The proposed agreement “is designed to provide secure employment, safeguard against some of the more onerous Federal Government plans for industrial relations, and offer staff a much-needed pay rise of 8.74%”, Professor O’Kane said. She said the University’s proposed 8.74% (compounded) salary increase for staff over the next three years was predicated on realistic forecasts of revenue increases from fee income, consultancies and research. AN ADELAIDE UNIVERSITY study of South Australian primary school teachers has suggested that a majority of teachers’ judgements about the reading achieve- ments of young reception and primary children may be substantially wrong. The study indicated that more than one third of teachers’ assessments were in error by 12 months when estimating actual reading age, as indicated by a widely used test for accuracy and comprehension. The study also found the teachers had a highly significant tendency to over- estimate the reading skills of low- achieving students. The study’s authors say that teachers’ poor capacity to judge reading age may have serious implications for their ability to identify students who may need special assistance. The study was carried out as part of an Honours thesis in Psychology by student Caroline Bates, and reported in a paper by Ms Bates and Psychology Associate Professor Ted Nettelbeck. Dr Nettelbeck said he had had difficulty getting the paper published in Australian education journals. He said the study had “not been of particular interest” to the SA Department of Education, Training and Employment. He said the reason for the lack of interest may reflect the contemporary approach to teaching young children to read. While past teaching tradition had focused on assessment methods such as comparison and ranking of students, contemporary educators were more concerned with the accomplishments of individual students and what was needed for their progress. However, Dr Nettelbeck argues that measuring students’ performance against normative standards is important, particularly when identifying children who are struggling. “From a psychological point of view, in any other area of slower development the focus is on early intervention,” he said. “I think it is important to detect any sign of delayed reading achievement at an early age.” The study casts doubt on teachers’ ability to do this. It says that if teachers are to be in a position to intervene effectively when a child is falling behind age-level peers, they should be able to make “reasonably accurate assessments of reading achievement”. The study, conducted in 1997, involved 29 reception to Year 4 teachers in South Australia. The teachers nominated students aged between six and eight years, and consent was received for 112 students to participate. Teachers were provided with information about a widely-used test— the Neale Analysis of Reading Ability, Revised—which is used to measure reading accuracy and comprehension. Teachers were then asked to estimate their children’s reading accuracy and reading comprehension achievements scores, in terms of age peers. Analysis of the actual achievements of the children, as measured by the Neale test, compared with the teachers’ assessments, showed significant discrepancies. Students’ reading accuracy in a lower achievement group was appreciably overestimated. Essentially the same outcome was found for reading comprehension. About 32% of judgements for reading accuracy and 40% for reading comprehension were more than 12 months in error and these large errors were made at least once by about two- thirds of teachers. In total, about 75% of teachers’ judgements were inaccurate, to an extent thought by the authors to be likely to cause many parents concern. “These teachers misjudged student reading age by more than six months for reading accuracy and seven months for reading comprehension,” the paper says. Dr Nettelbeck added: “We acknowledge that it’s a small sample and that these children had been learning to read for from about one to two years. We recognise also that accuracy and comprehension constitute only a small part of what reading should involve. A DETAILED Enterprise Bargainingproposal has been given to staff unions byAdelaide University.

I was born Margaret Tidemann on 24April 1942 in Adelaide, went to schoolat Walford Church of England Girls’Grammar School (still called WalfordHouse when I first went there at theage of 4) from the ages of 4 to 16, andattended the University of Adelaidefrom 1959-62, where I enrolled inArts and took a First Class Honoursdegree in English, graduating at theend of 1962 at the age of nearly 21. Iwas an Adelaide girl in every respectand my horizons at that time werewide in imagination and reading, butnarrow in practice. I had once beenoutside South Australia—and thenonly to Melbourne on a brief visit withmy parents and five younger siblings,which I remember vividly because Ihad to travel some of the way in acaravan and got terribly sick—and I’dnever been overseas. Such anexperience—or the lack of it—was, Ithink, common to young Australiansof my generation, to whom theoutside world was known largely fromnewspapers (and The Advertiser andThe News were not the mostcosmopolitan of daily fare), pop songsand American films. But there werealso such things as the ABC (I used tolove the Argonauts) and theoccasional concert and visiting dramacompany.When I was at school intelligent girlsusually had to hide their brains undersome cover or other. There were fewbonus points to be gained among one’speers for cleverness or intellectualinterests. It is true that I found one ortwo fellow students at school who hadsimilar interests to mine, but for themost part I got my intellectualstimulation from my teachers (whowere very good to me) and frombooks. Years later, one of my youngersisters, who went to the same school,told me she sometimes used to lookup the names of previous borrowers ofbooks in the school library, to findthat mine was the last name listed—sometimes the only name. It was anexcellent library, and I readvoraciously and eclectically, both

there and in the South AustralianState Library, where I loved readingat the cool, dark desks in secludedrecesses during the hot summermonths.My father wanted me to become ascientist and tried to steer me in thatdirection, becoming rather resistantwhen, in the last two years of school, Idecided to study Humanities subjects (called Arts in those days ofcourse). It was a near thing, though,and I have sometimes regretted notgoing into the hard sciences, whereGenetics was the thing that turnedme on. Probably because I resistedthis path, my family required me tocontribute something towards myfinancial keep at university, eventhough I had both a CommonwealthScholarship and a State Bursary, andurged me into the Teachers’ Collegeand the system of bondedscholarships that I came to hate. Ihad no interest in being a secondaryschool teacher; I studied the requiredsubjects alongside my Arts subjects(and actually found some of themrather interesting), but, when themoment of escape came in 1963, Itook it, even though it meant payingback my bond while I was apostgraduate student at Oxford.What, then, did the University ofAdelaide mean to me? It meant somany things that I can only give avery brief account of them here. First,it meant the exhilaration ofintellectual challenge and breadth ofintellectual opportunity. Then I

