    LEMONSPONDEROSA LEMON (Citrus pyriformis)

The Ponderosa is the largest lemon that weknow of - as big as two pounds - with enough

juice for at least two pies. Although it fruits

early and often, the Ponderosa is primarilygrown as an ornamental. The large bumpy

fruit holds extremely well on the tree, even on

smaller specimens. Our grafted versions grow

to about half the size of a true lemon tree, with large citrus-scented leaves and larger-

    than-average citrus blossoms.

    IMPROVED MEYER LEMON

    (Citrus limon X Citrus sinensis)

Of all citrus trees, the Improved Meyer

Lemon is one of the hardiest and it is one ofthe most productive, for its size. It is not a

true lemon though. In fact, the mature fruit

of the Meyer looks more like a large orange

with a small nipple. It makes a delicious lemon substitutenonetheless. The Meyer flesh is a light orange-yellow color, with

juice sweeter than that of most lemons. And best of all, it is asmall compact tree which can grow well in most U. S. climates. Our Improved Meyer Lemon makes a striking addition to the

patio in the summer. When it is time to move the plant indoors,

the sweet perfume-scented blooms, followed by ornamental fruit, brighten just about any cold spell. Introduced to the United States

(from China) in the early twentieth century, it was discovered by

Frank N. Meyer, who was on assignment from the USDA as an

agricultural explorer. The University of California developed theImproved Meyer Lemon as a virus-free tree.

Did You Know? Meyer Lemon trees are among the mostpopular citrus container plants because they bloom for anextended period and bear bumper crops of mouth-watering fruit.

    KAFFIR LIME (Citrus hystrix)

It is among the most unusual cultivated

citrus. And the leaves, not the fruit, areused extensively in Asian cooking -

particularly in Thai cuisine. The smooth

aromatic foliage of the Kaffir Lime is highin volatile oils, which gives it a mysterious

and distinctive flavor. Although it is sometimes substituted with

lemongrass or the juice of lemons or limes, the true flavor of fresh

Kaffir Lime leaves cannot be duplicated. The flesh and rind from

the green bumpy fruit can also be used in cooking. But start withvery little, as the juice is quite sour with a bitter aftertaste! We

like to leave the fruit on the tree for its ornamental value.Although the Kaffir Lime was first cultivated centuries ago, the

increased demand for it in North America is relatively recent. The

Kaffir Lime is also known as Kieffer and Kuffre.

dishes and soups in Southeast Asia.

CARA CARA PINK NAVEL (Citrus sinensis)

The Cara Cara Pink Navel is one of the

more exotic varieties in our offering. Asan offspring of the Washington and

Brazilian Bahia Navels, this variety has

some very interesting traits. For starters, the medium-sized fruit is deep orange,

with dark-pink flesh (similar in color to

the Rio Red Grapefruit). It is usually seedless. And the juice is

very sweet, with a low acid content. The tree is small-to-medium

(compared to other orange varieties) with foliage that isoccasionally variegated. The Cara Cara is relatively new to the

United States, having been introduced into Florida in the mid-1980s. It originated as a limb sport, selected from a navel tree at

the Hacienda de Cara Cara in Valencia, Venezuela.

Did You Know? Individual limbs of the Cara Cara Navel can

sometimes bear normal-colored fruit. This is a naturally occurringprocess.

All the dwarf citrus trees are grafted specimens

and are fruiting age when shipped. Depending onthe time of year, your tree may arrive full of

blooms and fruit. However, you can usually

    weeks or months of receipt.

Because it is the most predictable andreliably colored blood orange, the dwarf

Moro Blood Orange is the most popular

    commercial and home garden dwarf

    variety in the country.

    The Moro Blood Orange typically

features two shades of red - dark and darker. By the time the fruitmatures, the flesh is deep red. As it stays on the tree, it darkens toa deep purple hue. Regardless of color, which can vary, the dwarf

Moro Blood Orange consistently offers a rich and distinctive

    flavor at peak maturity.

Did You Know? The red color of the Blood Orange flesh is

brought about by anthocyanin pigments, which also cause thesame red coloration in other fruits and vegetables. These are

different than lycopene pigments found in pink grapefruit.

Our containerized true dwarf Moro Blood Orange tree is shipped

to you fruiting-aged in a 3-gallon container, with our own special

soil mix. We ship live trees on Mondays and Tuesdays only.

    EVERHARD NAVEL ORANGE

    (Citrus Sinensis)

This may be one of the best oranges for the

home gardener. For starters, the Everhard

Navel is more compact than the average navelorange tree. And fruit crops are generally

heavy. A bud-sport from the old line Washington Navel, the

Everhard was discovered and cultivated by the grandfather ofClay Everhard, a long-time citrus grower (and good friend of

ours) in the Texas Rio Grande Valley. In some seasons, thenavel is not so apparent. But, comparative testing by Texas

A&M University proved that the Everhard had more consistent

(fruit) bearing levels and higher resistance to post-harvest decaythan several other navel varieties. The Everhard Navel is so

reliable, in fact, that the commercial citrus industry south of New

Orleans purchased thousands of them to replace other navel

    varieties lost in a hurricane.

Did You Know? Oranges are represented by three major species:

common oranges, navel oranges and blood oranges.

    KUMQUAT MEIWA

    (Fortunella margarita X Fortunella japonica)

The small size, abundance of fruit andcompact growing habit of the Meiwa

Kumquat tree make it an outstanding

    fruiting ornamental perfect for container

growing. And since they can withstandtemperatures below 20 F, kumquats are easily grown in areas that

are too cold for most varieties of citrus. Although kumquats

closely resemble citrus (and the fruit is often sold as such), theyare actually species of Fortunella.

Did You Know? Unlike most varieties of citrus and other fruit, kumquats are generally eaten whole rind and all.

The Nagami Kumquat may be one of the

best Citrus varieties for container growing.

It is widely considered a remarkableornamental because of its symmetrical

leaves and brightly colored fruit. But it also

has extraordinary cold tolerance. TheNagamis oval-shaped fruit is usually eaten

whole, including the sweet fleshy rind. This is the most popular

commercially cultivated Kumquat in Florida. It is also grown

commercially throughout China and Japan. Did You Know? Theword Kumquat comes from the Cantonese word kin ku,

    MANDARINS

    SATSUMA MANDARIN Citrus unshiu)

If ever there is a contest for the best overall

Mandarin Orange, the Satsuma will get ourvote. Not only is it seedless, the Satsuma is

very easy to peel (hence the nicknames

zipper skin and kid-glove) and it storeswell. As for flavor, the Satsuma is quite

sweet. And its deep orange-colored flesh

makes it a feast for the eyes as well. Of course, we also like itbecause it makes a great container plant, even in cold areas. The

Satsuma typically matures in time to begin harvesting by early

autumn. Legend has it that the Satsuma was brought from China

to Japan almost 500 years ago. It was later named for a province

    in southern Kyushu, Japan.

SATSUMA OWARI The most common Satsuma in the US, theOwari fruit has a very loose rind and typically matures between
