Access Now was created by the Richmond Academy of Medicine in 2007 at the request of area clinics and public health departments who were able to meet the primary healthcare needs of their patients, but lacked the resources to provide more complex, comprehensive care. The Academy houses the program — which is recognized as Virginia’s first virtual specialty care free clinic, or what some have called “a free clinic without walls.”

Most of our generous and talented volunteers are Academy members.

Their work benefits the entire Greater Richmond region, with 950 physician volunteers and mid-level providers opening their doors to more than 4,500 uninsured people in need of specialty care since 2008.

The program operates with a small staff and maximum return on all donations; in 2010, for every dollar donated, Access Now delivered $17.04 in specialty care services.

Like a pebble dropped into a deep pool of need, Access Now sends a ripple of care across the region, improving the area’s economic and business climate, and raising the overall quality of health and life.
