How many cushions is too many?

As funny as it sounds, this is one of the most-asked questions in my day-to-day styling and design company. Whether it is people wanting style their bedrooms for sale or just to live in, many people struggle with dressing their beds and using cushions appropriately.

Funnily enough it is not as simple it may first appear, as there are a few factors that can influence how you style your bed.

Regardless of the style of the room or the house, it is the size of the bed, the size of the cushion, the quality of the fabric and the inner filling that will affect the way you use cushions on your bed.

Getting cushions right

Here are some of the top tips to consider before you hit the shops or head online and grab another pile of cushions that end up in your linen press or storage room.

Tips to getting cushions right

● Larger or wider beds obviously need more cushions to avoid looking under-dressed.● When thinking about placement (for example, standing on their edge or laying flat)

you will need to consider the fabric they are made from. Fabrics that are heavier in weight will naturally stand on their edge better than cushions made from lightweight fabrics. Getting this step right will avoid having cushions that constantly need the corners resetting to avoid them looking like sagging “dog ears”.

● Biggest to smallest, back to front. This simple rule ensures that the selection of fabrics and colours of the decorative pillow are all highlighted.

● Vary the sizes, colours and textures of decorative pillows; the different sizes and colours provide interest and variation.

● Play with colour and patterns for a more casual look.● For a more contemporary look, pare down the decorative pillows, but attend to the

details. Simple white linens, a luxurious throw at the end of the bed and a few simple decorative pillows complete the look.

● If you want to use a lot of decorative pillows, use a limited palette so it doesn’t overwhelm the room.

The most important tip I can give you is to have some fun.
