I was four years old when my family got ourfirst television set. It was the only TV on our blockand my dad had carefully planned its delivery to

coincide with the biggest happening since the enof World War II, so most of our neighbors joinedus for the very first broadcast we watched on ournew setthe coronation of Elizabeth II, Queen othe United Kingdom, on June 2, 1953. Never minthat the picture was in black and white and a bitscratchy, the grown-ups all marveled at the technogy that made it possible for us to see a spectactaking place that very moment on the other side the world. I dont suppose that many of them und

stood that technology any better than I did, but tdidnt matter. It worked.

That might seem like a strange anecdote tobegin this issue on Heaven and the spirit world,but the point is this: Like the TV, we dont have tounderstand everything about the spirit world toknow its real or receive its benefits. For people tsay they dont believe in the spirit world becausetheyve never been there or dont understandit would be like saying they dont believe in TVbecause theyve never seen one. Just because

theyve never seen it doesnt make it not so.It took some very smart people to discover rad

waves and learn how to use them to bring us firsthe radio and then TV, but now we can all benefitGod also made a way for us to connect with the

spirit world, so we can all benefit. Its called prayOnce we learn to connect, many amazing thin

are possible: We can have a personal, intimate relationship with Jesus; we can get very real help wour problems; we can even catch glimpses of theworld beyond our physical plane. The benefits arendlessall put there by our loving heavenly Fatfor us to discover, use, and enjoy.

I HAD NEVER MET ANYONE WHO HAD EXPE-

RIENCED LIFE AFTER DEATH until that day atTiranas Central Hospital. Some coworkersfrom The Family and I were visiting peoplein their rooms when we met a man whodidnt seem to be very sick. He invited usin and we gave him the tract True Love,Forever Love. He said that he and his family

were Muslim, though he himself did not goto any mosque. Nevertheless, he believed inspiritual things, and he believed in Jesus.

He didnt know anything about Jesus,really. He had never seen a movie about His

life or read the Bible, but he had had a per-sonal experience that convinced him thatJesus was who He saidHe was.

It was two yearsago, he said. At theage of 58, I had somehealth problems. Thenone day I had a heartattack. I was brought tothe hospital in a coma.

As the doctors wereworking on me, myheart stopped beatingfor 11 seconds.

I dont rememberanything else, exceptsuddenly seeing abeautiful place I hadnever seen before. It

was amazing! I did

not know I was expe-riencing a clinicaldeath, because every-thing seemed so real.The place was full oflightmore than anyplace Ive seen hereon earth. There wererivers, streams, trees,

and a lot of green. I didnt know where I was,but I felt wonderful.

To my astonishment, I saw Jesus there anI recognized Him from pictures I had seen oearth. But believe me, He was much more reand alive. I was on my knees, holding on toHim, and I said to Him, Even though Im anold man, I can still serve You. Please take me

with You now! But He gently said, No, youhave to live.

I was still begging Him to take me whensuddenly I was revived, brought back to life.

As the old man told this story, he was trem

bling and his eyes filled with tears. He said hhad told this experience to his sons and othe

members of his family, bthey hadnt believed himI dont care if they belieme or not, he said. Ihave met Jesus. I am surof that!

We explained to himmore about Jesus, Hislove, and His plan of sal

vation. You can not onlbelieve in Jesus, we toldhim, but you can haveHis presence in your heaalways. He wants to be apart of your life.

Then the man prayedwith us to receive Jesus ahis Savior. When his daycomes, Jesus will welcom

him back to Heaven andhe will get his wishtoserve and stay with Jesuforever.

Those experiences of life afterdeath that some have had are

exceptional cases, of course, andits obvious that most peopledo notcome back after passingon. However, when your timecomes, death is not something

you should fear.Contrary to the idea some

people seem to have, God isnot a cruel tyrant or some sortof monster who is trying tofrighten everyone into Hell,

but rather a loving and merci-ful Father who is trying to loveeveryone into Heaven. God islove (1 John 4:8), and He wantsto help and save you and make

you happy with His love. In fact,this is why He created you: tolove and enjoy Him forever, nowand in the life to come.

