    Components and Features

    the Encore Hartco ACE Clipper 7000 Automatic Clipping Machine is a specially engineered servo-driven machine that quickly and accurately installs a variety of anchor clips (spring retainers) onto wood frame rails with a variety of rail spacing and alignment configurations.

    the following are the main assemblies of the ACE Clipper 7000:

  • Adjustable Rail GuideHolds rail in

    position along table edge.

    Rail Sensor SwitchActivates the tool clipping assembly after the rail has advanced into the correct position.

    Tool Height Adjustment PinMechanism for raising and lowering the clipping head to ensure proper positioning of clips on the top corner of the rail.

    Tool Assembly (Eclipser Clipping Head) Mechanically presses the clip into the rail.

    Exit Tabletwo-tiered table (below) designed to automatically clear rails after clips have been installed. An air-powered valve (at right) tilts to drop the finished rail in the upper tray into the high capacity collection tray below.

    Preparing for Operation

    LOAD A ROLL OF ACE CLIPS1. orient coil so clips run off the top of coil. Load roll

    onto spool rod (A).

    2. push spool against magnetic brake (B).

    3. tighten “set screw” (C), located on the side of magnetic brake, until it presses against the spool rod. this prevents roll from accidentally

    unspooling clips too rapidly.

    4. thread clips over clip lifter rod (D) and down inside chute.A

    CONNECT TO POwER SOURCEA 120v outlet is the default. if using a 220v power source, a transformer is required (EH part #20281.1).

    SET AIR PRESSURE1. Attach air supply to inlet.

    2. pull up cap of air regulator to the “unlock” position. turn cap to set air pressure between 60–90 pSi.

    Clockwise = increases pressure Counterclockwise = decreases pressure

    determine the lowest pSi the machine requires to drive the fasteners securely and use that setting. (Note: the factory uses 80 pSi.)

    4. push regulator cap back down into “lock” position after setting air pressure.

    FEED CLIPS INTO MACHINE1. Verify that rear feed cylinder

    is pointing down.

    2. push clips into back of tool until clips contact driver blade and can go no further.

    REPLACING A ROLL OF ACE CLIPS 1. For safety reasons, operator

    should wait until the last clips of the old roll have cleared the feed cylinder and then pause or stop the machine.

    2. Follow steps in “LoAd A RoLL oF ACE CLipS” on previous page.

    3. With constant pressure, feed clips of the new roll in behind the last clip of the previous roll.

    REMOvING ACE CLIPS FROM TOOL ASSEMbLY1. the rear feed cylinder (E), is

    located behind the clipping tool and points downward when the machine is in operation.

    2. to remove clips, lift the feed cylinder up. Swing flag (F) located underneath joint up to support cylinder.

    3. Spread left and right pawls (G) away from side plates of clipping tool.

    4. While holding pawls apart, slide clips back and out of machine.

    Caution: do not overspread pawls.

    CHAIN TENSION ADJUSTMENTBefore operating the machine, confirm that the drive chain is set to the optimal tension.

    1. View the position of the chain as it appears in the chain guard check window (A).

    2. the chain position should be centered in the window, top to bottom (B). A tape measure inserted in the hole on the underside of the chain guard should be used to confirm that the space above and space below the chain are the same at 2-1/2 inches (63.5mm).

    3. A 9/16th socket wrench is required to make adjustments to the tension bolt at the end of the chain assembly (C).

    Turning clockwise: tightens (lifts) the chain

    LOAD RAIL(S) ONTO TAbLE place rails in front of the back fence, with leading ends resting against the vertical rail stops. Move the lowest rail forward to set the tool height. See box “SEttiNG tooL HEiGHt” on page 18 for instructions.

    INSERT LUGS INTO CHAINplace lugs on the chain according to the “LuG SpACiNG GuidE” on page 25. install the lugs by the chain guard cover, facing so you’re looking down the length of the machine. Lift chain guard to the opEN position.

    1. Rotate the right or front part of the lug about 90 degrees (see drawing at right).

    2. Fit the two pegs on the left or back half into the chain.

    3. pull the right half to the right as far as possible.