started to meet other students (oftenolder than I was) who had similarinterests; we talked politics,philosophy, literature; we debated,acted in plays and generally had amarvellous time. I wrote poetry too inthose days. And there were membersof staff in all the Departments Istudied in—and several othersbesides, because Adelaide Universitywas quite small at that time—whoaccepted me as their equal andintroduced me to the world ofinternational scholarship andresearch. It is hard not to romanticisethe past, but I still think of thoseearly Adelaide days as the formativeperiod of my own academic careerwhen these generous scholarsaccepted me, and other seriousstudents, as their equals andinducted us into academic life. Icannot speak too highly of theprivilege of this experience and regretthat, in the pressure of thecontemporary university, it is simplynot possible to replicate it.

In the late 50s and the early 60smoney had started to flow again intothe Australian university system as aconsequence of the Murray Reportand the Menzies Government’simplementation of it. Although I didnot fully understand the politics ofthe situtation, I could see the benefitson the ground. I chose to do Honoursin English (though a number of othersubjects tempted me) and I entered avibrant, expanding Department full ofkeen, mostly new staff. Some of the

older members, like the marvellouslyeccentric Bryn Davies, were stillthere, but most of the appointments,under the wise and humane guidanceof Colin Horne, and later JohnColmer, were fairly new and mostlyyoung. It was a marvellous time andthe Department was full of life: one ofthe best things about it was that itwas not doctrinaire, it did not espousea particular critical line (and this wasa time when the Leavisite plague wasafflicting many English Depart-ments), nor did it separate the studyof English Language and MedievalLiterature from English Literaturesince 1500. Australian Literature wasalso fully integrated into ourcurriculum well before this happenedin other Australian English Depart-ments, thanks to the influence ofBrian Elliott and Geoff Dutton. It was my great good fortune that, atthe beginning of my second year, justas I was entering the Honoursstream, the Department chose torestore its coverage of Old and MiddleEnglish (relinquished in the leanyears before 1958) by appointing amember of staff to teach in this area.Ralph Elliott arrived at the beginningof 1960 and I began to lap up what hehad to offer: Old English, MiddleEnglish, Germanic Philology. In thefollowing year another medievalist,Peter Meredith, now a Professor ofEnglish Medieval Drama at theUniversity of Leeds, was appointed tothe Department. Although RalphElliott, who was an inspiring teacher,was not an Old Norse-Icelandicspecialist, he had had a soundphilological training, and he decidedto offer an off-the-curriculum OldNorse course in the lunch hours. Itcomprised him, a new Tutor, JohnAnderson (who later went toManchester) and me. This is what setme off on the academic career I havesince followed. I won a GeorgeMurray Travelling Scholarship fromthe University of Adelaide in 1963and took it up at the University ofOxford, where I studied Old Norseunder Gabriel Turville-Petre, then thesenior Old Norse scholar in theEnglish-speaking world. Since then, Ihave spent various periods of time inall the Scandinavian countries,including Iceland, as well as in theUK, the US and Germany. At theUniversity of Sydney, I am one of ateam of Old Norse-Icelandicresearchers who have kept Australiaon the international map in thissubject, but my beginnings lie at theUniversity of Adelaide.There is a lesson to be drawn fromthis biographical recollection. It isnow the case that the Australianuniversity system continues tomaintain the diversity of its teachingand research in the Humanities andin other disciplines with the greatestdifficulty. A story such as mine is nowvery hard to replay. The funding isdrying up again, and, though privateresources may help, they can never besufficient to support the range ofgeneralist studies that a matureuniversity system should have andwhich I enjoyed during my years atthe University of Adelaide. Talentedyoung Australian researchers are nowagain being lost to the Australianuniversity system, just as they werein the years before I attended theUniversity of Adelaide. It is sad to seehistory repeat itself in this way.

Margaret Clunies Ross is McCaugheyProfessor of English Language and EarlyEnglish Literature and Director of theCentre for Medieval Studies at theUniversity of Sydney. She has also held acollege lectureship at Lady Margaret Halland St Hilda’s College, Oxford (1965-68),and various travelling fellowships andvisiting appointments at institutions inEurope and North America. She was amember of the Humanities sub-panel ofthe Australian Research Grants Committee(1987) and of the Australian ResearchCouncil (1988-90) and a member of theAustralian Research Council from 1995-97.From 1995-98 she was President of theAustralian Academy of the Humanities, towhich she had been elected in 1990, andserved as President of the NationalAcademies’ Forum in 1997-98.

Margaret Clunies Ross is the author ofnumerous articles and eight books in twoseparate research fields: Old Norse-Icelandic Studies (with Anglo-SaxonStudies) and Australian Aboriginaltraditional songs and performing arts. Hermost recent books are Prolonged Echoes.Old Norse myths in medieval Northernsociety. Vol. 2: The reception of Norsemyths in medieval Iceland (Odense, 1998)and The Norse Muse in Britain, 1750-1820(Trieste, 1988).