But sad to say, at some timeor other weve all been selfish,mean, unloving, or unkind tootherseven to God! For allhave sinned and fall short of theglory of God (Romans 3:23).None of us deserve to go toHeaven. But the Bible says thatalthough the wages of sin isdeath, the gift of God is eternallife in Jesus Christ, our Lord(Romans 6:23).

Receiving Gods free gift ofeternal life is like receiving apardon from the guilt of sin.God loves you so much, He gaJesus to die in your place, to ta

your punishment for you (Joh3:16). This is why Jesus couldpromise those who believe inHim that they shall not taste

death (Matthew 16:28). If wereceive Jesus and His free gift eternal life, our spiritsthe reuswill never die or experienthe agony of separation fromGod, even when our physicalbodies die. He who hears My

word and believes in Him whosent Me has everlasting life, anshall not come into judgment

HOSPITAL I VISIT HAS JUST DIED. I knowI should be happy that one more childhas passed on to Heaven, finally ending

her suffering, but still, seven-year-oldBeverly was one of my favorites. Shenever seemed very sick, really. She hada full head of hair and wasnt as thinas the others. How I took it for grantedthat every Thursday at 10:00 A.M., Bev-erly would be there in the playroom,

waiting for our art class to begin.She wasnt there today, and she

never will be again.They kept on telling me that. Dont

get attached to the kids. You cant getattached to the kids. But I shruggedit off, thinking I could take it. I under-stood that their lives hung by a thread,and I could deal with it when thethread unraveled. Other volunteersbefore me had dropped out becausekids theyd grown to love had died. It

was all too much for them. But I wasstrong. I wouldnt be so affected.

IT HAPPENED TO ME

An Angel Named Beverly

And yet, here I am, crying my eyesout.

Perhaps Beverly was an angel, toogood for this world, so she was givenher wings before the rest of us. Sheseemed untouched by the evils of th

world and was too innocent to knowthe pain that loved ones leave in the

wake when they pass on.

It doesnt seem to make sense. Nofor Beverly, and not for the others

whose lives will be cut shortthou-sands, hundreds of thousands,millions. Am I wasting my time byinvesting in these little souls who wiexperience so little more of life? If thexistence is so short-term, then is itright for me to love them as thoughthey will live forever?

Asking myself these questions ledto a surprising answer: Because theifutures are so unpredictable, every dcounts. Every second counts. The qution is not a matter of whether they wlive or die, but rather if I will live to lothem.

There is no glory in this job. I knowit will bring more pain each time I wness another young life slipping awaIt is inevitable that I will again becom

attached, only to lose someone verydear to my heart.

There is no glory, but there is comfort. It is the comfort of knowing thaI can be a touch of love in the heartsothers who will take a remembrancethat love with thembe they here onearth or in the next worldthen I hadone what matters most.

Beverly had lived for seven years. may live seventy more. I dont know.Nobody knows. Death can take anyoby surprise. But whatever happens a

whatever I see when I get to Heaventhere is one face that will not surprisme. Standing there at the reception,

waiting to welcome me to a placewhere there will be no more sufferinor crying or death, will be the beautiful face of an angelan angel nameBeverly.

The question is

not a matter of

whether they willlive or die, but

rather if I will live

to love them.

Answers to your question

A: You are absolutely right about sal-vation being a gift of God as a result offaith. Forgiveness of sin and entrance to

Heaven in the afterlife are automatic themoment we confess our sin and receiveJesus as our personal Savior. There aremany Scriptures that make this clear.

However, the Bible also makes itclear that the saved will also receiverewards in Heaven over and above

forgiveness and eternal life, and that thelevel of reward will be based on theirworks:

The Son of Man will come in theglory of His Father with His angels, andthen He will reward each according tohis works (Matthew 16:27).

He who plants and he who waters

are one, and each one will receive hisown reward according to his own labor(1 Corinthians 3:8).

Behold, I am coming quickly, andMy reward is with Me, to give to everyone according to his work (Revelation22:12).

