VA Disks
BMC Atrium Discovery makes intensive use of disk resource Deploy using the highest IO disk speed resource
Low disk IO impacts performance and scanning rate Use the Virtual Appliance capability to have a second disk dedicated to
database files This allows the system to split the two most intense operations, writing
database files and maintain transaction log, across two separate disks to avoid contention

VMware Tools & Time
After deployment of a VA the version of VMware Tools on the VA must be upgraded to the latest version
From the Options tab of the VMware Tools Control Panel, click the Update button.
Select Automatic VMware Tools Upgrade. Click Upgrade.
Consider the time zone and configure accordingly
Additionally NTP must be setup to ensure there is no clock skew

Obtain VMServer 2.0 (1)

Enter registration details and email address to receive the (essential) license activation codes

Click continue, after providing name and email address Will be asked for more details and most importantly about how many
license keys you require to install VMServer on Windows and/or Linux Choose at least one Windows License then click register

Click on the link to download VMServer 2 Download is ~600MB so it might take a while depending on your connection
Check your email for the activation link to access License key(s)
Check spam filter

Double Click on the downloaded VMware-server Application file After a few minutes you will be prompted to continue

Click next, accept the license agreement and click next again

You may want to deselect “Allow virtual machines to start and stop automatically”

Click Finish Complete the installation by clicking on Yes to restart the machine

Training VA Location and Compression
The Atrium Discovery VA needed for training will be provided On a DVD or some other storage device Or download from the website
The file will be compressed to save space and help with transfer Use 7-zip to unpack both .zip and .tgz file types
A copy of 7-zip is included with training VA Or download a copy of 7-Zip

Install 7-Zip
Click on Install Click Finish to complete installation

Expand the VA zip file
Right click on the downloaded VA zip file and click on 7-Zip and then on Extract files
Change the location that the zip file will be extracted to the virtual machine storage path as per the step in VMServer 2.0 Installation Part 4

Add VA to VMServer (1)
Click Yes to proceed and to ignore the site security message
Enter the same Login name and password to you used to log into the PC
Open VMware Server Console by clicking the desktop icon:

You will now see the VMware Infrastructure Web Access console

Click on “Add Virtual Machine to Inventory” in the Commands section on the right hand side
Click on “standard” in the Inventory section

Back in the inventory section, click on the VA icon and wait for the section to load on the right then click on the green triangle play button

If you receive the message below regarding available memory, choose Reduce Memory and click OK
