Age of Exploration and Discovery

!  Late 1400’s -1500’s was the greatest period of overseas exploration in the history of the world

!  Portugal, Spain, England, and France emerged as great empires. They began competing with each other for the rich resources and markets of foreign lands.

!  In addition, church leaders wanted to bring Christianity to peoples foreign lands. Many explorers were more interested in converting people to Christianity than in finding gold, silver, and spices.

I CAN explain the reasons for European exploration and colonization.

3 main Causes for Exploration: 1. Natural Resources 2. Market for Goods 3. Religion

Causes of Exploration

+

Causes of European Exploration: Natural Resources

Natural Resources – The Portuguese wanted to find a route around Africa to the Indian Ocean. They very much enjoyed the spices and silks from China and India, but they were expensive to purchase, so they decided to locate another route to bring down the cost. What were these spices? Nutmeg, cloves, peppercorn, cinnamon and mace.

I CAN explain the reasons for European exploration and colonization.

+

Causes of European Exploration: Market for Goods

The Portuguese were excited at the thought that they would be able to get these fancy silks and yummy spices for a better price, but they were also thinking about $$. They could get the goods for a lower price, and make money as traders.

I CAN explain the reasons for European exploration and colonization.

+

Causes of European Exploration: Religion

Portuguese explorers wanted to spread their religion along the coasts of Africa.

I CAN explain the reasons for European exploration and colonization.

+The Reformation •  Religious movement in the

16th century that began as an attempt to reform the Roman Catholic Church, but resulted in the founding of Protestant churches.

•  This movement was led by – Martin Luther – a German religious leader – which led to a new form of Christianity called Protestantism.

•  Dominated most of northern Europe.

I CAN explain the reasons for European exploration and colonization.

+Prince Henry the Navigator

"  He established the Portuguese naval academics for the study of astronomy, geography, and navigation.

"  Fought in a battle that helped capture Ceuta, a city on the coast of North Africa – an important thing for Portugal in the way of exploring Africa.

"  He tried unsuccessfully to make $$ trading in gold

"  Then he tried creating sugar cane farms. He made a plantation off the coast of Madeira. Farming sugar is hard work and he imported slaves from Africa to work in the fields. It was at one time the largest producer of sugar in the Western world.

+The Crusades

"  The Crusades were military expeditions directed by Popes to capture the Holy Land from Muslim Turks. They were unsuccessful, but helped the Europeans with cartography and shipbuilding.

"  It also helped expose the Europeans to desirable things of the East. The crusades helped expand the empires of Portugal, Spain, England, and France I CAN explain the reasons for

European exploration and colonization.

What is a

POPE?

Empires: Portugal

#  Portugal – earliest of the modern European colonial empires. Lasted for centuries.

#  Bartholomeu Dias (navigator) discovered the Cape of Good Hope on the southern tip of Africa.

#  Vasco de Gama later sailed around the Cape, and continued on to India.

#  Portuguese sailors continued to explore East Asia’s coasts over the following decades.

#  Portugal grew wealthy from the trade routes that were created. Brazil was the most profitable colony in South America.

I CAN explain the reasons for European exploration and colonization.

+

Empires: Spain #  Other explores from Spain, France, and England

searched for a route through or around North America and South America. They hoped to find a route to the East.

#  In the late 1490’s Columbus was in the mission to find a passage across the Atlantic to Asia.

#  He thought he found Asia but really – he found the Bahamas☺.

#  Later, it was learned that he discovered entire continents that were not known to the Europeans (New World) – Colonizing these areas made Spain very rich

I CAN explain the reasons for European exploration and colonization.

+

Empires: France #  From the 1600’s – 1900’s,

France was a dominant empire. They possessed colonies around the world.

#  When Napoleon was in power – France controlled most of Europe.

#  The French established control over islands in the Indian Ocean, Caribbean, South Pacific, North Pacific, and North Atlantic.

#  Only the British empire was larger than France during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

I CAN explain the reasons for European exploration and colonization.

+

Empires: England •  The British empire was the largest in history. •  At its peak, GB controlled Canada, Australia, India & much of

eastern Africa as well as other islands around the world. •  It was said “The sun never sets on the British Empire” – what does

that mean? •  North America came under the control of England & France

during the 18th century. •  Great Britain beat out the Dutch, France, & Spain for control of

North America. •  Great Britain lost its American colonies – (do you know when?)

But controlled Canada until the twentieth century.

I CAN explain the reasons for European exploration and colonization.
