accommodation at LJMU 2013/14
1
all new students are guaranteed aroom in high quality accommodation
LJMU is committed to helping you find accommodation that best suits your needs, budget and lifestyle. You can choose one of 3,000 bedrooms in high qualityaccommodation across Liverpool. Most bedrooms feature private en-suite bathroomsand all have individual broadband connections - the cost of which is usually included inyour rent.
All our accommodation is organised into self-catering flats, typically housing five or sixstudents each. You will have your own bedroom with access to a communal living areaand fully fitted kitchen. Most bedrooms include a private toilet, sink and shower but flatswith shared bathrooms offer a more affordable alternative.
For academic year 2013/14 LJMU is pleased to confirm that all our accommodation willbe completely smoke free. This means that students are not allowed to smoke withintheir own bedroom or the communal areas of the flats.
Do not delay submitting your request as rooms are allocated on a “first come firstserved” basis. You can request accommodation if you have an unconditional or aconditional offer, as long as LJMU is your first choice university. You will need to make aninitial payment to secure your booking but this will be returned if you do not meet therequirements of your offer and are unfortunately not offered a place at LJMU.
Read this booklet carefully and consult the LJMU website if you require furtherinformation, in order to make your choice of accommodation. A detailed guide of facilitiesand prices for all the accommodation is now available on our website, requests can bemade from Friday, 1 February 2013 onwards.
Typical prices during the 2013/14 academic year: Standard en-suite bedroom: £102 to £115 per week including broadband and fuel costs
Deluxe en-suite bedroom: £109 to £123 per week including broadband and fuel costs
Standard bedroom in flat with shared bathroom(s): £77.50 to £102.00 per week including broadband and fuel costs
See pages 12 and 13 for a full list of prices in 2013/14.

Accommodation contracts are known as ‘tenancy agreements’ or ‘tenancies’ and are legallybinding for the full period once signed. Students who leave their accommodation during theacademic year are liable for the rent until the end of the contract or until a replacement is found, unless there are exceptional grounds for the tenancy to be cancelled.
Tenancies will commence on Saturday, 7 September 2013 and finish 42 weeks later on Friday, 27 June 2014. The Welcome Week for new students will commence on the weekend of 7 and8 September and the first day of teaching for the vast majority of courses is Monday, 16September 2013.
It is important to note that all tenancies cover the full academic year. If your course does notmatch the standard academic year - for example if you are a nursing or postgraduate student -you can usually extend the tenancy period into the summer.
Don’t forget that you retain occupancy of your flat and your bedroom during the Christmasand Easter breaks and you won’t have to move your belongings if you go home. You can alsostay on in your accommodation after the first year - the only exception is Apollo Court as thisis reserved for new students.
Whichever accommodation you choose, your rent will include all utility bills, a broadband connectionin your room and basic insurance cover. Parking costs extra at all the accommodation sites whereit is offered and is at least £400 per year.
If you are a UK student who can provide details of a guarantor, you can opt to pay your rent inthree equal instalments. Your guarantor will probably be a parent or guardian and they mustagree to act in this capacity. The three rent instalments coincide with your student funding, meaning you will not pay anything in advance to secure yourroom except the initial payment.
It is important that you apply for your student funding as early aspossible - do not wait for your exam results. If you have anyconcerns about paying for your accommodation, please contact theAccommodation Office.

location, location, locationAt LJMU most teaching takes place in Liverpool city centre at either our MountPleasant Campus or City Campus. All of the accommodation in this Guide is locatedin the city centre, so so if your teaching takes place there, you will have several optionswithin walking distance.
Courses in the Faculty of Education, Community and Leisure are taught at the IM Marsh Campus, located a few miles outside the city centre in Aigburth. Furtherinformation about living options can be found on page 9.
Because most LJMU students can walk to lectures, you should think very carefullybefore bringing a car to Liverpool. As in most cities parking is expensive and limitedand so if having your car is important, you should request accommodation early tomaximise your chances of securing a space.
For further information on where specific courses are taught, please consult theLJMU website.

