A generalist species is able to thrive in a wide variety of environmental conditions and can make use of a variety of different resources – has a varied diet.

A specialist species can only thrive in a narrow range of environmental conditions – has a very limited diet.

Human Teeth

Two sets: 1. Primary or deciduous (baby teeth/milk teeth) 2. Permanent (32 total) (third molars = wisdom teeth)

Teeth are classified according to shape and function

There are four main types of teeth: 1.  Incisors 2.  Canines 3.  Premolars 4.  Molars

Incisor

Canine (eyetooth)

Premolar

Molar

Incisors ! These are chisel-shaped cutting

teeth, used for biting or chopping off pieces of food.

Canines ! These are long and cone shaped - sharp teeth

that are used to pierce, hold and tear food.

food.

Molars ! These teeth have broad crowns (with 4-5 rounded

cusps) – used for chewing and grinding hard food.

Activity: Inspect the animal sculls available and answer the following questions in the table provided:

1. Note the types of teeth you observe - incisors, canines, premolars and molars. 2. Describe what they look like - their shape (use the table above to help you with the description).3. Describe the tooth function - keep in mind this is your opinion (use the table above to help you).4. Based on your !ndings, predict the type of diet this animal has and explain why you think so in the conclusion section of the table.5. Use your knowledge to predict what animal it is from the list provided, explain your reasoning.

Case study No. Animal: Diet:Type of tooth Tooth shape Tooth function

Conclusion:

Human Omnivore

I think this animal is an omnivore because the scull/jaw has four types of teeth which I think are versatile and suitable for biting, chewing and grinding which allows eating a variety of foods. I think this this is a human scull and teeth.
