Thank you for your interest in geographic information systems (GIS) and the Student Edition of the Esri premier software, ArcGIS Desktop. This software is made available to all Murray State University faculty, staff, and students through a license fee paid by the Mapping Applications and Resource Center (MARC), Murray State University.
The ArcGIS Desktop Student Edition provides complete access to the core software plus a number of extensions. The Student Edition is time-limited to 365 days from the time the software is installed. Once the time limit has expired the student may request another license, and potentially, a software update. The offer is only available to current Murray State students, staff, and faculty.
Esri requires students to create an “Esri Global Account.” If this is your first experience with Esri, chances are you do not have a global account. This global account will help you manage your software downloads, licensing, and provide a method for managing any Esri E-Learning courses you might take. To access to ArcGIS for Desktop please follow these steps.
1. Request an Esri Global Account and ArcGIS Evaluation Code (“EVA”). a. Students enrolled in Earth and Environmental Sciences courses will have this
request made on their behalf by their instructor. b. Non-Earth and Environmental Sciences students may email c. [email protected] and request an Esri account. d. Students will receive an email from Esri with sign-in instructions to access their
Esri Global Account and dashboard. 2. Register the EVA code using your Esri Global Account.
a. Sign-in to your Esri Global Account. b. Use the following URL: https://www.Esri.com/en-us/arcgis/products/arcgis-
desktop-student-trial 3. Enter your EVA code to authorize your software. 4. Download the software you requested. Codes are specific to the software requested. 5. Download any other software, such as the uninstall utility, or the tutorial data. 6. Install ArcGIS Desktop (instructions included below) 7. License ArcGIS software online (last part of the installation process) 8. Service packs & patches may be necessary. These can be downloaded from your Esri
Global Account dashboard.

In most cases, the most recent software version is what you will want. In the example above, the most recent software version is listed on the top row, first option from the left, “ArcGIS Pro 2.4, ArcGIS 10.7.1.”
The following figure illustrates the screen for the download and installation instructions for ArcGIS 10.7.1 Desktop. Please be advised Esri can and does alter web page content and URLs without notice. Be adaptable to changing situations.
ArcGIS Desktop requires a few prerequisites, such as the Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5 & 3.5 service pack 1.
Before installing ArcGIS Desktop please ensure your computer’s operating system has been updated with all critical updates and patches. Once the computer has been fully updated and patched, the final recommendation is to temporarily disable any antivirus software during the installation process.
For details on how to install Microsoft .NET Framework, google “windows 10 .net framework installation.”

Before you install ArcGIS Desktop:
The sample installation described occurred on a Windows 10 desktop computer. While installations using other version of Windows should proceed the same, slight variations might occur.
ArcGIS for Desktop Student Edition is a single-seat license, meaning the software can be installed on only one computer.
Make sure your computer is connected to the Internet before installing. The software needs an active Internet connection in order to license the software prior to use.
ArcGIS 10.x Service Packs are available. The Service Pack can be downloaded from within the Esri Global Account dashboard and installed after the primary software is installed. Consult notes at the end of this document for brief instructions.
Installation of Service Packs is very easy. Simply download, double-click to initiate the installation, and click Finish to complete. Rarely is a Service Pack installation more complicated than that.
Create a folder on the C:\ drive of the desktop or laptop to be used to store the download files, e.g. C:\staging. Creating a unique download folder will help locate files later.
Pay attention to the file names being downloaded, as the names resemble the software product but are not identical in name.
Download the following software:
1. ArcGIS Desktop (ArcMap) *install this application first 2. ArcGIS Coordinate Systems Data 3. ArcGIS Data Interoperability for Desktop (ArcMAP)
You may also elect to download ArcGIS Pro at this time, as well.
1. ArcGIS Pro 2. ArcGIS Pro Offline Help 3. ArcGIS Data Interoperability for Pro 4. ArcGIS Coordinate System Data for ArcGIS Pro Per User Install
Install the software products in the order listed above.