God shows no partiality regardingsalvation (Acts 10:34). He is completelyunbiased regarding peoples earthlydeeds when it comes to salvation, butwhen it comes to their workstheircontribution to His kingdom by sharing

His love with othersHe is definitelypartial. In addition to the parable of th

talents (Matthew 25:1430), the following Scriptures also indicate that therea reward system in Heaven:

No other foundation can anyone lthan that which is laid, which is JesusChrist. Now if anyone builds on thisfoundation with gold, silver, preciousstones, wood, hay, straw, each ones

work will become clear; for the Day wdeclare it, because it will be revealedby fire; and the fire will test each onework, of what sort it is. If anyones wowhich he has built on it endures, hewill receive a reward (1 Corinthians3:1114).

Q: Ive read in some publicationsby The Family that in the afterlifepeople will be rewarded for goodworks they did in this life. However,the Bible says in Ephesians 2:89

and elsewhere that we are savedby faith, not by works. So shouldntwe also be rewarded for faith, rathe

than works? If we are faithful to Godand His Word, works will follow, butit seems works should not be thedeciding factor concerning rewardsin Heaven. Can you clarify this forme?

A LOT OF PEOPLE TODAYARE WAKING UP to the fact thatthe spirit world is real, that thereis something beyond our four-dimensional world of height,breadth, depth, and time. Manysincere seekers are looking forthe truth and true spirituality,but sadly many of the people

they turn to for enlightenmentare in the dark themselves. So intheir quest for spiritual reality,many of these seekers begin tolook elsewhere for a means toconnect with the spirit world.

Little do most of these peoplerealize what theyre getting into.There are two sides to the spirit

world, good and evil, and very

powerful forces are at workthere, so anyone who venturesinto the spirit world without theLords guidance and protectionis playing with fire! Thats whyso many people flip out whenthey dabble in the occult or takehallucinogenic drugs. They get aglimpse into the dark side of thespirit world but arent preparedfor or protected from what they

see.The same goes for some

scientists and others who studythe paranormalESP, telepathiccommunication, hypnosis,and so on. What most of thesepeople who delve into the para-normal dont realize is that theyare dealing with spiritual forcesthat operate in the spiritualrealm.

A number of popular moviesin recent years have alsorekindled peoples interest inthe spirit world. Unfortunately,most of these movies have dwelton the dark sidethe horror ofthe Devil and his dirty workand these are not all figmentsof some screenwriters imagina-tion, either. Demons are very

real and active today, as theyhave been in all ages.

The spiritual warfare

As the apostle Paul explained,our battle is not against fleshand blood, but against ... therulers of the darkness of this

world, against spiritual wicked-

ness in high places (Ephesians6:12 KJV). Our daily lives, events,and ultimately the worlds futureare being influenced by battlesin the spirit world between Godand His angels on the one hand,and the Devil and his demonson the other. Whats happeningon the surface is only a physicalmanifestation of the real action.

The real action is in the spiritworld.Many people today are

plagued by demons and needdeliverance, but they eitherdont understand that theirproblems are spiritual, or theydont know how to avail them-selves of the Lords help. Forexample, most doctors and psy-chiatrists diagnose such things

as schizophrenia as purelypsychological or physiologicalproblems and try to counterthem with drugs, when actuallythe cause is often spiritual.

We also play an importantpart in the spiritual warfarebecause we can help deter-mine the outcome through ourchoices and prayers. We canexercise authority over all thedemons of Hell and the Devilhimself through the power Jesuspromised His followers (Luke10:19). In the case of a personbeing troubled mentally oremotionally by evil spirits, forexample, we can command thatspirit to leave and stop influenc-ing the person they are afflict-ing.

The dark side

What about devil worshipdemonism, black magic,and the like? Can people usspiritual powers to influ-ence or cast spells on otherpeople? Well, just as God haHis means of communicatiin the spirit world, so does

the imitator, the Devil. Justas God has His children, theDevil has his captives. Godcan possess His children, anthe Devil can possess his.

God has seen fit to allowthe Devil some power andcontrol in the spiritual realm

within limits. Black magic,demonism, and so on are

real, and those who practicthem can wield real power.Just as Gods people can prato the Lord and ask Him toaffect people and situationsfor good, so can the Devilspeople communicate withhim and curse others.

