THE PROBLEM

Can we extract this funder information from the XML text?

• Not easily

<fn fn-type="financial-disclosure"> <p>This work was supported in part by NIH grant R01 GM094800B to G.J.J., a gift to Caltech from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, and a stipend from the Bayerische Forschungsstiftung to M.P. The funders had no role in study design, data collection and analysis, decision to publish, or preparation of the manuscript.</p> </fn> </fn-group> </back> </article>

6

In this example the information is tagged

as a footnote

Page 7: Acknowledging - Inera Inc. · Acknowledging Funders Chuck Koscher Director of Technology @ckoscher Inera XUG, Boston, November 12, 2015

… even when tagged, still not easily

• No standardization

• This publishers uses

– “Grant-sponsor” and “Grant-num”

• Other publishers may use different tags

Why does this matter?

• Funding bodies – Cannot track the published output of funding

• Publishers – Cannot report on articles supported by specific

funders or grants

• Institutions – Cannot link funding received to published output

• Lack of standard metadata for funding sources makes it difficult to analyse or data mine

8

Page 9: Acknowledging - Inera Inc. · Acknowledging Funders Chuck Koscher Director of Technology @ckoscher Inera XUG, Boston, November 12, 2015

The solution: FundRef links

• Funders record where they spend their money

• Publishers publish the outcomes of research

9

FundRef links these processes

Page 10: Acknowledging - Inera Inc. · Acknowledging Funders Chuck Koscher Director of Technology @ckoscher Inera XUG, Boston, November 12, 2015

FundRef Registry

• Agreed taxonomy of funding bodies

– >10,246 names (updated monthly)

– Donated by Elsevier SciVal

• with additions from other publishers

• The list is freely available for anyone to use

10

Page 11: Acknowledging - Inera Inc. · Acknowledging Funders Chuck Koscher Director of Technology @ckoscher Inera XUG, Boston, November 12, 2015

How it works

• Funding and grant number information is included in the article metadata

– Submitted to CrossRef with DOI data

… and further linking

• Link with ORCID

– ORCID = unique author identifiers

• The DOI links

– the researchers

– their funders

– their publications

14

Who adds funding information?

• Authors provide information during submission

... Or ...

• Publishers add information after acceptance

15

Page 16: Acknowledging - Inera Inc. · Acknowledging Funders Chuck Koscher Director of Technology @ckoscher Inera XUG, Boston, November 12, 2015

1. Authors provide information at submission

• Authors must provide the information – During submission process?

– (Make sure your instructions are VERY clear)

– “The information submitted here should match the information provided in the paper’s acknowledgement section.”

16

This must come from the FundRef Registry

Page 17: Acknowledging - Inera Inc. · Acknowledging Funders Chuck Koscher Director of Technology @ckoscher Inera XUG, Boston, November 12, 2015

Implementation widget http://labs.crossref.org/fundref-widget/

• Add this widget to your submission pages

• It allows the author to choose funder names from the FundRef Registry

17

Page 18: Acknowledging - Inera Inc. · Acknowledging Funders Chuck Koscher Director of Technology @ckoscher Inera XUG, Boston, November 12, 2015

2. Publishers add information after acceptance

• Manually extract from the article

– Match what the author says with the FundRef Registry

• Extract funding metadata from previously published articles

18

Page 19: Acknowledging - Inera Inc. · Acknowledging Funders Chuck Koscher Director of Technology @ckoscher Inera XUG, Boston, November 12, 2015

Finally …

• Make sure that the funder information is integrated with the article metadata before deposit to CrossRef

The technical stuff

• This is an example of what the metadata looks like

20

Page 21: Acknowledging - Inera Inc. · Acknowledging Funders Chuck Koscher Director of Technology @ckoscher Inera XUG, Boston, November 12, 2015

The technical stuff

• During deposit processing, Crossref will try to match funder names to funder identifiers

As deposited : Centre national de la recherche scientifique Registry name : Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique Alt registry name : National Center for Scientific Research

Finding funded publications http://search.crossref.org/fundref

Page 24: Acknowledging - Inera Inc. · Acknowledging Funders Chuck Koscher Director of Technology @ckoscher Inera XUG, Boston, November 12, 2015

And you see the articles funded

24

Page 25: Acknowledging - Inera Inc. · Acknowledging Funders Chuck Koscher Director of Technology @ckoscher Inera XUG, Boston, November 12, 2015

Enter a grant number, find an article

25

You can also use CrossRef Metadata Search http://search.crossref.org/

Page 26: Acknowledging - Inera Inc. · Acknowledging Funders Chuck Koscher Director of Technology @ckoscher Inera XUG, Boston, November 12, 2015

Search for a DOI and get funder information

26

Page 27: Acknowledging - Inera Inc. · Acknowledging Funders Chuck Koscher Director of Technology @ckoscher Inera XUG, Boston, November 12, 2015

Or search by ORCID to find all articles from an author - with funder information
