Southampton is one of the UK’s up and coming cities,with superb leisure and cultural facilities. Situatedon the south coast, and surrounded by the beautifulNew Forest, Southampton has large green areasand a friendly, cosmopolitan feel.

The city offers galleries, cinemas, theatres, restaurantsand nightclubs. West Quay Shopping Centre and RetailPark, one of the UK’s top 10 shopping destinations,contains all your high street stores in one easy location.The Ocean Village and LeisureWorld complexesprovide mainstream entertainment with cinemas,cafes, bars and restaurants, while the Harbour LightsTheatre shows arthouse and cult movies. There is alsoa wide range of venues that provide eveningentertainment for everyone.

Southampton also has much to offer for sportingenthusiasts. The city is one of the UK’s premier venuesfor sailing and watersports, and is also home to bothHampshire County Cricket Club and SouthamptonFootball Club. The Quays Eddie Read Swimming andDiving Complex is the perfect place to take the plunge,and there are many other opportunities both acrossthe city and through the University to partake insporting and recreational activities.

Conveniently located, Southampton is just over anhour from Central London, and even closer to thecoastal resorts of Brighton, Poole and Bournemouth.The Isle of Wight can be seen across the water on aclear day, and the historic cities of Winchester andSalisbury are also nearby. The city enjoys excellenttransport links within the UK and to Europe, by road,rail, sea and air, from the city’s International Airport.

The medieval cathedral provides a fantastic backdropto the main high street, which is packed with independentshops and household names. Theseinclude a cinema, museums, swimming pool and gym,playing fields and numerous points of artistic andhistoric interest.

With over 25 halls of residence, top class facilitiesand a guarantee of an offer of accommodation inyour first year, it’s no wonder our accommodationis so popular.

If you are a registered full time first year undergraduateor international postgraduate student, you will beguaranteed an offer of halls accommodation if:

– You submit an application for accommodation bythe 1st August in the year in which your studiescommence.

– You are unaccompanied and apply for singleaccommodation (i.e. you do not bring anydependents, such as a partner or child).

– You normally live outside the Southampton Cityboundary.

– You make the University of Southampton your firmchoice (for undergraduate students).

International studentsIf you are an international (fee paying) student, you areguaranteed an offer of accommodation in each of youryears of study, as long as you apply by the relevantdeadline. For your first year this would be the 1st Augustin the year in which your study commences; forsubsequent years the deadline is before the start of thesecond term. Exact deadlines are published nearer thetime – please visit our website at www.southampton.ac.uk/accommodation for further details.

Insurance students – undergraduatesonlyIf you are an undergraduate student and have madethe University of Southampton your insurance choice,you will be offered accommodation in a twin shareroom for the start of term, as long as you meet theother terms of guarantee stated above. You will thenbe offered a single room as soon as one becomesavailable; typically this would be within the first sixweeks of term.

Clearing students – undergraduatesonlyIf you join us through Clearing, we unfortunately cannotguarantee you an offer of halls accommodation.Depending on availability, we may be able to make youan offer on a first-come first-served basis. Pleasecontact us to discuss your options, and also for adviceon renting accommodation within the private sector.

Postgraduate students– International: If you are an International fee paying

postgraduate student, you are guaranteedaccommodation for your first year as long as youcomply with the criteria stated above.

– UK and EU: If you are a UK or EU postgraduatestudent, we are unfortunately unable to guaranteeyou accommodation. You can apply online, and wemay be able to make you an offer of accommodation;however this is dependent on room availability.If we are unable to offer you accommodation, wecan provide assistance with renting accommodationin the private sector.

Meeting our guaranteeIn years of exceptional demand, some ‘firm choice’students may be offered accommodation in a ‘twin-share’ room as well as those ‘insurance choice’students. This would be on a short term basis, andtransfers to single rooms for these affected studentsare our priority in the first six weeks of term. Inaddition to this, some students may be offeredaccommodation in halls that are owned and/ormanaged by a private company.