God has given the Devilcertain powers, particularlyover his own peoplethose

who have rejected Christ antherefore arent protected bthe Spirit of God. The Lordgives everyone a degreeof immunity or mercifulprotection from the Devilsinfluence up to the point ofdecision, when they musteither accept or reject Jesusbut those who choose toreject leave themselves widopen for the Devils lies (2Thessalonians 2:1011).

and the Holy Spirit, as well asmany other good spirits. Theseinclude the seven spirits of Godof Revelation 4:5, the sevenstars or angels or spirits of theseven churches of Revelation1:20, the four spirits of theheavens of Zechariah 6:5, andthe multitudes of other celestial

messengers, angels, or spirits ofGod mentioned in the Bible, as

well as the spirits of all the mil-lions of departed saintsall of

whom are obviouslygoodspirits.The apostle Paul referred

to these heavenly hosts as agreat cloud of witnesses thatsurrounds us here and now(Hebrews 12:1). Like a cloud is

composed of millions of tinyparticles of moisture, this cloudis composed of millions of goodspirits.

In another place Paul asksrhetorically, Are they not allministering spirits sent forthto minister for those who willinherit salvation? (Hebrews1:14). So they are not only

watching us, they are watch-

ing over us, protecting us, andtrying to influence us for good.

All throughout the Bible thereare many promises of spiritualprotection, such as, The angelof the Lord encamps all aroundthose who fear Him, and deliv-ers them (Psalm 34:7), and,He shall give His angels chargeover you, to keep you in all your

ways (Psalm 91:11).

Knowing whos who

How do we tell the differencebetween Gods good spiritualforces and the Devils evil spir-its?The Bible tells us to testthe spirits, whether they are ofGod (1 John 4:1). The differ-ence is usually quite clear: Godspower is creative and loving; the

Devils power is destructive andhateful. Gods Spirit ministerslove, joy, peace, longsuffering,kindness, goodness, faithful-ness, gentleness, and self-con-trolall good things (Galatians5:2223). The Devil and his evilspirits minister fear, hatred,bitterness, strife, misery, con-

fusion, and tormentall badthings.

The same goes for thethoughts that form our atti-tudes and direct our actions.If a thought is not accordingto Gods Word or causes us tobe unloving, discontent, bitter,dissatisfied, or critical of others,that thought is not from the

Lord but from the enemy of oursouls, the Devil.

Our best protection

The Lord protects His own.Jesus said, My sheep hear Myvoice, and I know them, andthey follow Me. And I give themeternal life, and they shall neverperish; neither shall anyonesnatch them out of My hand

(John 10:2728). Once wereceive Jesus as our Savior, weare His property and the Devilcant get us back.

We can still get ourselvesinto a lot of trouble, however, if

we stray from the Lords pro-tection by being careless andunprayerful, willfully disobey-ing His Word, or not heedingHis warnings. So be obedientto Gods laws of love, and dontgive the Devil any place in yourlife (Ephesians 4:27). Submit toGod. Resist the Devil and he willflee from you (James 4:7).

We who know and love theLord dont have to fear theDevil, because we have a greaterpower that protects us. He whois in you is greater than he who

is in the world (1 John 4:4).In other words, God is sayingMy power in you is greaterthan the Devils power in hispeoplemuch greater! TheLords protection is like a forcfield around us, which the Deand his forces cannot penetra

whereas Gods power is like li

that penetrates and destroys Devils darkness. Darkness caexist in the presence of light.

The Devil cant touch us if ware the Lords and in His will.

Even though the Bible hasso much to say about the spir

world and the spiritual war-fare, some Christians choose

to ignore it or act like it doesnexist. They are afraid of the su

ject because they feel it bordeon spiritism and that talkingabout appearances of angelsor departed saints sounds toomuch like having to do withfamiliar spiritsevil spiritsand devilswhich Gods Worclearly condemns.

