WELCOME! Aviation Career Services (ACS) and
the DuPage Airport Authority (DAA) have come
together to deliver and host the first ACS Leadership
Workshop for our industry. It’s an exciting time
for ACS and our host airport DAA, as we work together to respond to the
industry’s needs; developing our future leaders.
Our industry is currently going through a time of staff change
and leadership attrition. With these changes come loss of institutional
knowledge, loss of proven leadership and the loss of commonly accepted
leadership practices. Understanding the importance of replenishing our
leadership pipeline with a rich and proven curriculum, we are offering a
leadership workshop delivered by professionals with extensive experience
in adult education and development as well as airport and aviation industry
practical experience.
As we close, we’d like to thank each of you for taking an interest in
the ACS Leadership Workshop. As industry leaders in various capacities,
you have the opportunity to help us offer a solid developmental opportunity
for our industry’s future. You are truly our greatest asset today and tomorrow
and we could not accomplish talent management and development without
your support and leadership. We look forward to having you and/or your
team participate in this fundamental industry leadership workshop.
The DuPage Airport Authority (DAA) is one of the premier
aviation facilities in the country, consisting of a diverse array
of business units including the DuPage Flight Center, Prairie
Landing Golf Club and the DuPage Business Center – a 600 acre
business park. The DAA has just completed the construction
of a 31,000 sq. ft. hangar to service transient aircraft, adding
to its inventory of more than 500,000 sq. ft. of hangar space
ranging from small t-hangars to high-tail hangars capable of
accommodating multiple large cabin business aircraft. The
DuPage Flight Center is an award-winning FBO that has hosted
numerous Nation Business Aviation Association events, the
American and European teams for the 2012 Ryder Cup and is generally acknowledged to have among the best facilities for the general
aviation user. A 24-hour air traffic control tower, 24/7 aircraft rescue and firefighting, U.S. Customs and a state-of- the-art security and
video surveillance system are some of the resources available. The aviation and non-aviation components of the DAA are an important
role in the regional economic development efforts, making it an interesting organization to study from an airport industry perspective.
Next door, Geneva is a growing suburb with a hometown appeal, where residents take active roles in the community. First
settled in the 1830’s, Geneva showcases its historic roots with shady streets lined with
century-old homes and commercial buildings while accommodating the needs of its citizens
with the continued development of residential communities, retail centers and industrial
parks. As Geneva’s population grows beyond 20,000, the city stands ready to cater to
the demands of a growing residential community and commercial base, providing up-to-
date services, improved roadways and beautifully maintained streets and parks. Geneva’s
charming shopping district, established neighborhoods, award-winning school district, a myriad of recreational opportunities and a river
running through it are just a few of the elements that attract residents, businesses and visitors to this unique town.
St. Charles is located minutes from the DAA offering a quality community with international employers, innovative schools,
beautiful parks, responsive government (founded 1834) and significant architecture; collectively earning St. Charles its reputation
as the Pride of the Fox! Over 2,200 businesses employ over 34,200 people consisting of a balanced mix of retailers, restaurants,
manufacturing facilities and other goods and services. St. Charles
has been named one of the region’s “Top 10” cities by the Chicago
Tribune and claims 1,269 hotel rooms, 3 shopping districts, 120
miles of bike paths in Kane County, a full-service resort and spa,
golf, live theater, convention center, world-class training/meeting
facilities and a welcoming business community…all making this
picturesque city on the Fox River a destination for fine dining, arts
and entertainment, recreational opportunities and unique shopping.

Airport and aviation leaders require a deep understanding of current issues and critical concerns as seen from the top of an industry-related organization.
Leadership by its very nature has historically been difficult to concisely define. Leadership may typically be defined as the process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task. While this definition may be thought of as comprehensive and concise, it may also be considered vague and open to interpretation. In the airport and aviation environments this definition typically has the following interpretations:

The process of social influence may be:• Providing a common mission that has the buy-in of the • organization;• Having effective incentive (and sometimes disciplinary) • programs; or• Ensuring positive relationships with the airport board, • tenants, clients and constituents.
The support of others may include:• Airport operations and administrative staff;• Contractors;• Tenants;• The airport board, city manager, and elected • officials
To address these objectives, the ACS Leadership Curriculum was developed under three overarching topic areas and organized as three modules. The three modules are titled:
1. Leadership Concepts 2. Leadership Fundamentals 3. Leadership Execution
Each of these modules cover fundamental concepts, successful tools and practicality, as well as applications to the airport and aviation environments. In this first workshop, we’ll cover the first two courses – Leadership Concepts & Leadership Fundamentals.
In the Spring of 2018, we’ll come together again for another two-day workshop and complete the third course - Leadership Execution. This will give the attendees time in between the two workshops to further study and use the tools in their workplace with encouragement to exercise them on a daily basis.
The accomplishment of a common task may be:• The safe and effective operation of the airport on a • daily basis;• Planning for airport expansion;• Handling unusual or emergency conditions; or• Achieving optimal organizational effectiveness.
