Tour of the Dag Hammarskjöld Library ACRL/NY – Professional Development Committee May 22, 2015

Dag Hammarskjöld Library Opened in 1961; 6.2 million dollars donated by the Ford Foundation to build the Library
Introduction by Ms. Ramona Kohrs, Librarian and the Outreach and Professional Development officer at Dag Hammarskjöld Library
Map Collection 80,000+ sheet maps in collection; includes peace keeping maps;
some used to settle issues of boundaries
The collection includes 7,000+ “League of Nations” documents (2nd largest after the collection in Geneva)
and the Charter of the United Nations
UN documents/publications 50,000+ linear feet, approx. 10 million items in seven (7)
languages includes resolutions, mandates; housed in compact shelving units
The Woodrow Wilson Reading Room Such a nice welcome and hospitality offered by the UN Librarians and staff!
The Chief Librarian, Mr. Lain Watt talks about the challenges and issues at the Dag Hammarskjöld Library. Many of the challenges discussed such as budget
and outreach to stakeholders mirrored the ones at academic libraries.