    4. Rotate the right half of lug back down and make sure that the two pegs fit into the chain.

    Return chain guard to CLoSEd position.

    THE MECHANICAL PROCESS the ACE Clipper 7000 applies spring anchor clips to wooden rails efficiently, concisely and with minimal operator assistance. to better understand the settings and terminology in this manual, the following is a description of the mechanical process that applies those clips.

    First, a length of wood, known as a rail, is loaded onto the table. Next, lugs are set at appropriate intervals on the chain, and a clip installation program is loaded (using the controller) to run.

    the chain starts at a given speed, pushing a rail until the rail sensor switch is activated. At that time, the chain is decelerated (or slowed to a stop) until the rail is in position where a clip needs to be applied. the Eclipser tool fires, installing the clip. The chain is then accelerated, returning to the programmed clipping speed. that speed is held until the chain must once again be decelerated to a stop for the next clip.

    this continues until the last clip is installed. the chain lug continues to move the rail onto the upper tray of the exit table until it clears the clipping machine completely. At that point a sensor activates the pusher under the tray to tilt it, causing the completed rail to drop onto the larger collection tray below.

    AUTOMATING THE PROCESSthe automated processes of the ACE Clipper 7000 are controlled by the microprocessor in the controller unit. program scripts, or “recipes”, stored in the controller direct the mechanical application of clips to rails.

    A. Main power switch. Rotate handle to turn power on/off.

    B. Ethernet cable port. Allows recipes created on a pC or other device to be uploaded, and recipes created on the controller to be downloaded.

    C. uSB port. Allows recipes to be imported from a uSB stick (flash drive) or any external drive using a uSB cable.

  • SETUP AND DEFAULT vALUESthe settings described here determine the speed at which rails are processed through the ACE Clipper 7000. these default values have been set at the factory for optimal operation of the machine.

    Chain Speed – Clippingthis is speed of the chain as it moves a rail between clip positions, also known as the machine’s “clipping speed.” this value can be adjusted, however, it is important to consider the following before doing so.

    • A short rail with many clips will see very little improvement in the total number of rails that can be produced per hour.

    • A long rail with few clips will show the greatest increase in the total number of rails that can be produced per hour.

    this is because of the time it takes to decelerate, apply the clip, and accelerate the rail. if the clips are close together, the rail must begin slowing down for the next clip before it can reach maximum speed.

    Chain Auto-Stop Time [Sec]this is the amount of time that the chain keeps running after the final clip in a production run has been applied. At the end of the set time, the chain will stop. this feature ensures the chain runs only as long as needed to clear off the last rail after a production run is completed.

    Chain Deceleration [in2] The rate at which the chain slows down

    the degree of accuracy needed by the customer will dictate whether adjusting the acceleration/deceleration is advisable. the default setting is the optimal setting for the ACE Clipper 7000. Changing the default setting is NOT advised.

    Rail Sensor Offsetthis is the distance the leading edge of the rail will travel to get to the clipping head after it passes the sensor. From that point on, the clipping head will apply clips to the rail according to the programmed recipe running. Changing the default setting is NOT advised.

    Clipping Tool “ON” Timethis setting indicates the amount of time that the driver blade takes to go down and come back up, actively installing the ACE clip. Changing the default setting is NOT advised.

    wARNING: Changing the default values of the CHAiN ACCELERAtioN, CHAiN dECELERAtioN, RAiL SENSoR oFFSEt or CLippiNG tooL “oN” tiME to values outside the scope of capability of the motor or machine could result in catastrophic damage. increasing machine operational speed may also reduce clip placement accuracy and increase risk of injury to the operator. Consult with Encore Hartco technical support BEFoRE making changes.

  • Using the ControllerTHE MAIN SCREENThis is the first screen to come up after turning on the power. the MAiN screen (Fig. 1) displays the buttons that access the machine’s main functions:

    • SEtup & dEFAuLt VALuES goes to the screen where a user would make changes to the machine’s default settings. it is also the portal to the LoG iN screen and is password protected.

