, or be used as a clear grain filler, underneath another more traditional finish such as lacquer.Hide Glue is a traditional glue that provides a very strong joint, yet is reversible with heat and moisture if required. Often used in instrument making for example, where parts may need to be removed for repair in future.Super Glue, also known as Cyanacylate, is an extremely fast setting glue. Useful where clamps are impractical or where material other than wood needs to be joined. Available in a variety of viscosities.

Veritas Chair Doctor GlueIf a chair has a loose rung, an injection of Chair Doctor glue will first swell the rung and then bond it in position. The secret is the glue’s low viscosity. Rapid Cure Hardener

Rapid Cure R90 is a high viscosity, solvent free epoxy resin specifically formulated for use with H90 hardener to provide thin film or glue joint gela-tion.