Ourguarantee to youWhy live in halls?University is not simply about education, and thehalls experience is one we would very muchrecommend. There are many advantages to livingin halls; here are just some of them:

– The student experience: Halls give you theopportunity to mix with people from diverse socialand cultural backgrounds, and to enhance socialskills and widen your intellectual horizon, all withinfriendly and welcoming surroundings.

– Our halls are within easy reach of all teaching sites onfoot, by bike or on the Uni-link bus service. Uni-linkalso provide regular services to the city centre, airport,railway and coach stations. As a resident, you willreceive a bus pass for the duration of your contract,so the service can be used as often as you like, at noextra cost to yourself!

– All halls offer a safe and secure environment with24 hour security on all sites and multi-lock accesssystems.

– No bills! Fees for single rooms in halls include utilitybills*, internet connection and a Uni-link bus passfor the duration of your stay.

– A wide and varied social scene. Hall activities caninclude live bands, club nights, sporting eventsincluding intramural hall tournaments, parties, andin some halls, a Summer Ball.

– The Wardenal Team in halls comprises of staff orstudents with experience of university life, who canpoint residents in the right direction for any helpthey may need. They facilitate communal living byensuring that students abide by hall regulations ina social, study-conducive environment, and do notbreach health and safety rules in their accommodation.A rota system provides out of hours cover. They arenot trained to deal with emergency situations, andwill contact the appropriate services in suchcircumstances.

*A small number of halls require ‘top-up electricity’, available from therelevant Hall Reception. The fees for affected rooms are lower thancomparable rooms with this facility.

You will need to arrange your own belongings insurance and TelevisionLicence; however please note that we cannot guarantee televisionreception in all halls, so we would advise you to wait until you arrivebefore investing in a licence.

Postgraduate and mature undergraduatestudentsWe have a range of accommodation suitable forpostgraduate and mature undergraduate students,with all types of room available.

We do understand that your lifestyle and workrequirements may differ from that of newundergraduate students and we will allocate you inseparate areas of halls wherever possible. We also havea limited number of properties suitable for couplesand/or families.

We advise students with partners and/or a young childto apply as early as possible as we cannot guaranteethis type of accommodation. If suitable accommodationis not available, we can also provide advice and guidanceon private rented accommodation in Southamptonand Winchester.

We also administer the SASSH scheme, a privaterented accreditation scheme in conjunction with theSouthampton City Council and Southampton SolentUniversity. We can even put you in touch with fellowstudents looking to share a house. Please contact usfor more details, and for in-depth discussions onyour options.

Part-cateredor self-catered?

Occasionally, undergraduate courses run beyond 1st July. In these cases, you will not need to extend your standardcontract to a long contract; rather, you can apply for ‘Out of Term Residence’ at your Hall Reception once you are inresidence. Please note that some halls do not offer all types of contract, and specific contract dates may vary.

Self-cateredIn self-catered accommodation, we provide thekitchen facilities and you provide the culinary skills!All students have access to a shared kitchen, withcooking equipment and lockable storage – all you willneed to bring is cutlery, plates, cups, glasses andsaucepans (and food!). Self-catering is best if you liketo live more independently or if you have specialdietary needs. Shopping for food couldn’t be easier;all our halls are within easy reach of shops andsupermarkets, either on foot or via the Uni-link busservice. There is also a large Farmers’ Market on theHighfield Campus every Monday during term time,and the Students’ Union shop stocks a variety ofchilled and frozen foods. If you are on the Glen Eyreor Wessex Lane Complexes, you can also dine in theon-site restaurants on a ‘pay-as-you-eat’ basis.

Contract lengthWe offer three types of contract length, detailed in the table below. Undergraduates can only apply for short and standardlength contracts online; if you require a longer contract, please contact us to discuss this. Contracts commence onthe weekend preceding Fresher’s Week, and the short and standard contracts end on the 1st July.

