Respiratory diseases are a diverse group of conditions that affect millions of Australians and are responsible for approximately 20% of general practice encounters.

Chronic respiratory disease has a significant impact on the mental and physical wellbeing of patients, reducing productivity and disrupting lives.

The two most common chronic respiratory diseases in Australia are COPD and asthma (the prevalence of which is amongst the highest in the world). Other conditions such as interstitial lung disease can have serious consequences, while others are easier to manage and prevent.

It is important for GPs to recognise the risk factors, causes and clinical features of the various forms of respiratory disease, as many of them are preventable and easily managed within general practice.

GPs should aim to improve lung health through prevention and early detection of respiratory disease, so as to reduce the impact and burden of disease on the individual and the community.

This Active Learning Module (ALM) has been designed to enhance participant’s knowledge, skills and confidence in diagnosing and treating respiratory disease, thus optimising patient outcomes.