Accommodation for City Campus students The City Campus is home to three LJMUFaculties:
Health and Applied Social Sciences Science Technology and Environment
The following accommodation options areideal for students undertaking courses inthese Faculties.
Marybone is a large three phase complexand is ideally located adjacent to the AvrilRobarts Learning Resource Centre andthe Tithebarn Street building. Marybone 1features flats with shared bathrooms at areasonable weekly rent. Marybone 2 and3 are almost identical and fully en-suite,although Marybone 3 is reserved for newhealthcare students (see page 10).
Victoria Hall is the smallestaccommodation option located within theCity Campus and is located close to theAvril Robarts LRC. It is particularlypopular with students studying Psychology,Sports Science and health-related courses.
Atlantic Point is located opposite theByrom Street teaching buildings and is oneof the largest sites offered to new students. There is a well-stocked shop and a largeamount of parking spaces available.
Students based in the City Campus canalso choose accommodation based closeto the Mount Pleasant Campus such asGrand Central, Europa, Opal Court orProspect Point.
However it is important to note that thevast majority of new students undertakingcourses within the City Campus willchoose to live in one of the three sitesdiscussed above.
The location of our city-centre Accommodationcan be seen on pages 6 and 7.

The I M Marsh Campus is located inAigburth, about four miles from the city-centre and is home to the Faculty ofEducation, Community and Leisure (ECL).There is no accommodation available on thecampus itself, except for a limited number ofrooms for new postgraduate students atRose Lane, which is ten minutes walk away.
Students who require accommodation whilestudying at I M Marsh can choose any of thecity-centre options and travel to the campusfor their lectures and the social facilities. Foursites in particular are recommended becauseof their proximity to public transport pick-up points.
Apollo Court is a modern and completelyen-suite option, located about 5 minuteswalk from the main railway station and closeto the busy London Road shopping area.Apollo Court is reserved exclusively for newLJMU students and hence has a friendlyatmosphere.
Great Newton Hall is located about 2minutes walk away from Apollo Court, which it resembles in terms of price andfacilities, being also completely en-suite.
North Western Hall is less expensive thanthe first two sites named above because allthe flats feature shared bathrooms and thesite is not as modern. However it is verycentrally located which makes it good valuefor money.
Grand Central is also very popular withstudents based at IM Marsh.
Students who choose to live in one of thesefour sites can share their flat with other ECLstudents if they wish. Students who chooseto live elsewhere can request to share withECL students but this cannot be guaranteed.Typically around two thirds of the newstudents living at Apollo Court and GreatNewton Hall each year are studying at IMMarsh.
Travelling to I M Marsh is easy. Two train lineshave stations within walking distance of theCampus and it is near a major bus route. Atravel pass that covers all trains and buseswithin the area costs about £50 per month.Detailed travel information will be sent to allstudents before their arrival at LJMU.
accommodation for I M Marsh students
Postgraduate and mature studentsThe majority of students entering accommodation will come to university straight fromschool or college and be aged under 21. If you prefer a quieter study environment, rooms are reserved for older students at a number of sites in the city centre.
If you wish to live in a flat with older students please indicate this when you submit yourrequest for accommodation. Every effort will be made to meet your needs but this cannotbe guaranteed in all cases. If you would prefer to live in a private house or flat, you shouldcontact Liverpool Student Homes (LSH) instead - see key contacts on back cover.
Healthcare studentsNursing, midwifery and paramedic studies students may experience difficulties whensharing flats with other students because of differing schedules and workloads.
We strongly recommend healthcare students choose Marybone 3 as they will only sharetheir flats with students on similar courses. Rooms at Marybone 3 will be available from
Saturday, 7 September 2013 but will be available earlier ifthe Nursing, Midwifery or Paramedic Studies coursescommence earlier than Monday, 9 September 2013.
Students requiring accommodation for courses commencing in the period from January to March 2014 should consult the LJMU website from Friday, 1 November2013 to check what options are available.
Disabled students Accommodation facilities for students with disabilities areconstantly improving and LJMU is committed to ensure thatservices are accessible to all. If you require accommodationwith particular adaptations please inform us as soon aspossible and if necessary we can arrange a visit for you tocheck that the accommodation you want will meet yourneeds. Further information can be obtained from theDisability Team - contact details can be found on the backcover.