    • RUN SCREEN activates the machine once the clip application recipe is loaded and the rails are on the machine and ready to process.

    • RAIL RECIPES goes to the screen where clip placement configurations are programmed into specific “recipes” for the ACE 7000 to perform. Here these recipes are created, stored and retrieved as needed for specific rails used in your build.

    • FAULT SCREEN displays the fault codes that help to resolve problems that may arise while operating the ACE 7000.

    to protect against misuse and accidental disruptions to production, a log-in and unique password will be required for several key functions of the controller. Be prepared to enter a password whenever attempting to:

  • ADJUSTING DEFAULT vALUESthe ACE Clipper 7000’s factory default settings will apply to most of the applications an operator will encounter. if a setting must be adjusted, a log in and password will be required.

    1. From the MAIN screen (Fig. 1), tap the SETUP & DEFAULT VALUES button.

    2. then, at the MANUAL MACHINE OPERATION screen (Fig. 2), tap LOG IN.

    type in password on the keyboard, and hit ENtER (ENt).

    3. Back at the MMO screen (Fig. 2), tap MACHINE SETUP.

    4. this takes you to the SET UP & DEFAULT VALUES screen (Fig. 3).

    Enter changes to default settings here by tapping the field next to each setting and typing in a new value. SEE WARNiNG BoX BELoW BEFoRE MAKiNG CHANGES.

    to reset an adjustment to its original setting, touch the “FACtoRY dEFAuLt” box next to the field you want to change back.

    RAIL RECIPE TYPESthe ACE Clipper 7000 allows operators to set up precise and repeatable positioning of clips to rails. these programs, or “recipes” as they are more commonly called, are set up for specific rail fabrications using the ACE Clipper 7000 controller. they can also be imported from an external source via the uSB or ethernet connection ports located on the side of the controller box.

    Below are three different types of rail recipes:

    Standard RailsEvery clip is applied at the same distance from the preceding clip.

    Odd RailsClips are applied at different distances from each other.

    P1: distance from rail edge to center of 1st clip

    P2: distance from center of 1st to center of 2nd clip. optional. if not using, set to “0”

    P3: distance from center of 2nd to center of 3rd clip. optional. if not using, set to “0”

    CLIP TO CLIP: the distance between clips (center to center)

    TOTAL CLIPS: the number of clips installed on a rail

    Odd RAIL TYPE:

    P1: distance from rail edge to center of 1st clip

    CREATING A RAIL RECIPE1. After powering up, tap RAiL

    RECipES on the MAIN screen.

    2. this jumps to the RAIL RECIPES screen (Fig. 4). Set type of rail production to either Standard or Odd.

    use the drop-down bar and LoAd button to switch to desired rail recipe type (A).

    3. press CREATE NEW RECIPE (B). this will create a new entry in the recipe menu on the left side of the screen, indicated by (C).

    NOTE: All newly created recipes will be a duplicate of the last recipe created, with same name plus ”~1”, “~2”, etc. tacked on, carrying the same values.

    4. to rename the newly created entry, tap its title in the menu (D) to highlight it. tap the RENAME RECIPE button (E) and use the on-screen keyboard to give the recipe its new name.

    5. once the recipe has its correct name, type in the new clip placement settings in the recipe’s VALuES box (F). tap each VALUE field, input the desired number and then hit ENtER after each entry to set its value. (All measurements are in inches.)

    6. press the SAVE NEW VALUES button to save changes made to the recipe (G).

    IMPORTANT: Value changes will be lost if SAVE NEW VALUES is not pressed.

    7. to load the new recipe into production right away, first press:

    • WRITE TO DRIVE (H)

    and then press:

    • GO TO RUN SCREEN (I)

  • DELETING A RECIPERecipes that are no longer needed can be deleted. to avoid accidental deletions, operators must first confirm authorization for this action by logging in.

    1. From the RECIPE INPUT screen, highlight (tap) the recipe to be deleted (D).

    2. tap uNLoCK KEY (K) to get to the LOG IN screen. type in the password and hit ENt to return to the RAIL RECIPE screen.