Once the software has been authorized and downloaded, we can proceed with installation.
As depicted below, ArcGIS Desktop files have been downloaded into C:\staging awaiting installation.
Notice in the graphic above, file extensions are visible, time and date, and the approximate file size are listed. In GIS, having file extensions and file sizes viewable is a good practice.
Install ArcGIS Desktop
Begin the installation of ArcGIS Desktop by double-clicking the ArcGIS_Desktop_.exe executable. The number after “Desktop” will vary, depending on the version being installed.
Upon launch, ArcGIS Desktop will look for a folder to unpack the files necessary.

In case a re-install is necessary, the install files for ArcGIS Desktop are located within this folder.
When the files are successfully unpacked, leave the “Launch the setup program” box checked and Close the application.
After a few moments, you will be prompted to allow ArcGIS Desktop to make changes to your computer and install. You should agree to this.
After a few moments, you will have a few setup screens to click through:

Installing ArcGIS Desktop 10.X. Go have lunch or get coffee; this is going to take a while.
Installation can take from a few minutes to several minutes (>20 minutes). If you have arrived at this screen, Congratulations; ArcGIS has been installed. Now, the software must be licensed.

The ArcGIS Desktop Administration Wizard should automatically launch, providing us a way to license our software.
We need to select a product. But, in order to select a product, we need to understand the difference between a “Concurrent Use” license and a “Single Use” license.
P a g e | 15
8/2020
Concurrent Use means our computer (“client”) is running on a network and will communicate with another computer (“server”) on the same network in order to obtain a license.
Single Use means our computer is a stand-alone computer, requiring an activation code, and a one-time network communication with Esri to validate our activation code. This is us.
Select a Product
The EVA code you were granted is for “Advanced (ArcInfo) Single Use” and will expire 365 days after activated. Click the “Advanced (ArcInfo) Single Use” option.
Launch the Authorization Wizard for Single Use products
Authorization Options
The “Authorize Now” button is active so click.
The software has already been installed; ArcGIS simply needs to be authorized. The top option is fine. Next >

Authorization Method
The desktop or laptop ArcGIS Desktop was installed upon needs to have a network connection in order to authorize the EVA code, so make sure the computer is wired to the internet or attached to WIFI. After authorization, a network connection is not required.
“Authorize with Esri now using the Internet.” Next >
Authorization Information
All of the fields with an asterisk (“*”) need to be completed to move on to the next level.

Evaluate Software Extensions
We see this screen again as we are using the full, enterprise version of ArcGIS Desktop, not a limited use or pared-down version given to higher education. We are seeing the same screens as a corporate, business, or private user who bought the software.
We can ignore this screen. Next >

Authorizing Software
If all goes according to plan, the authorization will take place and require only a few seconds, less than one minute (depending on the speed of the network connection).
Congratulations, ArcGIS is now installed, licensed, and authorized. Now, install the other two packages and you are good-to-go.

ArcGIS Administrator Desktop Availability
The ArcGIS Administrator Desktop Availability shows software package, the version, if the package is installed, authorization state, and date the software license expires.
Borrow/Return: This option is not available for stand-alone, Single Use licenses.
Support Operations: If, for some reason, a software extension or software feature is not necessary, the feature can be deauthorized.
Data Licenses: Most Esri products require a license to use, and some data products, like those for Business Analyst or Community Analyst, require a separate license.
To complete the entire installation procedure, click OK.

Service Packs
As the Student Edition is a fully-functional software package, downloading Service Packs is routinely necessary to fix or enhance software functions. Make sure to visit www.Esri.com Support pages occasionally for downloads.
Troubleshooting & Help
The ArcGIS for Desktop Student Edition does not come with technical support. However, Esri has an abundant amount of free help available to address a wide array of issues and concerns.
Esri User Forums
User forums are a good way to discover information of technical issues, or to figure out ways to use the software in addressing a particular research problem.
Chances are, someone has already experienced a dilemma and has documented a solution. Perform a google search, either formed as a specific question, e.g. “how do I create a buffer in ArcGIS 10.1” or simply by using search terms, like “watershed delineation ArcGIS 10.2”.
YouTube
Esri has a YouTube channel, EsriTV. EsriTV has hundreds of videos demonstrating technology, from fundamental “how-to” tasks, to more sophisticated analysis, and topical videos on geospatial technology.