Sustainable GrowthThe spring weather and enterprisebargaining have both led me to thinkabout growth. Anyone who has worked in Australianuniversities over the last fifteen years orso will tell you that it has been a time ofrestriction and hardship. They will tellyou about massive growth in studentnumbers at marginal funding rates, theclawback to create the ARC, increasedadministration and reporting, fundingcuts since 1996 with consequentredundancies and job insecurity, thedecline in research infrastructure, andenterprise bargaining that has producedmuch-needed salary increases but withoutgovernment funding to cover them. It hasall been extremely unpleasant!However, if you scrutinise the annualFinancial Statements of many Australianuniversities, in particular the Group ofEight, you will see that while operatinggrants (the government block grants touniversities) have dropped in real dollarterms, total revenue has increased. Sowhat’s the problem?In part the problem is that manyuniversities still see the operating grantas the prime driver of teaching andresearch activities, although, in our case,it makes up less than half our totalconsolidated revenue. And we stillcontinue to do all the activities in theseareas that we have always done, in theways we have always done them, so thatwe have “adjusted” to the declining unitrate by working harder. We have, alongwith other universities, been enrollingmore fee-paying students both fromoverseas and from Australia in anattempt to offset declining governmentfunding—but we have not alwaysadequately integrated the income fromthis into the rest of our activities in a waythat ensures we fully capture the benefits. The University has now proposed anEnterprise Bargain Agreement whichestablishes a mechanism for explicit,sustainable growth. Explicit, because thegrowth will be planned, and based onunderstanding the full costs of generatingit. Sustainable, because it will providethe mechanism for salary rises into thefuture (ie not just for this EnterpriseBargain). The University is proposingthat salary increases be contingent onincreases in a carefully selected set offunding sources (international andAustralian student fees and contractresearch). In parallel with the proposedEnterprise Bargain Agreement, theUniversity is also proposing that there bechanged arrangements for work. We willneed to be more flexible about allowingpeople to shine at what they do best.Some will prefer to spend more time onteaching, while others will be able tospend more on research. Many staff havebeen very supportive of a change to atrimester year, with academic staffteaching two of the three, and being ableto use the third for research and scholarlyactivities.Unless we take our future into our ownhands, universities can expect to becomeincreasingly miserable places. Our staffshould have the conditions and payappropriate to an institution aspiring tobe one of the great universities of theworld. Hopefully with this EnterpriseBargain proposal we will place ourselvesfirmly on the road to sustainable growth.

MARY O’KANE

ADELAIDE UNIVERSITY has pledged its humanitariansupport for the people of East Timor in the form ofaccommodation—if required—for Timorese refugees.

Following widespread concern around the Uni-versity about the crisis in East Timor, Vice-ChancellorProfessor Mary O’Kane has written to the Minister for Foreign Affairs offering the University’s assistance.

If evacuation of refugees becomes necessary, ProfessorO’Kane has offered accommodation for about 100refugees at the Roseworthy Campus.

In addition, the University has offered to assist later-year refugee students by helping them to completetheir studies at Adelaide. The University would alsowelcome refugee members of staff from the Universityof East Timor.

“We are extremely concerned about the plight of theEast Timorese people,” Professor O’Kane said.

“I dearly hope that these offers will not need to betaken up at all. However, the Australian Government

has been offered our assistance and we would bepleased to honour that commitment.

“Although our efforts may not amount to much in thegrand scheme of things, we hope that in some smallway we can provide the people of East Timor with asafe and welcoming haven.”

Professor O’Kane said Adelaide University con-tinued to value its long and developing relation-ship with Indonesia, “especially the valuable people-to-people contacts with our Indonesian students,academic colleagues in Indonesia, and our staff”, she said.

“Our offer to help the people of East Timor is a simpleone—an act of genuine concern for those who are going through intense suffering and hardship at thistime.”

Professor O’Kane said a long-term goal would be toestablish on-going links with the University of EastTimor, “to support the university as it adjusts to itsnew situation in an independent country”.

Vice-Chancellor offers Timor safe haven

ADELAIDE UNIVERSITY’S rep-utation as an Australian leader inresearch has been bolstered by therecent announcement of theInternational Researcher Exchange(IREX) grants.

The University has been awarded14 of the latest IREX grants, themost of any university in Australia.

IREX grants are awarded by theAustralian Research Council. Theyprovide funds for collaborationbetween Australian and overseasresearchers. The grants are also astrong measure of a university’sinternational reputation inresearch.

Out of 20 applications, AdelaideUniversity received 14 of the grants—a success rate of 70%. Thiscompares with the national successrate of 36.6% (89 grants out of atotal of 243 applications).

The total amount awarded toAdelaide University was $534,500over three years, which is morethan 40% of the total amount ofIREX grants (approximately$1,274,000) awarded in Australia.

The IREX grants are spread overfive of the University’s sixFaculties: Agricultural & NaturalResource Sciences; Engineering,Computer & MathematicalSciences; Humanities & SocialSciences; PALACE; and Science.

The research projects begin in theyear 2000. Projects funded underthe IREX scheme include:investigating new materials forelectronics, reducing aerodynamicsound, improving the quality of oliveoil, detecting leaks in Australia’smajor water pipe systems, andinstalling a new multi-telescopesystem at Woomera to study high-energy phenomena in the universe.

Adelaide University researcherswill collaborate on these and otherprojects with colleagues from theUK, France, Germany, Italy,Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland,Canada, the US, Mexico, Japan,Taiwan and India.

“Our success reflects our stronginternational research reputation,and is no real surprise,” said theVice-Chancellor, Professor MaryO’Kane.

“The fact that we have receivedgrants for 70% of our applicationsand been awarded more than 40%of the total grant funds in Australiasays a great deal about ourexpertise.

“This is another feather in the capfor Adelaide, proving yet again thatwe really are an Australian leaderin research and research training.”

Professor O’Kane said the proposalwas “a responsible and positiveplan for growth and security”.

