Adding Respondus LockDown Browser to a Quiz 

Respondus LockDown Browser (RLB) is a custom browser that locks down the testing 

environment to deter cheating in D2L. When RLB is turned on, students are unable to copy, 

print, access other applications, or visit a website while taking an online quiz or exam. There is a 

new RLB tab in the D2L quiz tool. Instructors will use this tab to manage the settings for RLB and 

Respondus Monitor. Respondus Monitor is an add‐on feature that enables students to use a 

webcam to record themselves during the quiz. To set up a quiz in D2L that requires students to 

use RLB, follow these steps: 

Steps 

1. Access a course on D2L, click Assignments, and then Quizzes.  

 

2. Click LockDown Browser to pull up the RLB Dashboard, which may take up to 10 

seconds to load.  

 

  

3. A list of quizzes will be displayed. 

a. Quizzes labeled with “Required” require students to use RLB. 

b. Quizzes labeled with “Not Required” do not require RLB.  

 

4. To change the settings, select Modify Settings from the context menu to the left of the 

quiz title.  

 

5. Select Require LockDown Browser for this exam. Additionally, you may choose to 

require RLB to view quiz feedback and results. Optionally, you may create a password 

that students must enter to start the exam.  

 

6. Several Advanced Settings are also available. For additional information, select the 

[explain] link that follows each setting. 

 

7. Click Save and Close to apply the settings.  

 

 

 

8. For additional security, you may turn on Respondus Monitor. Respondus Monitor is an 

add‐on feature that enables students to use a webcam to record themselves during the 

quiz. Select the items to include in the Startup Sequence, which contains the steps a 

student must complete prior to the start of a quiz. Most settings are optional and can be 

reordered by dragging and dropping them into the desired order.
