ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION I 1 see continuation sheet

Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the community.

332 Shirley Street is a well preserved example of late 19th century two family housing in Winthrop. This house faces a small front yard which is enclosed by an interesting early 20th century fence composed of concrete posts and iron rods. A flight of concrete steps with stepped shoulders leads to a full length front porch and the center entrance. The porch is characterized by high and solid wood shingle covered walls from which spring square Doric posts which support a flat porch roof with well dcetailed dentil course and small saw cut brackets. The center entrance is flanked by two story octagonal bays and, more immediately on the right, a small square window containing colorful stained glass. This window is repeated on the floor above,to the right of the porch door. In general, windows are fully enframed and contain 1/1 wood sash. The roof's cornice treatments echo those of the front porch.

HISTORICAL NARRATIVE l L I see continuation sheet {

, Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local (or state) history. Include uses of the building and the role(s) the ownersloccupants played within the community.

Situated near the corner of Pearl Street, 332 Shirley Street was evidently built during the 1890's. Prior to 1875, this house's lot was part of a large parcel of land owned by the Wheeler heirs. In 1875, Dr. Samuel ingalls purchased this tract and set out several hundred house lots and streets in a section that became known as Ocean Spray. Dr. Ingalls is credited with the naming of the streets. Dolphin , Pearl, Neptune, Wave Way etc. were all names associated with the lore of the sea. By 1886, this lot was part of a larger parcel labled Estate of Samuel Deshon on the Winthrop Atlas of that year. This house's construction date is unclear. The 1896 Winthrop Atlas shows a large structure and a small structure labeled L. Williams. No Williams are listed at this address in the 1890's directories. The smaller of the two structures maybe too small to have been the present two family house. The first known owner was Charles L. Hatch who is listed as this house's owner on the 1906 Atlas. In 1901 he lived nearby at 19 Dolphin Avenue . He was a grocery and provisions dealer who had a store on Shirley Street. By 1914, this house was owned by C. F. Coggswell. (no listing in directories). By 1916, this house's residents included Joseph P. Chase, clerk and Mrs.Alexander Holmes, (continued) BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES | | see continuation sheet