Part-cateredIn part-catered accommodation, residents havebreakfast and a main meal on weekdays (either atlunch or in the evening), with brunch on Saturdays andlunch on Sundays. You can even take your meal on oneof our teaching campuses. Residents of part-cateredaccommodation enjoy a wide choice of delicious,freshly prepared dishes, ranging from pastas to roasts,and from pizzas to sandwiches. Salads and potatoesare always an option, and a vegetarian dish is includedon all menus. Halal and Kosher food is also availableand most dietary requirements can be catered for byprior arrangement. You will also receive the flexibilityof part-catering during term times and self-cateringduring holidays.

In Southampton, we have three Hall Complexes –Wessex Lane, Glen Eyre and the Small Halls.

Each have their own style and character, and all featurethe facilities you would expect, such as launderettes,communal space and Junior Common Rooms. All arewithin easy reach of a Uni-link bus service.

Each hall has specific room types and catering optionsthat are available to residents. The table belowoutlines what is available in each hall, and the studenttype that is generally allocated to each of our premises.However, please be aware that the table is for guidanceonly, as it may be necessary to amend the types ofstudents allocated to each hall depending onprospective student interest and room availability.

Our Glen Eyre Hall Complex is around a 5 minutebus ride from the main Highfield Campus, andfeatures a number of blocks, including HartleyGrove, Brunei House and Chancellors’ Courts.

Situated in attractive landscaped surroundings, it ishome to around 2,000 undergraduate andpostgraduate students. Most room types are available,with both standard and long-let, and part-catered andself-catered contracts. Glen Eyre has a 24 hourreception, a Junior Common Room-run shop, andbarbeques on the lawn for those long summerafternoons.

In Southampton, we have a number of halls basedaround the city, not on centralised hall complexes.These are referred to as the Small Halls, and canhouse around 1,000 students across the hallswithin a range of room types, with both self-cateredand part-catered contracts available.

Gateley, Romero and St Margaret’s House are close tothe City Centre and the student-friendly BedfordPlace, while Bencraft Court and Highfield Hall are setin quieter, greener areas of Southampton. ShaftesburyAvenue Apartments and the Gower Building offeraccommodation suitable for postgraduates andstudents with partners and/or a young child. All of theSmall Halls feature comparable facilities to those onthe two large hall complexes, but have their own styleand character, and a close-knit community feel.

Erasmus ParkFor our students studying in Winchester we offeraccommodation within Erasmus Park. We have 378rooms with ensuite facilities, all fitted with internetconnection and telephony. Erasmus Park is managedby the Small Halls management team, who are basedin Gateley Hall, Southampton.

Each flat has a shared kitchen for food preparation, asErasmus Park is entirely self-catered. As with our hallsin Southampton, Erasmus Park has communal areas,a launderette, TV room and bicycle storage facilities.In 2009/10, an ensuite room cost £103.95.

Winchester,PortsmouthandBasingstoke

Balmoral House and Victoria Place –Portsmouth, and North HampshireHospital Accommodation - BasingstokeThese halls of residence are based in Portsmouthand Basingstoke, and are therefore only suitable fornursing students based in these cities. We have a range of room styles within our Halls of Residence,from standard rooms through enhanced, and premium, to roomswith private ensuite facilities.

RoomTypes

A study bedroom where residents share kitchen andbathroom facilities with between eight and twentyresidents. Some standard rooms include a personalor shared washbasin. Standard rooms are availableacross all hall sites, with both part-catered and self-catered options.

In 2009/10, the cost of a self-catered standard roomwas between £71.40 and £89.25, and the cost of apart-catered standard room was between £103.95and £121.45.

Each room in halls features a bed, a desk, a chair,a wardrobe, storage space and a noticeboard.All rooms have telephony and high speedinternet access, and all residents have access toshared kitchens. If your room does not havean ensuite toilet and shower, you will also haveaccess to shared bathroom facilities.