“I believe that the strength of this approach is that it makesexplicit what has been implicit formuch of the University’s existence— that is, our existence has alwaysbeen contingent on our ability toattract support for core activities,such as our research. We have always survived on our

abilities; recent government policychanges have made that muchmore obvious.

“This plan calls for a collectiveeffort in which all staff benefit fromall our successes. This can only bepositive,” she said.

ECONOMISTS at the Universityof Adelaide are helping theirMongolian colleagues to meetthe challenges of the country’snew free-market economy.Currently the world’s biggestrecipient of foreign aid (percapita), Mongolia has a tran-sition economy which isadjusting to free marketconditions after years of Sovietcommunism.Last month, University ofAdelaide economist GlynWittwer travelled to thecapital, Ulaan Bataar, toaddress an economic seminar.Participants included twomembers of the Mongolianparliament.The visit was arranged by theMongolian Development Re-search Centre which has had aclose working relationship withthe University for several yearsthrough the Dean ofEconomics, Professor RichardPomfret.

Mr Wittwer, a ResearchAssociate at the University’sCentre for InternationalEconomics Studies, presenteda paper on Modelling Mon-golia’s economy using acomputable general equil-ibrium framework.“The paper basically com-pared elements of theAustralian economy withelements of the Mongolianeconomy, particularly thetyranny of distance,” MrWittwer said.“Australia was linked to theoutside world in 1872 by thetelegraph line.“In recent years, the Internethas linked Mongolia to theoutside world. “The Internet is very im-portant for the growth of thecountry’s emerging industriessuch as tourism, for example.”Mr Wittwer said one of theanalytical difficulties Mon-golia faced was that, under

the Soviet system, thecountry’s trained economistshad never had to considerconsumers when drawing upeconomic plans. He said the biggest barriers totrade at present were notinstitutional but infra-structural. “In a country the size ofQueensland, there is only onerail line, running north tosouth, and most of the roadsare cratered and unsealed.“But Mongolia does have ahigh degree of social cohesion. “It appears to be a peacefulsociety that tolerates minoritygroups. “Unlike many other regions,the transition after the collapseof the Soviet Union wasremarkably peaceful, and thiscould be important in helpingthe economy to move aheadmore quickly.”

THE 1999 Harold Woolhouse Prize has been awardedto Dr Markus Beck of the Department of Applied andMolecular Biology.

The Award, which is presented annually to thebest PhD student in the Faculty of Agriculturaland Natural Resource Sciences, honours Dr Beck’sground-breaking research into parasitic wasps. His investigations centred on wasps that injecttheir eggs into other insects such as caterpillars.Dr Beck, an Overseas Postgraduate ResearchAward student from Germany, examined themechanisms the wasps use to protect their eggsinside “host” insects.In particular, he sought to identify the genes usedfor immune protection of the eggs.In cases where several eggs are injected, Dr Beckstudied how interlarval competition decides whichof the wasp’s offspring lives to take over the host.He discovered that, within the wasp speciesVenturia canescens, two sub-populations employtwo genetically distinct reproduction strategieswhile using the same host insect as a food source.The discovery is important for the development ofpractical biological control strategies, particularlywasp release programs targeting insect pests.It has already resulted in a new collaborationbetween the Department’s researchers and aresearch team in the Netherlands.

A NEW conference in Adelaide is bringingtogether leading industry analysts fromaround the nation and overseas to developa practical and innovative approach torevitalise South Australia’s manufacturingsector.

The conference, called “ManufacturingProsperity”, will be launched by theSouth Australian Treasurer, Mr RobLucas, at the Adelaide Festival Centreon Wednesday, 21 September.“Manufacturing Prosperity” will lookat South Australia’s competitive futurein manufacturing from a realistic andpositive point of view. Conference aims to revitalise manufacturing

THE MAN widely regarded as the‘Father’ of China’s democracymovement, Mr Wei Jingsheng, has givena public talk to a packed lecture theatreat Adelaide University.Mr Wei, an electrician at Beijing Zooin the late 1970s, has spent all but sixmonths of the last 17 years (nearlyhalf his adult life) in prison for thepeaceful expression of his views onChinese politics, economic reform andforeign relations.Currently a visiting professor atColumbia University in New York, MrWei has been described as the mostimportant political prisoner of histime. In 1997 he published a bookentitled The Courage to Stand Alone.He has been awarded a number ofinternational prizes, including the

Olof Palme Award, The Robert F.Kennedy Human Rights Award andthe European Parliament’s SakharovPrize for Freedom of Thought. He hasalso been nominated for the NobelPeace Prize.Organised jointly by AdelaideUniversity’s Centre for Asian Studiesand the Department of Politics, MrWei’s public talk on Friday, 3September was delivered to a packedlecture theatre in the Napier building.His talk covered a range of issuesconcerning democratisation andhuman rights in China, his own timein prison and his dealings with theChinese leadership.The discussion after his presentationtouched upon a number of contro-versial areas, including China’s

reunification with Taiwan, the futureof Xinjiang Province and Tibet.The audience was amused by MrWei’s reference to his letter to the lateDeng Xiaoping, which asked theparamount leader of China to resign.“A few days later,” Mr Wei added withmock surprise, “he did!” (referring toDeng’s anticipated decision to resignfrom a number of his formal roles inthe Chinese government).After a lengthy question-and-answersession, Mr Wei found himself at thecentre of a large group of well-wisherseager to have photos taken with him,and to get his autograph. To these,and the many others listening to MrWei’s delivery, it was a memorabletalk, and an historic occasion.