    4. When done deleting recipe(s), tap the LoCK KEY (L).

    IMPORTING AND EXPORTING RECIPESRail recipes can be created externally and imported to the ACE Clipper 7000 controller, and can also be exported to another ACE Clipper 7000 controller or stand alone computer. this process is done using either a USB flash drive (stick) or an ethernet cable connection to an external pC.

    For more detail on this process, see Apppendix C.

    LOCATING RECIPES wITH A bAR CODE SCANNERSome manufacturers use rails that have been marked with a bar code.

    1. insert scanner gun’s uSB cable into the controller’s uSB port.

    2. Wait for the scanner to boot up, as indicated by beeps.

    3. use the scanner gun to scan a bar code. the recipe associated with that bar code will show up in the red search bar (M).

    Rail ProductionRUNNING A RAIL PRODUCTION RECIPEAfter powering up, tap RAIL RECIPES on the MAIN screen.

    1. At RAIL RECIPES (Fig. 6), select/highlight a saved rail recipe from the MENu (C). the recipe’s tYpE (A) and measurements in the VALuES fields (F) will be displayed for the operator to review.

    2. tap WRITE TO DRIVE (H) to load the desired recipe.

    ImporTanT: Write to drive will load the currently highlighted recipe immediately into produc-tion. Selecting a different recipe and then tapping the Go To rUn SCrEEn will not run that recipe.

    3. tap GO TO RUN SCREEN (I) when ready to start the production run.

    4. At RUN screen (Fig. 7), confirm that the desired recipe name is shown (O). The fields below it should show all values for a StANdARd rail recipe, and the first 5 values for an odd rail.

    5. Load rails in front of rear fence. use adjustable rail guide to push rails up against the rear fence (as shown on page 8).

    6. At RUN screen, press the JoG FoRWARd button (N) to move the lowest rail towards the clipping tool.

  • When the rail edge has reached the sensor (above), the color of the RAIL SENSOR button (R) will change from black to red.

    7. Set the Eclipser tool height. use the up and doWN arrows (Q) below CLippER HEiGHt (Fig. 8) to move the tool as necessary. See “SEttiNG tooL HEiGHt” for further detail on this operation.

    8. Feed clips into the back of the clipping tool (see page 6).

    9. tap StARt (S) to begin the production run. the StARt button will change its display to RuNNiNG.

    the machine’s status in the middle of the screen will also change from idLE to RuNNiNG. (T).

    SETTING TOOL hEIGhT • Place the rail to be produced under the gauge pin.

    • Using the UP and DOWN buttons on the RUN screen, lower or raise the clipping tool until the bottom of the gauge pin contacts the rail.

    • The top of the gauge pin rises slightly after engaging the rail.

    MANUALLY APPLYING CLIP(S)Single or low volume clips can be applied using a manual process, either from the RUN screen or the MANUAL MACHINE OPERATION screen.

    From the RUN screen (Fig. 10):

    1. use JoG FoRWARd and JoG REVERSE (N) to move rail into desired position.

    2. press MANuAL CLip (W) to manually install a single clip.

    WARNING: Make sure rail is in desired position and fingers are clear before touching the MANUAL CLIP button. It fires immediately when pressed.

    From the MANUAL MACHINE OPERATION screen (Fig. 11):

    1. Same as Step 1 above.

    STOP AND START bUTTONSpressing StARt (1) immediately begins or resumes machine operations.

    pressing Stop (2) immediately stops the machine and cancels the application of clips to the current rail. Essentially, it is an “abort” instruction for that rail.

    to resume production with the current recipe, press StARt (1), which then:

    • Clears the aborted rail to the exit table, and

    • Resumes applying clips to any rails remaining in the machine.

    to resume production with a different recipe, do not hit StARt.

    • Instead, hit RAIL RECIPES (7) and follow steps in to SWitCH to A diFFERENt RECipE on page 19. Load rails required, check lug positioning and then hit StARt (1).

    • The aborted rail will be cleared to the exit table and production will resume using the new recipe.