Some rooms have personal washbasins, andall rooms include membership of the JuniorCommon Room, and a Uni-linkbus pass in theirrent. We also have a limited number of selfcontained flats, generally suitable forpostgraduate students, and students withpartners and/or a young child.

A study bedroom where, in general, residents sharekitchen facilities with no more than seven otherresidents. These rooms have their own personalensuite bathroom facilities, fitted with shower,washbasin and toilet. Ensuite rooms are availableacross all hall sites, with both part-catered and self-catered contracts available on different sites.

In 2009/10, a self-catered ensuite room cost between£101.85 and £114.80 per week, while a part-cateredensuite room cost between £146.30 and £152.95 perweek. Please note that this is the only room typeavailable in Erasmus Park, Winchester, and that thereare also Premium Ensuite rooms available on theWessex Lane complex, which combine the featuresof a premium room and an ensuite room.

Studio flats and one bedroom apartments areavailable on the Glen Eyre and Small Halls complexes.Fitted with a bed, a desk, a chair, a wardrobe andstorage space, self contained flats are generally onlysuitable for postgraduates and mature students, orstudents with a partner or young child. Competitivelypriced, all flats feature a bathroom with shower,washbasin and toilet, and also have a fitted kitchenarea with all white goods provided. We have a verylimited supply of these flats, and cannot guarantee anoffer of this form of accommodation to all applicants.Most flats come with internet access and telephony,while Junior Common Room membership and aUni-linkbus pass are also included.*

Southampton has a wide range of private rentedaccommodation, mostly within a short travellingdistance of the main teaching sites. This gives studentsa wide choice of location and property type. Renttypically costs around £65 per week, excluding bills.

When you choose this type of accommodation, youenter into a contract directly with the landlord. Youshould therefore ensure you fully understand theterms and conditions before signing the contract, as itis a legally binding agreement.

We, at the Accommodation Service, will be happy tocheck any contract for you before you sign it, andanswer any questions you may have.

We are a core partner in the SouthamptonAccreditation Scheme for Student Housing (SASSH)programme in conjunction with Southampton CityCouncil and Southampton Solent University. SASSHonly advertises properties that conform to a set ofsafety standards (details available on our website)and this accommodation may be subject toinspections by Southampton City Council.

You should apply for accommodation as soon as you have your formaloffer of study at the University of Southampton. The offer letter/emailwill include your all-important eight digit student identification(ID) number. If you can’t locate your ID number, please contact yourAcademic School directly, or the Accommodation Service on+44 (0)23 8059 5959.

Howto apply Things to Consider

When applying foraccommodation, please takethe following things intoconsideration:

–Cost:most contracts run for40 weeks, so please look at yourstudent finance package andany additional support you mayreceive (from parents, savings,summer jobs etc).

– Location:While some hallsmay be closer to your teachingsite than others, the Uni-linkbus service offers regular andreliable transport all aroundSouthampton, and you willreceive a bus pass for theduration of your contract, aspart of your accommodationpackage.

You will have the opportunityto make friends for life whereveryou live, so please do not bedisheartened if you do notreceive your first choice ofaccommodation. As such, wewould advise you to spread yourpreferences over a number ofhall sites and room types.

Once you have your student IDnumber, you can apply for youraccommodation online atwww.onlineaccommodation.soton.ac.uk. You will first need toregister your details, and thencontinue to complete and submitan application form. You will beasked to tell us:

– Whether you would prefer self-catered or part-cateredaccommodation.

– Your preferred room type.

– Your contract length.

– Your preferred Hall location.

– If you have any specialrequirements (ie medical/dietary/cultural requirements).

Once you have submitted yourpreferences on your applicationform, you can check the status of

your application via your Universityof Southampton AccommodationAccount at www.onlineaccommodation.soton.ac.uk.