German education leaders visit AdelaideAdelaide rowers up with the best

AMBER HALLIDAY AND MARKSPARNON (above) are not the type torest on their oars.Ms Halliday, a third-year Psychologystudent, and Mr Sparnon, a first-yearstudent of Medicine, are two of Aust-ralia’s most promising young rowers.Both represented their country at therecent Under-23 World Champion-ships (Nations Cup Regatta) inGermany—and both returned withmedals.Ms Halliday, who received a $1,000grant from Vice-Chancellor ProfessorMary O’Kane to compete in thechampionships, won gold in thewomen’s lightweight double scullswith Victorian rower Hannah Every.Mr Sparnon took bronze as part of the

men’s lightweight quad sculls team.For six weeks before the cham-pionships, both rowers participated inan intensive squad training session inMelbourne. Unable to reschedule his studies inAdelaide, Mr Sparnon had to embarkon a hectic schedule of weekly flightsto and from Melbourne.Ms Halliday, who has been rowingcompetitively for six years, puts hersuccess down to good coaching andstrong family support.She says the standard of Australianrowing is so high that her immediateambition is to be re-selected for theteam competing in next year’s Under-23 World Championships.

A DELEGATION of German universityleaders has visited Adelaide to discuss aground-breaking new Law course—one ofthe first offered jointly by an Australianuniversity and an overseas institution.Adelaide University has established afully-integrated joint degree program,the Master of Comparative Laws, withthe University of Mannheim.The course enables students to studythe different codes of law throughoutthe world. The course also helps

Australian students to gain a moredetailed understanding of the legalframework in the European Union.Students spend up to one semester inAdelaide and one semester atMannheim, and undertake adissertation at their home institution.The degree is awarded from bothinstitutions.Six German students are now inAdelaide under the program and twoAustralian students are in Germany.

Biography reveals new slant onlegendary Adelaide professorNEARLY 60 years after his death, Professor ArchibaldWatson remains a legendary figure at the University ofAdelaide.

The brilliant, eccentric surgeon and anatomist, whoheaded the School of Anatomy for 35 years (1885-1920), was renowned as an adventurer, a womaniserand flouter of convention.Stories of his exploits are legion.He once stole the head from a corpse at AdelaideHospital morgue and replaced it with a cracked pot.For recreation, he liked to ride his motorbike aroundthe University’s anatomy room. When he retired from academic life he spoke justfive words to assembled well-wishers: “You are allbloody hypocrites”.Watson is remembered as rogueish, inspirational,cantankerous and unorthodox.But a new biography coinciding with the 150thanniversary of his birth argues that Watson’s“loveable eccentricity” was in fact a carefullycultivated pose to divert attention from a shamefulepisode in his youth.The book, by Melbourne-based author JenniferCarter, reveals new details of Watson’s involvementin “black-birding”—kidnapping Pacific Islanders forsale as slave labour.In old age, Watson brushed off the episode asanother amusing interlude in his action-packed life. Ms Carter, however, provides convincing evidencethat his involvement was more sinister.Her book, Painting the Islands Vermilion: ArchibaldWatson and the Brig Carl (Melbourne UniversityPress) publishes for the first time a log Watson keptof a blackbirding voyage in the South Seas.Ms Carter found the log among a collection ofWatson’s papers lodged in the National Library ofAustralia by the late biochemist, Dr Hedley RalphMarston. (Marston had planned, but never completed, his ownbiography of the surgeon.)“During Watson’s lifetime, people had heard storiesabout his involvement in blackbirding,” Ms Cartersaid.“The medical community knew he had been engagedin dark deeds in the South Seas but no one pursued it. “It was only after he retired and started cruising (asa ship’s doctor) that Watson began to talk about it. “He probably felt a need to unburden himself as he

got older, but he did it in such a way that he toldonly a vestige of the truth.“The picture he presented of himself was of abuccaneering, romantic pirate.” Ms Carter’s research has established that Watson,who was born the son of a wealthy pastoralist inTarcutta, New South Wales, left Australia in 1869,aged 20, to supervise his father’s land holdings in Fiji.In December 1871 he joined the brig Carl at Levuka,supposedly as a passenger.The Carl was on its second “recruitment” voyage inthe South Seas, kidnapping islanders for sale inPeru, the Guianas or Queensland. Four months earlier, 70 captured islanders had beenmassacred aboard the brig off the Solomon Islands. Watson kept a journal of the second voyage fromJanuary to April 1872.When the brig returned to Levuka it became thetarget of an official investigation. Crew members were charged with kidnapping andmurder, but Watson, although arrested, fled beforehe could be charged officially. In an unsworn deposition before his escape, Watsonadmitted that the brig had kidnapped 101 men fromdifferent islands during its second voyage, but hedenied any personal involvement. Jennifer Carter argues that this is unlikely.“He claimed he went on the cruise for his health, butit’s very obvious from the log that he was wellacquainted with sailing ships. “He may not have been involved in the first terriblevoyage of the Carl but it’s highly likely he wasinvolved in this kind of thing (blackbirding) before.”Even if Watson was not personally involved inmurder and kidnapping, MsCarter argues that hewas still culpable.She writes: “…a young, able-bodied passengerremained aloof from the kidnapping: he said and didnothing while fellow human beings … were bullied,persecuted, frightened out of their wits and cast intothe darkness of a hold when they had knownnothing but fresh air and daylight all their lives…”Watson fled to Europe and went on to studymedicine in Germany, France and England.In 1885, aged 35, he returned to Australia to becomethe first Elder Professor of Anatomy at theUniversity of Adelaide.He went to the Boer War as a service officer in 1900

and was a consulting surgeon to Australian troops inEgypt during the First World War.Throughout his life, Watson kept extensive diariesand “commonplace books”.Carter says these reveal a reflective man who wassubject to bouts of depression—a picture at oddswith the public clown. “I know biographers are supposed to like theirsubjects, but most of the time I didn’t like mine,” shesaid.“The only time I felt a real sympathy with Watson waswhen I read his notes about performing anatomy onyoung men of 20 and 21 during the First World War ...“I could feel his anger then on behalf of his fellowman.“Watson was an inspirational teacher but I think hewas a very lonely, vulnerable person with no one toconfide in. The diaries and commonplace booksbecame very important to him.“He seemed to always have a coterie of youngerpeople around him, people more inclined to admirethan to question him. I think that was a goodindication of his vulnerability.”

