    ACHIEVE Making Headlines

Grant Anderson interview for Houston Racing Triathlon Club (HRTC)

HRTC: You have been able to use triathlons to overcome some personal challenges and now have taken an active role in

Leadership talk to me about this exciting new project called Achieve Houston.

Grant Anderson: Achieve Houston is an organization that works with inner city kids who may not have the where-with-all tobe exposed to good lifestyles and we teach the kids good life skills using triathlons. It is a free program for under privileged

kids who receive 6 Weeks at 4 Hours a Day, Monday thru Friday. We teach them: swimming, biking, and running, nutrition

and mental strategies with the idea of life and triathlons as setting a goal, having a plan, executing the plan, eating properly

and chances are - if you do all of those things you are going to meet your goal. That same formula works no matter what

you apply it to in life: whether it is triathlons, a job, and college, just whatever - if you follow those things you are going to

achieve what you set out to do.

HRTC: And at the end of the 6 Weeks?

GA: There is a USAT Sanctioned race: a 100 meter swim, a 5K bike and a 3K run.

HRTC: You have both Male and Female?

GA: Yea, we have both and it is about 50-50 and range in ages from 7 to 13.

HRTC: Okay, and that program is sponsored through our Parks and Recreation Department?

GA: MacGregor Park this past year, right down by The University of Houston

HRTC: When you say under-privileged kids, share with me some of the challenges.

GA: Most are not exposed to good nutrition. We had one child who said, that his Mom makes a huge bowl of Macaroni &

Cheese with a Cake and that is what we eat from all week. It fills you up; it is calories but is not exactly the best nutrition day

n and day out. Kinda sad! At Achieve Houston we teach them eating strategies and they are able to see it since we provide

hem with a breakfast and lunch. The biggest challenge from a triathlon standpoint is that most of them cant swim. Most of

hem havent been in a pool, so we teach them how to swim.

HRTC: Do they bring their own bikes, or do you provide a bike?GA: We provide them with a bike and they get to keep everything we issue them except for the bike.

HRTC: And how many kids went through the program this past summer?

GA: It started with 23 and through some fallout we ended up having 18 race.

HRTC: It sounds like a Fantastic Program. You were with these kids for 6 Weeks, 4 Hours a Day. You were the Head Coach.

GA: Not only that, but we took 4 lifeguards and trained them to be triathlon coaches and they worked with the kids as well.

Giving them a lot of credit, they were hands on coaches every day working with those kids.

HRTC: Tell me a success story that came out of The Achieve Houston 6 Week Program.

GA: There was a Grandmother that had both of her Grandkids in the program and she was crying in the middle of the 3rd

week because we had her Grandkids swimming. She said, I never believed they would be swimming in six weeks and nowhey are doing handstands and swimming laps and it is only week three. Oh, another kid lost 17 lbs and he couldnt swim or

un, but at the race he ran the entire time without having to walk.

HRTC: Through triathlons, one can learn so much and the application to other things in life whether it is your studies as a

youth or your career as an adult. You taking the time to spend with them and the rewards to see and measure their

progress, and you know those kids will touch other kids that is so positive.

GA: And they did a triathlon, they got a medal.

HRTC: How can anyone in the HRTC Membership who wants to be a part of Achieve Houston get in touch with you?

GA: They can email me at [email protected] or www.achievekidstri.org.

HRTC: I would encourage anyone who would like to give back to the sport in some way - to touch a child, because theexperience of that child will be with him or her for the rest of their life.

Kids go distance three times over

TRI-UMPHS What: Achieve Houston Kids Triathlon

    When: Aug. 2

Second city: The triathlon was staged by

Achieve Houston following the model set by

Achieve DC, a program to get inner-city youths

involved with triathlon and athletic training.

Making a difference: The program was setup by local dentist Charles Moser, who heard

about the DC program, flew to Washington,

got involved, met with them, and decided to

    try it here in Houston.