If you have applied in line with ouraccommodation guarantee, you willbe made an offer of accommodationonce you have met your conditionsof study. Most students, includingthose prospective undergraduateswaiting for A level results, will benotified between mid-August andmid-September. Students mayreceive an offer earlier if they havealready met their conditions ofstudy (for example those studentswho have deferred entry from aprevious year) and we willcommence making offers ofaccommodation to students fromthe middle of May.

Howweallocate

*If you are based on a teaching campus outside of Southampton, this willbe taken into account during the allocation process.

When allocating accommodation, we usethe information you have provided on yourapplication form to select the most appropriateroom. We aim to match every student’spreferences and profile details; however, whenthis is not possible, the next best alternativewill be offered.

Thingswe take intoaccount–Medical issues –We want you to be as happy as

possible while you’re staying with us so we will alwaystry to take into account your medical situation.However, please advise us of any special considerationsas early as possible so we can take these into accountwhen allocating you a room. Please contact theAccommodation Service to discuss these issues inmore detail. Please also note that we requiresupporting documentation alongside youraccommodation application.

–Cultural issues –Please advise us of any cultural issueswe may need to consider during room allocation.

–Year of study/degree level –We aim to grouptogether students at a similar point in their studiessince first year undergraduates may, for example, havedifferent lifestyles from postgraduates.

–Availability of rooms –We have a wide range ofrooms; however some types of accommodation aremore popular than others and we cannot guaranteean offer of a particular type or location.

Thingswedon’t takeinto account–Date of application – You are guaranteed an offer of

accommodation provided that you have applied by the1st August deadline. We do not make offers on a first-come first-served basis, and you will not receive anoffer of accommodation until you have met yourconditions of study.

–Teaching campus –We strongly believe thatstudents should have the chance to mix with a varietyof members of the university, and as such we do nottake your course or teaching site into considerationwhen allocating a room.*

–Academic achievement –We do not take intoaccount your academic history during room allocation.

– We will take your stated preferencesinto account; but we cannotguarantee meeting any specificpreference to any student, as roomallocation is entirely dependent onavailability at the time of allocation.You will be offered the most suitableroom available on the day you areallocated. In 2008/09, 89% ofapplicants received one of their threepreferences, with 65% receiving theirfirst preference. However there willbe applicants whose preferenceswe cannot match; in instances suchas this we will allocate you the mostsuitable room available at the time,and you can then apply to transferto alternative universityaccommodation once you havearrived in Southampton.

– You will be notified of your offer byemail; however we would advise thatyou also regularly check yourAccommodation Account to ensureyou do not miss the offer.

Important thingsto bear inmind

Costs

– If you are likely to be away pleaseensure you check your emails andonline Accommodation Accountregularly (or arrange for someoneto do this on your behalf ) to ensureyou do not miss the offer ofaccommodation.

– We will not make you an offer ofaccommodation until you have metyour conditions of study. For thosewho have already met theirconditions (for example studentswho hold a deferred place at theUniversity) we will start makingoffers of accommodation from themiddle of May.

– Your offer of accommodation is onlyvalid for a limited period – its expirydate will be displayed when you viewthe offer. If you do not respond, asinstructed in the offer, by the duedate, it will be withdrawn and theroom will be offered to anotherstudent. If this occurs and you stillrequire university accommodation

you may request reconsiderationof your application, but you shouldbe aware that a second offer is notguaranteed.

– Please make sure you advise us ofany special requirements – if youdon’t let us know, we cannot help!Please include details on yourapplication form, or contact us ifyou require specialist advice.

– You should be aware that in makingits initial offer of accommodation toyou, the University of Southamptonhas met its guarantee to you. It isYOUR RESPONSIBILITY on receiptof your offer to respond accordingly.The University of Southampton andthe Accommodation Service cannotaccept responsibility should youmiss, or fail to respond to, youroffer of accommodation. We willoffer advice and support in lookingfor private rented accommodationshould you need it.