European wasp expert appointedEUROPEAN WASP research at AdelaideUniversity has a new sting in its tail followingthe appointment of Dr Andy Reeson from theInstitute for Virology, Oxford.

Dr Reeson has taken up a postdoctoralappointment at Adelaide as part of theUniversity’s three-year project into thecontrol of European wasp.The study is funded by the StateGovernment through Luminis and isbased in the Department of Applied &Molecular Ecology (Waite Campus).Dr Reeson, an expert on the diseases ofinsects, will be using his knowledge toexplore possible options for the biologicalcontrol of European wasp.One of the first priorities of Dr Reeson’sresearch is to study queen wasps, whichare active throughout the Spring.At this time of year, queen wasps emergefrom their winter hibernation sites andseek out new places in which to buildnests. Dr Reeson needs live specimens ofqueens to initiate nests in the laboratory,which can later be used to assesspotential control agents.Queen wasps are slightly larger than the

more familiar worker wasps, and havesimilar markings.Anyone can help with this research. Ifthey see a hibernating or newly emergedqueen, they can collect the live wasp in ajar. The specimen can then be collectedby Dr Reeson.However, Dr Reeson warns that membersof the community who try to capture livewasp queens should be extremely careful.“Individual wasps can sting and theyshould NOT be picked up by hand,” DrReeson said.“Using a jar and a lid is the best method,but anyone who is allergic to insect stingsor not confident about collecting aspecimen should not be involved.“If nests are encountered—and this isunlikely at this time of year—they shouldNOT be disturbed as this can result in thewasps becoming aggressive,” he said.

THE QUAINTLY NAMED ‘Old House’, located inpicturesque surroundings at Piccadilly in theAdelaide Hills, was the venue for the annualPhilosophy Club Camp during the first weekendof Spring.

Those who attended were treated to averitable feast of stimulating ideas for themind, as well as fine food for the body,courtesy of the remarkable gastronomic skillsof philosopher/chef Mr Vlad Popescu!The weekend was highlighted by talks on a wide variety of subjects ranging fromLove to the relevance of MadhyamikaBuddhism to fundamental debates withincontemporary western philosophy; and fromthe difficulties of imputing responsibility forthe actions of collectivities, to whether thereare fundamental differences in the thinkingpatterns characteristic of different cultures.Perhaps the most provocative talk wasAssociate Professor Ian Hunt’s “A ModestProposal for the new Millenium” in which he‘advocated’ the reintroduction of slavery as ameans of providing for the needs of the

growing economic underclass in advancedwestern societies! The title is, of course, adeliberate allusion to Jonathon Swift’s famousoriginal “A Modest Proposal”, in which hesarcastically urged that Irish babies be killed,sold and eaten, for they would surely be aswell off as those Irish destined to destitutionunder British rule. The serious point behindProfessor Hunt’s talk was that the argumentsespoused by many ‘economic rationalists’could equally well be used to justify slavery,‘voluntarily’ entered into, of course!As well as organising the annual camp, thePhilosophy Club also presents regular talksthroughout the year to which all are cordiallyinvited. Obituary: Rodney Levinge 1922-1999ROD LEVINGE, a well-known member of theengineering profession, died peacefully of a heartattack on Monday, 23 August 1999.Rod was planning to submit his PhD thesis inthe near future, in the Department of Electricaland Electronic Engineering at the University ofAdelaide.He had a long and fruitful career as anelectronics engineer in England, and later, inDSTO in Australia. His career spanned morethan two generations of electronic advances. Atthe end he was still making contributions toforward-looking innovations for industry.With a Higher National Diploma (1951) he wasappointed team leader at Vickers ArmstrongAircraft in Weybridge, England and wasresponsible for the design of navigationsystems, radar and inertial, for guidedweapons. Information gained in appliedadvanced control theory was passed on toengineering colleges to help reshape theircourses. In 1961, in conjunction with GGGouriet at Wayne Kerr Laboratories, hepatented a new method for measuring transferfunctions. Using analogue techniques, themethod was later superseded (1968) by the fastfourier transfer transform.As a team leader with Solartron and MarconiSpace and Defence Systems he designed radarand navigation aid simulators. These wererequired for training and the study of tacticaluse of systems. For adequate realism secondand third generation computers required extra

digital hardware to operate in real time. Inparticular, simulation of PPI radar displayshad to include ground echoes, sea clutter, rain,height holes, as well as moving targets with orwithout FFI. Sonar had to simulate thermallayers, sea noises and the known signatures ofvarious vessels.At DSTO he made a study of modal analysisand of the best methods to extract high qualitydata. In addition the analysis of time seriesdata from trials required the design of digitalfilters. The study of aircraft flutter requiredthe design of an in-flight force generator.Rod served the profession in many ways andnotably through the IEE Overseas Committeein South Australia where he held severalcommittee positions and and led the Committeeas its Chairman in the mid-1980s. He was active as the international liaisonmember of the committee for the InternationalConference on Acoustics Speech and SignalProcessing in the three years up to 1994, andhe organised a home-stay system for delegatesfrom less fortunate countries so that thisICASSP was the first in which zero-costaccommodation was available.He is survived by his wife, Madeleine anddaughter, Nicole. While we regret his passingit is with admiration and pleasure that we notehe led a full and exemplary life until the end.

