From the Rectory 3.
Peak holiday season begins this month. “Holiday” of course derives from “holy
day” – harking back to when a break from labour occurred in order to observe a
religious festival. That connection has been severed; but there is still a Biblical
basis in the concept of the Sabbath. Just as one day of rest is set aside each week,
so within the year there should be periods set aside for rest, recreation and
refreshment.
Keeping the Sabbath is one of the Ten Commandments, which are listed twice in
the Old Testament. This is one of the few of the Ten for which a reason is given
– but the justifications are different. In Exodus 20, reference is made to the
creation story in which God rested on the seventh day, his work complete. This
divine precedent ties the Sabbath into the godly ordering of creation – it’s the
way things should be. Moreover, the seventh day is marked out as “holy” – set
apart for God: a chance to reflect, pray and be thankful. So we return to the idea
of a holiday as holy time. Freed from the pressure of work, there is space to
reflect, to take a different perspective on life. One of the pleasures for me is
worshiping at a different church (where I don’t have to conduct the service!).
Even if you don’t regularly go to church, it’s something you could do – you’ll be
made just as welcome. Even more people visit a church or two when they are on
holiday: that in itself is a spiritual experience – as visitor books attest, most
appreciate a sense of light, space and peace.
In Deuteronomy 5 the justification is different: “remember that you were slaves
in Egypt”. Presumably the Hebrew slaves didn’t get a day off! Remembering the
harshness of incessant labour was justification enough to set apart a day a week
out of gratitude to the God who had brought them out of that situation. But
there is another aspect: the commandment emphasises that the slaves and
servants of the Israelites should share in the Sabbath and rest as they do. The
Israelites are to be better masters and mistresses than the Egyptians.
When it comes to holidays that hardly applies: hotel and restaurant staff, visitor
attraction and travel staff, accommodation cleaners – these and others have to
work so that we can relax – not to mention those who are holding the fort back
home. We are fortunate to live in an area where other people come on holiday
– so see more of both sides. It’s something else to be thankful for when we take
a break; to ensure that those who serve us feel appreciated; to hope that they
are fairly rewarded and enjoy their own break from work at another time.
In the love of God,
Martin Greenland

Ecumenical News Ecumenical activity naturally focuses on locations where different denominations have
places of worship – in our area that now means Acle and Freethorpe. But the
relationship based in Freethorpe also extends to Halvergate (where until recently there
was a Methodist Chapel) and Reedham (through the joint Open the BookTeam, which acts
out Bible stories in Reedham and Freethorpe Primary Schools). Open the Book nationally
is celebrating its 20th birthday this year, so we decided to mark it at our summer Joint
Service, which this year will be held at Reedham: 11.00am, Sunday 7th July – our team
will be performing as part of the service.
This month we say farewell to local Methodist Minister Steve Cullis as he and Julie move
to Wymondham. Steve has been a joy to work with on the local ecumenical scene. He
will be participating in the joint service; his farewell will be at Acle Methodist Church on
Sun 21st July at 3.00pm. In the autumn we will welcome in his place the Revd Andrew
King, who has past connections with the area.

Sea Sunday
Most of the goods we import come to us by sea. The Mission to Seafarers ministers to the international crews who bring them to our shores, often away from home for long periods and sometimes exploited. We will be celebrating Sea Sunday on 14th July at Limpenhoe at 9.30am and Acle at 11.00am (with thanks to the Revd David Casson). On the same Sunday, the preacher at Reedham will be Reader Keith Gerrard, our Deanery Lay Chair.

REEDHAM PARISH COUNCIL 13.
Meeting held on Monday 3rd June 2019 at Reedham Village Hall
There were 7 Councillors present, the Clerk, County Councillor Brian Iles and District
Councillor Grant Nurden. 3 members of the public were in attendance. The Council
meeting commenced at 7.30 pm.
Mr Malcolm Edge was co-opted onto the Council. There are currently 4 vacant Councillor
positions. Please contact the Clerk for further details.
Delays to the software for the new signalling system on the Berney Arms rail line have
delayed its opening.
District Councillor Nurden has visited the Recycling Manager at Broadland on several
occasions to enquire about the overflowing bins on Riverside. They are very aware of the
problem and are trying to find a solution for the short, and long, term.
The Chairman of the Village Hall Committee Chris Bradbury gave the following report:
there were no issues with play equipment safety inspection for June. The May Cash Bingo
jackpot was won, the lucky winner getting £300, so the jackpot now stands at £200 in 45
numbers or less.
One planning applications was received: a single storey extension to replace the existing
bathroom (revised proposal) at Oak Tree Cottage, 4 Witton Green, NR13 3HH. The
Council had no objection.
There was 1 recorded crime in Reedham in May, a public order offence on Ferry Road.
A very positive meeting was held between the Parish Council and the landowner in the
negotiations for the reopening of the Permissive Path. The wording for the new
Agreement is close to being finalised. A further meeting is planned for the beginning of
July.
The Speed Sensor readings for May gave an average speed on Station Road of 31.3mph in
a 30pmh zone. The previous reading was 31.6mph. 13,000 vehicle movements were
recorded. If you have a location you would like considered for the Speed Sensor please
contact the Clerk or Cllr Simon Pittam.
Mr Terry Snell has retired as the Area Poppy Organiser. The Parish Council would like
to take this opportunity to thank him for all his hard work over the last 12 years.
Reedham District has raised an amazing £35,000 over this time!
The waste bins on Riverside provided by Broadland District Council are for river users
not domestic waste. Please use your own bins as overflowing public bins give an untidy
impression of our lovely village. Broadland District Council are making enquiries as to
who is using their bins.
Do you know who owns the plot of land half way up/down Middle Hill? Please contact
the Clerk if you have any information.
Please continue to use the Parish recycling bottle banks on Riverside and at the Village
Hall. These bring in funds for projects around the village.
Time and Date of Next Meeting.
Monday 1st July 2019 at 7.30pm in the Village Hall. All parishioners are welcome to attend.
DOG FOULING IS AN OFFENCE. PLEASE CLEAR UP AFTER YOUR DOG.
THERE IS A £100 IN BROADLAND FOR NOT CLEARING UP AFTER YOUR DOG IN A
PUBLIC SPACE. IF THERE IS NO BIN NEARBY TAKE IT HOME WITH YOU.

