Thank you for taking an interest in the Academy’s activities in the coming year. Whether you are dipping your

toes into the classical music world for the first time or are a regular supporter of the Academy, I hope that our musical offerings for 2016/17 will leave you feeling inspired and excited.

From a personal perspective, my sixth season as Music Director promises to be as action-packed as ever: I’ll be leading tours around Europe and Australia and performing Mendelssohn’s beloved Violin Concerto in London. And it is my great pleasure to see the Academy link up with my esteemed compatriot, Murray Perahia, for the landmark events of our London season.

Murray is one of very few individuals lucky enough to have enjoyed a longer artistic relationship with the Academy than myself, first working with the orchestra back in 1974. He is rightly regarded as one of the greatest pianists of our age and I am delighted that he will have the opportunity to celebrate five wonderful decades of collaboration with the Academy in Perahia Plays Beethoven at the Barbican. The combination of Murray, the Academy, and Beethoven’s incredible piano concertos is guaranteed to be one of the highlight events of the entire London classical calendar.

With other London highlights including

the virtuosic Martin Fröst in a thrilling clarinet showcase, two titanic choral works at St Martin-in-the-Fields, and a throwback to a high point in the history of the Academy with Amadeus Live at the Royal Albert Hall, it is going to be another great season.

Perahia pairs the joie-de-vivre of Beethoven’s youthful Piano Concerto No. 2 with his transcendent Piano Concerto No. 4, which contains some of the most beautiful writing for piano in the history of western classical music, including the dramatic second movement popularly associated with the myth of Orpheus taming the Furies at the gates of Hades. Beethoven’s stormy overture based on the semi-mythical life of the war-like Roman general Gaius Marcius Coriolanus opens the concert.

Amadeus (1984)

Winner of eight Academy Awards, four BAFTAs and four Golden Globes, Amadeus will be

brought to vivid life in the world premiere of Amadeus Live at the Royal Albert Hall, featuring live music. Directed by Miloš Forman (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest) and written by Sir Peter Schaffer, Amadeus tells the scintillating story of the rivalry between vindictive composer Antonio Salieri and petulant genius Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, set to a score of some of Mozart’s greatest works.

Featuring excerpts from Don Giovanni, Le nozze di Figaro and the powerful Requiem,

the complete award-winning soundtrack - recorded by the Academy with Sir Neville Marriner in 1984 - will be perfomed live by the Academy and the Philharmonia Chorus, conducted by Ludwig Wicki. Amadeus Live is an Avex Classics International production and presented by the Royal Albert Hall.

THE ACADEMY

Formed by Sir Neville Marriner in 1958 from a group of leading London musicians, the Academy gave its first

performance in its namesake church in November 1959. Through unrivalled live performances and a vast recording output – highlights of which include the 1969 best-seller Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and the soundtrack to 1985’s Oscar-winning film Amadeus – the Academy quickly gained an enviable international reputation for its distinctive, polished and refined sound.

Today the Academy is led by Music Director and virtuoso violinist Joshua Bell, retaining the collegiate spirit and flexibility of the original small, conductor-less ensemble which has become an Academy hallmark, whilst pushing the boundaries of play-directed performance to new heights. Each year the Academy collaborates with some of the world’s most talented soloists and directors, performing symphonic repertoire and chamber music on a grand scale at prestigious venues from New York to Beijing. These partnerships extend to the recording studio, where regular additions to the orchestra’s celebrated back-catalogue of over 500 recordings make the Academy one of the most recorded chamber orchestras in the world.

Highlights of the Academy’s 2016/17 season included a month-long tour of the United States and Canada with Inon Barnatan, European and Australian tours with Joshua Bell, several short tours with Sir Neville Marriner, and a complete cycle of Beethoven’s Piano Concertos with Murray Perahia in London. Additional touring engagements include performances with Julia Fischer, Kit Armstrong, Yulianna Avdeeva, Renaud Capuçon, Arabella Steinbacher, Martin Fröst, and Cameron Carpenter.

Complementing a busy international schedule, the Academy continues to reach out to people of all ages and backgrounds through its learning and participation programmes. The Academy’s flagship project for young people provides performance workshops for primary and secondary school children; partnerships with Southbank Sinfonia, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, the Royal Northern College of Music and masterclasses on tour further the development of the professional musicians

of tomorrow; the Academy provides a creative outlet for some of London’s most vulnerable and homeless adults at the West London Day Centre; and a regular programme of pre-concert talks and podcasts create opportunities for music-lovers the world over to connect and learn with the orchestra.

COMPOSER IN RESIDENCE CLASSIC FM’S ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE

Beamish, who celebrates her own 60th birthday this season, is one of Britain’s best-known contemporary

composers. Renowned for her versatility, Sally’s catalogue of works includes concertos for instruments from violin to accordion; music for film, opera and dance; tributes to composers from Debussy to Britten; and incorporates diverse influences from jazz to the music of her adopted homeland, Scotland.

As Composer in Residence, Sally’s music will be a central part of our programming over the next three seasons, both in the UK and abroad: this season the Chamber Ensemble will tour her String Sextet to the United States; in 2017/18 her Variations on a Theme of Benjamin Britten will be performed in London and on tour; and at the culmination of the partnership in 2018/19, two new commissions – including a celebration overture for Sir Neville Marriner – will receive their world premieres in London and subsequent performances around the world. Sally’s compositions will also be the subject of learning and participation projects, pre-concert talks and podcast episodes across the three seasons, and a recording celebrating the partnership in 2019.

Announcing the partnership, Sally said “I am delighted and honoured to have been appointed Composer in Residence with the Academy of St Martins. The orchestra is very special to me, as not only did I perform with them for several years as a viola player, but my mother, violinist Ursula Snow, was a member before me. When I was starting out as a composer Neville was extremely supportive, and entrusted me with several orchestral commissions. This new residency is a chance for me to re-engage with those wonderful players and to create works expressly tailored to the fantastic virtuosity and creativity which characterises the Academy.”

first ever Artists in Residence, presenting three memorable broadcasts of Academy performances, Joshua Bell’s radio presenting debut in Joshua Bell’s Guide to the Orchestra, and giving Academy audiences across the UK wider access to the work of this wonderful ensemble via the world’s largest classical music radio station.

LEARNING AND PARTICIPATION

We are strongly committed to passing on our passion through our Learning and Participation

programme. We aim to deliver dynamic, inspiring and participatory music-making projects, providing access to participants of all ages, backgrounds and abilities. Our philosophy of empowering people through music-based, non-verbal communication extends to our learning work, with our players and animateurs performing alongside groups rather than leading them. There are three main strands within our Learning and Participation work:

■ Supporting emerging talent by working with graduate, university and conservatoire musicians as they embark on a career in the orchestral sector.

■ Working with schools to provide composition and orchestral workshops,

where children can collaborate and express their musical ideas with the help of world-class Academy musicians.

■ Empowering vulnerable groups of people through our community projects, such as our longstanding work with homeless adults. For some people we have worked with, the experience has literally been life-changing as their participation in music has led to renewed confidence and sense of purpose.

We also offer a comprehensive programme of pre-concert talks and podcasts for our audiences in the UK and abroad, which explore concert repertoire and life as a musician with our players and guest artists.

The Academy of St Martin in the Fields relies on the generosity of individuals in order to continue

bringing its world-class interpretations of the classical repertoire to new audiences, and to furthering its innovative learning and participation programmes.

As the Academy approaches the end of six decades of thrilling audiences we have launched Sound Future - a three year, £2.5 million fundraising campaign in order to ensure that the Academy will continue to flourish both artistically and financially well into the future.