Sixteen youth between the ages of 9-14 had a

chance earlier this month to do something

that they would have never dreamed possible.

The youth participated in a triathlon,

consisting of a 100-meter swim, a 5-kilometerbike ride, and a 2K run, which all took place on

the campus of Texas Southern University. The

majority of the youth came from the

    neighborhood around the TSU campus.

The triathlon was staged by Achieve Houston.

Charles Moser came up with the idea for the

Triathlon when he learned of a similar event

staged last year in Washington DC.

    Alizas Story

It's rare in this life that one can point to the event that changed the course of their entire life. June 15, 2008, the daymy daughter Aliza Royce Bolling, age 9, joined the DC Achieve Triathlon Camp at Kenilworth park side Recreation inNorth East Washington DC, was the day the lives of my family were transformed. On that day, unbeknownest to us atthe time, the DC achieve program launched my family like a rocket on a journey that is now headed towards the 2016Olympic games in Rio DeJaniro

During that 1st summer program ( the 2nd year of the programs operations in DC and expansion into far northeast),Aliza finished the race...her confidence was boosted and self esteem strengthened. This was fueled by the weight shelost and the sense of accomplishment she gained by limping across the finish line. In a city where 95% of all childrenages 7-15 are morbidly obese (according to the BMI standard), Aliza had not escaped the symptoms of this epidemicravaging the lives of so many families across this country. But in fairness to Aliza her parents ( that's Melinda & I ) areenablers that have contributed to her health circumstances. At 9, according to her pediatrician, Aliza was in the 97percentile of her BMI chart.

When the DC Achieve camp ended, Melinda and I knew we could not go back to our old ways. The program had putAliza in motion and we were determined to build on her success. Some of the Achieve coaches and staff encouragedus to seek out extra curricular activities that would build on the experiences Aliza had gained. And with that we soughtout and joined the DC Wave swim team in September 2008. This local competitive swim team is sponsored by the D.C.Department of Parks and Recreation (DCPR) and is a member of the Potomac Valley Swimming league (PVSL). Over thecourse of the fall and summer competitions, Aliza participated in 5 meets including the 23rd District of ColumbiaAnnual Black History meet and the 22nd Black Heritage Meet in North Carolina. At the conclusion of her first year withthe D.C. Wave Swim Team, Aliza won the award for Most Improved Rookie in the 9 - 10 year old category.

During the summer of 2009, Aliza continued competitive swimming with the Takoma Park D.C. Swim Team. Aliza alsoparticipated for her second year in the D.C. Achieve Kid Triathlon. Both activities were enriching and exciting for Alizaand the family. Aliza vastly improved her time in the triathlon and won the award for Fastest GirlSwimmer. Additionally, Aliza and the Takoma Park D.C. Swim Team were successful and completed the summerleague undefeated!

D.C. Achieve has ignited a flame in Aliza and exposed her to many rich opportunities as an athlete. She has beeninvited to Press Conferences and honored by the D.C. Mayor and City Council as a member of the D.C. Wave SwimTeam. She has been invited to the Nation's Triathlon and watched some of her coaches compete. Over the upcomingyear, Aliza continues to train and looks forward to entering a local kid triathlon and continuing to build the skill set shebegan with D.C. Achieve.

It is amazing the impact the DC Achieve program has had on our family. At 10, Aliza's sights are now focused onbecoming a triathlete in the 2016 Olympics...see her USA Today interview; her recent visit to the pediatrician revealeda drop in her BMI score to the 90th percentile; her brother, Absalom is now on the swim team trying to keep up withhis sister; Melinda & I are working hard to improve the consumption of "Good food"; our family is biking along theMount Vernon trail in route to Washington's home; and most importantly, my daughter is happy, her self esteemcontinues to improve and her comfort with her body image is growing.

To the DC Achieve staff, keep up the fight, your program is saving lives...one familyat a time, you have saved ours.

    Sincerely,

    Anthony, Melinda, Absalom & Aliza
