ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION \T\ see continuation sheet

Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the community.

Architecturally, this is an extrodinary example of a c.mid 1880's summer residence. In terms of design quality craftsman ship, as well as state of preservation, this house is second to none in Winthrop. Even the c. early 20th c. addition of a rubblestone and mortar wall with jagged rock forms along the tops of the porch railings furthers the overall rustic appeal of this clapboard and weathered wood shingle clad house. This house appears as T-shaped in plan on the 1886 Floyd map of Winthrop. Its main facade features an open front porch which wraps around its south west corner. The original.solid and wood shingle clad porch railings were replaced by rubblestone and mortar railings at the front of the house. The square porch posts culminate in curvilinear brackets. Projecting from the center of the main facade's porch is a hood in the form of a pedimented gable which is supported by saw- cut brackets with pendants.Behind this pediment is a large gable with double windows containing typically Queen Anne sash configuration: a large center pane surrounded by small square panes. In general this houses's windows exhibit identical multi pane upper sash treatments over 2 standard size sash. Returning to the main facade's center gablejt should be noted that the a[pex of this gable is set off by horizontal stick work and is filled with scalloped shape shingles. In fact .there is a very strong Stick Style component at work here with verticle and horizontal stick work in evidence on the end wall gables. Situated on either side of the center gable are distinctive, octagonal dormers with pyramidal roof caps. The end wall gables exhibit lunettes with solid and (continued)