Alumnus presentssuper science talkADELAIDE PHYSICS graduate Igor Bray, now Associate Professorin the School of Chemistry, Physics and Earth Sciences at FlindersUniversity, recently presented a superb talk in the Rennie Theatreenigmatically titled: “The Reality of the Fictitious Forces, AtomicCollisions and Conflict Resolution”.

The talk was the second in this year’s series of evening talksorganised by the Science and Mathematical Sciences Chapterof the Alumni Association.In an exciting presentation which included some clever originalanimations, Dr Bray suggested that the key to understandinglife, whether at the macroscopic or at the microscopic level, is tochoose a frame of reference which simplifies the interactions ofinterest.Depending upon the frame of reference, the forces which wefeel and understand as centrifugal or coriolis forces might bepseudoforces. The talk discussed how these fundamentallessons of physics might be applied in everyday life as well ashow they have led to immense progress in understandingatomic collision theory. Dr Bray described diverse applications ranging from NASA’sHubble Space Telescope program through to how his team isbuilding a better light bulb. Intelligent questions came fromthe school students present, and there was some spiriteddiscussion on the alternative approach to understanding the“fictitious” forces.Igor Bray was the joint winner, with Yuri Kivshar, of the 1998Pawsey medal, awarded by the Australian Academy of Sciencefor outstanding research in physics by scientists not over theage of 40 years for work carried out mainly in Australia. IT’S turning out to be a great year forElder Conservatorium Honourspercussionist Nick Parnell.

First he was one of only two SouthAustralian finalists in the AustralianYoung Performers Award in Perthwhere he played with the WesternAustralian Symphony Orchestra. Hethen went on to win the Elder Con-servatorium’s Concerto Competitionand now he’s landed first prize at the1999 Adelaide Eisteddfod in the Per-cussion, Woodwind and Brass category.For his winning performance at theEisteddfod Nick Parnell playedRhapsody by Ney Rosauro, a 30-minute concerto. This piece involvedplaying several multi-percussioninstruments including vibraphoneand some unusual Brazilian instru-ments: the Shekere, a type of gourdand a Repineque drum. He wasaccompanied in the competition bypianist Leigh Harold, who was theother South Australian finalist in theYoung Performers Award.Nick Parnell recently gave a highlysuccessful free concert in August and

THE UNIVERSITY OF ADELAIDETheatre Guild will present thesecond in its “Classic Curiosities”season of moved playreadings onSunday 26 September.

This month’s offering is TheCenci (1819) by leading Romanticpoet, Percy Bysshe Shelley. The Cenci was Shelley’s firstattempt at writing drama, a formof composition for which hethought he had no talent. The play was offered to themanagement of Covent Gardenand Drury Lane, but declinedbecause of its subject, whichdealt with the incestuous passionof Count Francesco Cenci for hisdaughter Beatrice. There is aptness in the TheatreGuild’s choice of The Cenci. Four hundred years ago thismonth the historical LadyBeatrice Cenci, her elder brotherGiacomo and stepmotherCountess Lucretia were executedby order of Pope Clement VIII fortheir part in the murder of CountCenci.The play has rarely been per-formed—the last production byan Adelaide company was by the

Adelaide University DramaticSociety (AUDS) in 1953. The Theatre Guild’s movedreading offers the chance foraudiences to decide whether theplay has life, or is just a curiosityof theatrical history.Director Alex Kirk has no doubtof the play’s suitability for perfor-mance.“Lovers of Shelley’s verse will be delighted at the restraint and skill used in the preparationof the text for performance,” hesays. “Shelley’s detractors will findthemselves pleasantly sur-prised at the play’s flow andthose not familiar with the poet,or familiar only with his verse,will find this reading afascinating eye-opener.”

LeftDirectionsconferenceA THREE-DAY conference focusing onleft-of-centre politics will take place atthe University of Adelaide from 22-24September.

The event, Left Directions, willfeature broad-ranging discussions onissues including socialist basics,social justice and welfare, class,gender, education and aboriginalrights.

A moment of lightIn the whole appalling saga ofEast Timor over past weeks,the Vice-Chancellor’s offer ofaccommodation on RoseworthyCampus for East Timorese

refugees is one of the few small moments oflight in a week of depression, anger anddistraction. History might have somethingdifferent to say about the “best efforts of ourleaders” (past and present) which she referredto on ABC radio, but that’s another matter. Asmall gesture, in the context of the enormity ofthe fate of the people, as the Vice-Chancellorsaid, but I totally support her action, andapplaud her concern.More than any other number of repetitions ofthe self-congratulatory mantra of “excellencein research and training” which trips off thelips (and pens) of members of staff at everyopportunity, THIS is the sort of thing whichwill make the University great, at least in theeyes of the rest of the world. Perhaps whenthings settle down, the University mightprevail on the Government to considerfollowing this example, with an offer ofassistance to students from East Timor, oreven secondment of staff to the University inDili (if it still exists).In the unthinkable event that the killing inEast Timor continues, I hope that Roseworthycan accommodate some of those who survive,so that at least a few people from East Timorwill know that ordinary people here don’tsubscribe to the sentiment expressed bySamuel Clemens when he facetiously wrote,“In statesmanship get the formalities right,never mind about the moralities”.

