What are Short Breaks?Traditionally short breaks were referred to as respite. However, the term has changed recently and the term “short breaks” is more widely used. A short break is used for any activity or support that offers disabled children and or children with complex health needs an opportunity to have fun, try new activities, socialise, make friends and promote independence. The short break supports the child in a safe environment and as a result parents / carers and the child’s family get a break from their caring responsibilities. Short Breaks come in a variety of formats and can last from a few hours, a day or two or a couple of weeks.

Parent / Carers GuideMany families with disabled children and / or health conditions can benefit from regular “short breaks “Short breaks can provide families with a mechanism to cope with the pressures of caring for a disabled child, taking a break from caring for your child is not an admission of failure, it is a positive step. A break is an opportunity to recharge batteries, spend time with others or pursue an interest, hobby or to simply relax.

A short break also allows your child to have a change of scene, meet with other children, make friends, have fun and try different experiences. This can contribute to your child’s personal and social development. It can also be helpful in getting your child used to spending time in different settings with other people as they grow up. Many families are unaware they have access to this facility.

What facilities are available?CareTech has a specialist home designed to support young people aged 3 to 18 with learning and or physical disabilities as well as those with more profound and multiple learning difficulties and or complex health needs. We focus on the child’s ability and work to individual family needs.