But this does not mean thawe are supposed to ignore orshut ourselves off completelyto the realities of the spiritual

world in which God Himselfdwells with His Son Jesus, theHoly Spirit, all His ministerinspirits, the angels, as well asthe spirits of all the millions odeparted saints. We shouldntcondemn the entire spirit wo

just because the Devilalso dwells and operatesthere. That would be likerefusing to listen to anymusic just because theDevil uses music. If westopped using everythingthe Devil uses, there

wouldnt be much left for

God and us to use for Hisgood purposes!

We dont have to waittill we die to get a glimpseof the world to come. Asit is written, Eye has notseen, nor ear heard, norhave entered into theheart of man the things

which God has prepared

for those who love Him.But God has revealedthem to us through HisSpirit. For the Spiritsearches all things, yes,the deep things of God(1 Corinthians 2:910).God wants to awakenus to the realities of thespirit world so we canenjoy the good, avail

ourselves of the help Hehas put there for us, andmore effectively combatthe evil.

If you have receivedJesus into your heartand have thereby beenborn again of the Spirit(John 3:5), you can safelyexplore the wonders ofGods good spirit world.

You dont need to fear orworry about demons oreven Satan himself! God,His loving Holy Spirit,and His hosts of mightyangels are with you,surrounding, protect-ing, and delivering youfrom all evil (Psalm 34:7;91:1013).

I WAS A TEENAGER THE FIRST TIME I SAW MY GUARDIAN ANGEL. I washeading across the street for some dive in San Francisco when suddehe was right there on the curb in front of me, challenging me. He wastall, handsome, and blonde, with a real fine face, but dressed in an oldbums clothes and a slouch hat. He looked fiercely into my eyes, witheyes that glowed like fire, and I knew he wasnt going to budge an inc

out of my way. He spoke to my mind, not with words but with his eyes thoughts, and I heard him loud and clear, inside my head, as he lookeat me with great disgust. Where do you think you are going? He knewhere I was headed, and he was there to stop meand stop me he dI wasnt three feet from him, face to face, and he nearly scared me outof my wits! I nearly did a backward flip and ran the other way across thbusy street, dodging cars. Its a wonder I didnt get killed. And I grabbthe first train home. I couldnt get out of there fast enough. I was terrifie

of him because somehow I knew exactly who he wasan angel of Goin disguise, sent by the Lord to stop me from making a big mistake. Itsure did the trick, and I never forgot it! So thank God for His angels, ware watching over us continuallyeven your personal angel, whose jois you.

SINCE THE BEGINNING OF TIME,people have speculated, theorized, andfantasized about what it would be likeand where their spirit would go whenthey die. Speculate, theorize, and fan-tasize no more! Gods Word, the Bible,answers those questions very clearlyand specifically.

And the gates! Can you imagine the

gates for such a city, whose wall is 65meters high? They would be gigan-

ticpearls such as this world has neverseen!

And the nations of those who aresaved shall walk in its light, and thekings of the earth bring their glory andhonor into it.

Inside the great heavenly city iswhere all of Gods saved children willbe free to live with Him forever. Out-side the city there will be multitudes ofpreviously unsaved people who have

been raised from the dead, have stoodbefore Gods great judgment throne,and have been allowed by Him to liveon the beautifully remade Garden-of-Eden-like earth (Revelation 21:2426).

PRAISE BRINGS HEAVEN CLOSER

Praise is very important in Heaven because inHeaven, everyone is praiseful all the time. Its partof being there. And when you praise the Lord,

it takes you there in the spirit and you partakeof that praiseful atmosphere. Enter into Hisgates with thanksgiving, and into His courts withpraise (Psalm 100:4).

Praise is one of the greatest powers of Heaven.When you praise the Lord, you open yourself tothe healing balm of Heaven and it clears yourmind, relieves stress, and refreshes your spirit.Strength and power lie in praisenot only power

that lifts your spirit, but power to draw morepower from the heavenly realm. Praise opens achannel to the heavenlies that allows the heav-enly blessings to pour down. You dont just prai

your way to victory, you also praise down theblessings of God.

Praise is a form of love. Its you telling the Lohow much you love Him and how thankful youare for all He does for you. As you praise and loHim, He loves you in return and pours His blesings on you. So sing those praises, pray thosepraises, pour forth those praises to the Lord. Thblessings come down as the praises go up!
