THE DANGEROUSLY LOW LEVEL OF THE MANHATTAN WATERFRONT, COMBINED WITH THE STORM PRONE AREA AND FUTURE SEA LEVEL RISE CALLS FOR A FORM OF FLOOD PROTECTION. A LEVEE IS THE
MOST EFFECTIVE, STRAIGHT TO THE POINT, METHOD OF FLOOD PROTECTION.

DREDGING AND LANDFILL
ALMERE IS A CITY IN THE NETHERLANDS, NEAR AMSTERDAM, THAT IS ENTIRELY MAN MADE THROUGH THE USE OF DREDGING. WE LOOKED TO ALMERE FOR THE UNDERSTANDING OF THE CONTRUCTION PROCESS AND THE FEASABILITY AT OUR SCALE. THESE PHOTOS SHOW THE SCALE OF THE ALMERE
PROJECT VERSUS OUR LOWER MANHATTAN SITE.
THE ENTIRE REGION IS ESSENTIALLY A POLDER. A POLDER IS A PIECE OF LAND THAT HAS BEEN CLOSED OFF BY DIKES OR LEVEES. THE FIRST STEP IS TO BARRIER OFF THE AREA OF WATER WITH THE DIKES OR LEVEES TO THE POINT WHERE ALL NATURAL CONNECTION WITH THE ATTACHED BODY OF WATER IS BLOCKED OFF. THE AREA IS THEN DRAINED, PARTIALLY THROUGH THE USE OF LOW TIDES
AND FLOOD GATES. THE SURROUNDING SEA BODY IS DREDGED AND THE RESULTING TILL WAS USED TO FILL IN THE DRAINED AREAS.