Project Endeavour is moving positivelytowards its initial milestones of:

• defining the new business processes and information systems to support Human Resources, Finance, Student Administration; and

• implementing the Payroll, General Ledger, Accounts Payable and Purchasing modules of PeopleSoft and the Research Master system.

The Project Teams are now focused onestablishing the appropriate mechan-isms to support staff across the Univer-sity after the implementation of the newsystems. To this end, two roles havebeen identified to perform criticalcommunications and support functionswithin a Faculty—those of ChangeFacilitator and Super User.

Change Facilitators will be responsiblefor the ongoing communication ofchange objectives associated with ProjectEndeavour and for obtaining feedbackfrom colleagues to ensure issues andconcerns are addressed by Project TeamLeaders and/or members before andafter implementation of each system.

Super Users will support the day-to-dayusers of the new systems and processesfollowing implementation. They will bethe first point of contact for staff for anyproblems and will provide a criticalcoaching/mentoring role.

Change Facilitators and Super Usershave been identified in consultation with

Faculty heads and will undergo initialtraining during September and October.

University to hostinternational conference inapplied computer scienceDr Friedrich Recknagel, Department of Soil andWater, has been appointed as chair of theInternational Scientific and Organising Committeefor the 2nd International Conference on Applicationsof Machine Learning to Ecological Modelling(AMLEM) to be held in Adelaide from 27 November -1 December 2000. The decision was made at the firstAMLEM Conference in Toulouse, France inNovember 1998, where Dr Recknagel was invited as akeynote speaker. The successful bid to host thisconference in Adelaide is in recognition of thepioneering work of Dr. Recknagel’s Aquatic EcologyResearch Group in the area of predictive modelling offreshwater ecosystems by fuzzy logic, artificial neuralnetworks and genetic algorithms.

The conference will focus on innovative research areassuch as ecological data mining and hybrid ecologicalmodelling by state-of-the-art machine learningtechniques.

The conference will be organised in closecollaboration with the National Research Centre forAquatic Ecology at University Paul Sabatier inToulouse and is sponsored by the InternationalSociety for Ecological Modelling (ISEM).

Bank Account forSalary Payments

The University is in the process ofimplementing a new HumanResource/Payroll System whichwill become effective later thisyear.

Direct credit of net salaries intobank accounts has been availablefor over 10 years and is a moreefficient and secure method ofpayment than issuing cheques.Salary deposits can be accessedprior to 9am on the pay day,whereby financial institutionsrequire a three day clearance oncheques. Provided correct bank/building society/credit unionaccount details are supplied to thePayroll Office the salary paymentscannot be lost or depositedincorrectly.

In order to facilitate effectivechange over to the new system, theUniversity has adopted a newpolicy that all employees willrequire an account with aBank/Credit Union/BuildingSociety for direct credits of salary.

The Alice Davey AwardThe Alice Davey Award has been established for the purpose offostering the development of research in the field of Sudden InfantDeath Syndrome in memory of Alice Grace Davey who died ofSudden Infant Death Syndrome in 1994.

• The Award consists of a medal and a monetary award, the annual value of which is subject to the availability of funds as determined by the Medical School, Faculty of Health Sciences.

• The successful recipient shall be the individual who has contributed the most meritorious recognised scholarly work relevant to SIDS research or who is deemed to have the potential to make a significant contribution to the field of SIDS research.

• Individuals who are, or who were at the time of undertaking the research, a student, staff member or title holder of the University of Adelaide, shall be eligible to apply.

• Nominations are called for annually by the Medical School, Faculty of Health Sciences and the closing date for the Award is 8 October.

Undergraduate MedicalResearch Vacation Scholarshipsfor 1999-2000The University of Adelaide offers Vacation Scholarships to provideundergraduate students with an opportunity to participate inmedical research projects. These projects are to be carried outduring the summer vacation. The Scholarships are tenable up to amaximum of eight weeks during the vacation. The stipend will be$150 per week. The final 2 weeks payment will be made only afterthe receipt of a satisfactory report in the form of a short, scientificcommunication (including an abstract). In addition, awardeeswould be expected to give a verbal presentation within theDepartment or on a Faculty-organised basis.*

Projects can be carried out in University Departments, the IMVS andaffiliated hospitals which provide appropriate facilities. They are tobe supervised by an appropriate research worker or clinician who isrequired to supply a written agreement regarding his/her ability andwillingness to provide the necessary supervision.

ELIGIBILITY

The Scholarships are open to undergraduate students of theUniversity of Adelaide. Applicants should have successfullycompleted at least two years of their course at the time thescholarship commences.

All arrangements for acceptance and supervision by a Universitydepartment must be made by the applicant who may only hold onescholarship at any one time. As a rule, the project will be undertakenindividually; however, consideration will be given to applicants whomay elect to work in pairs on a particular project if such anarrangement has the approval of the relevant Head of Department.

It is not possible at this time to detailthe specific technology, however the netresult was an offer of space in thebrewing cellar for the apparatus, theprovision of 1000 litres of un-filteredbeer, and the assignment of two fourthyear students and one post grad for afour week stint to conduct the tests.

Concerned about the students’ “well-being”, Business Development ManagerPaul Szuster paid a visit to theKensington establishment earlier thismonth. The three students were found in the depths of the brewingcellar busy taking samples and puttingthem to the test.

Hutt) reported that the students werediligent, focused, self-motivated—andsober.

Glowing compliments are verysatisfying, and the three representativesof the Chemical EngineeringDepartment are to be congratulated for

being such good ambassadors.