    PAUSE bUTTONuse pAuSE (3) as a temporary halt, i.e., to reload clips. When pressed, pAuSE becomes RESuME. press RESuME to resume production.

    EMERGENCY STOPpushing the red safety button on the outside front panel of the controller box (page 10) immediately halts all operations. An EMERGENCY Stop

    alert (5) will display on the RUN screen. After addressing the concern that required the full stop, resume operations by turning the red button on the controller to the right until it “pops” back out. Machine functions can only be resumed when the Emergency Stop is deactivated.

    IDLER GUARD OPENto prevent injury, the ACE 7000 has a sensor that disables the drive when the chain guard is left open. An alert displays on the RUN screen (6). to resume operation, close the guard.

    JOG FORwARD/JOG REvERSEthese action buttons (8) move the chain forward or backward to reposition the lug so that rails can be loaded properly.

    ACTIvE FAULT/PRESS FOR FAULT SCREENthis alert (9) explained in detail on the next page.

  • Addressing FaultsFAULT SCREENWhen issues arise that are not obvious, the controller’s FAULT SCREEN will display error codes to assist with restoring operations.

    if a problem occurs during a rail production run, the machine immediately halts operations. the RUN screen status will come up as MACHiNE pAuSEd (4) and an ACtiVE FAuLt button (2) will also appear (Fig. 12).

    1. tap the pRESS FoR FAuLt SCREEN button (3).

    2. the FAULT screen (Fig. 13) that appears will show code numbers and a brief descrip-tion of the problem. For more detail on what actions to take, see APPENDIX D: Troubleshooting.

    3. After addressing problem(s), tap the CLEAR dRiVE ALARM/FAuLt button (4), which will return user to the RUN screen.

    4. Hit RESuME to continue with production.

    5. if the machine will not accept a StARt or RESuME command, return to the FAuLt screen to check for error codes remaining. if none, contact Encore Hartco technical Support for further assistance.

  • Rail Production HistoryA valuable feature of the ACE Clipper 7000 clipping system is the ability to track and display rail production totals. these can be viewed on the RAiL pRoduCtioN HiStoRY screen (Fig. 14).

    this feature can assist with:

    • tracking how many rails have been completed to date for the fabrication of a specific product currently in production;

    • tracking rail production over a period of time, for example by shifts, by week, monthly, quarterly, etc.; and

    • determining when to perform recommended service operations.

    When setting up lugs, a 4-inch (102mm) gap should be left between the end of a rail and following lug. To optimize machine efficiency, use the maximum number of lugs appropriate for your rail length.

    to determine the maximum possible lugs you can use, add 4 inches (102mm) to the rail length you will be using. then divide the chain length, 276” (7010mm) by this number; the answer will equal the maximum number of lugs you may fasten to the drive chain.

    1. Rotate the right or front part of the lug.

    2. Fit the two pegs on the left (back) half into the chain and pull the right half to the right as far as possible.

    3. Rotate the right half of lug back down and make sure that the two pegs fit into the chain.

    4. Return chain guard to closed position.

    IMPORTING RECIPES

    WARNING: When importing from a USB drive or PC, ALL the recipes of the loaded type (either Standard or Odd) will be DELETED and REPLACED with those in the file being imported.

    Before importing files, if there are recipes on the controller that you want to keep, they must be exported from the controller first, and added to the Excel file of new recipes on the pC. (See subheads on this page for details). the controller only recognizes one “master” file for each type of rail, not multiple files of old and new recipes.

    1. insert a uSB drive (preferably empty) or pC ethernet cable into the appropriate port on the side of the controller.

    2. Navigate to the RAIL RECIPE screen on the controller.

    3. use the drop-down bar (1) to switch to the desired rail type and then press LoAd button next to it.

    4. Next, press the iMpoRt FRoM uSB StiCK button (2).

    5. Wait a minute for the recipes to be completely imported.

    6. Remove the uSB stick or disconnect ethernet cable from the controller.

    • To edit a recipe, search for the recipe name and change the values in the adjacent fields.

    • To add a recipe, follow the existing format and insert a new line for each additional recipe name and its clip spacing values.