Churches Trust Cycle Ride 14. Please pump up your tyres, or dust off you walking boots, pack a picnic and plan a
route to visit as many of the most beautiful churches in Norfolk as you can on
the 14 September 2019.
The annual Bike Ride is an excellent way of making money for your own church as well
as the Norfolk Churches Trust. This year the trust is offering a £1,000 prize to the most
improved church. i.e the church that raises the most money compared to last year.
• Please do remind people to take a camera and send in their pictures. We will
choose three of our favourites to receive £50 prizes but we also use the pictures for
social media and we try and use some for an article in the EDP.
• We are delighted if people drive round the churches if they don’t feel like jumping
on a bicycle. This is becoming more popular each year.
• Justgiving makes it easy to raise money from family and friends. See website for
details. https://norfolkchurchestrust.org.uk/bike-ride/taking-part/
• The person who raises the most money receives a certificate from the Prince of
Wales.
• For the more competitive ,the Wall of Fame on the website records the people who
manage to visit the most churches in the day by Bike and Walking.
Lego Tokens - EDP An incredible 5,765 Lego tokens were collected for the Reedham school thanks to a fantastic community and friend’s effort. The school would like to thank all who contributed to this; details of the outcome will be given when known.
Beighton Summer Fête and Strawberry Teas After the monsoon season during the preceding week, Beighton basked in gloriously
warm sunshine on Saturday 15th June. A good number of visitors participated in the
Fête, Auction and Strawberry Teas enjoying a range of traditional games, delicious food
and the auction conducted by novice auctioneer Ian Masters, formerly of Look East.
There was a wide variety of items to tempt bidders from vouchers to a tour of the
Cantley Sugar Factory to a Flying Experience and Balloon Flight. A signed 2018-19 NCFC
pennant was hotly contested, along with the offer of a dinner party cooked for the
winner.
At the end of an exhausting but brilliant day, a total of £1,800 was added to the Beighton
Church Restoration Appeal. Huge thanks to all the team who made this possible and
everyone who supported the event.
Kate Ashcroft
P.S. After all receipts and expenses taken into account, we have made a staggering
£2,150.24.
IMPORTANT! Outlook Copy Date and Folding. 15. Because of family commitments, Copy Date will be exceptionally early this month –
Friday 12th July. Any pictures for the cover need to be in even earlier.
Also, we are getting very short of people able and willing to come and fold and staple the
magazine in Reedham. This usually takes place on an agreed afternoon between 20th and
24th of the month. If there are enough volunteers, a rota can be arranged. If you could
help, at least on occasions, please contact Sue Arnold on 01493 701195. We could also
do with some more people to deliver – at present Ferry Road and part of Church Road
are not covered, at least temporarily.

Reedham Garage/Yard Sale This takes place on Sunday 7th July, starting at 10am. We have lots of homes taking part
this year. Please take a walk around our village and support this event. You may find
just what you have been looking for.

Reedham Village Show Please take a few minutes to look through the schedule, included with this month’s
Outlook. Everyone is welcome to enter. With flowers, fruit, vegetables, craft, cookery,
photography and children’s art work it makes a very colourful show. The blanket for the
Special Care Baby Unit can be multicoloured. It only needs approx.. 120 gms. double
knitting yarn and a pair of No. 8 needles. Cast on 1 stitch, increasing 1 stitch at the
beginning of each row to 140 stitches. Knit one row, then decrease 1 stitch each row to
the end. Cookery and photography are also very easy to enter.
Reedham Gardening Club Now we have had some rain everything is growing rapidly. We need to watch for pests
such as bright red lily beetles, slugs and snails. Try to use environmentally friendly
controls. As the birds fledge, hedges can be cut in August.
Please see if you have any flowers, fruit or vegetables suitable for the Show – they do not
have to be perfect!
Janet
I.T. It was pleasing to have new participants join the group at the recent session. There is
still plenty of room for any others who seek to improve their skills or wish to unravel
any problems with computers, tablets, i-phones etc.
Due to work and holiday commitments we will have to suspend meetings for July and
August. Refreshed and invigorated, September will see a resumption and hopefully some
new faces. We look forward to welcoming you to another successful period of I.T.
education for all at Reedham Village Hall. Again, it will be the second Monday of the
month, 9th September 2019 at 2pm.
Janet
Women’s Night Out At this month’s meeting, on Wednesday 3rd, at 7.30pm at Freethorpe Village Hall, we
