Constance T. Haydock

CeCe Haydock is a graduate of Princeton Universityand received her Master’s degree in LandscapeArchitecture from SUNY School of EnvironmentalScience and Forestry. After working for the New YorkCity Parks Department, she was employed byInnocenti and Webel in Locust Valley, NY, beforestarting her own practice, Constance T. Haydock,

Landscape Architect, P.C. For the past 25 years, she has been working onpredominately residential projects, as well as municipal parks andcommercial sites. Since completing her research on Edith Wharton andRoman villas in 2007 at the American Academy in Rome, she has lecturedon the topic for Planting Fields, Princeton University, Hutton House andnumerous colleges and garden clubs. Currently, CeCe is LEED (Leadershipin Energy and Environmental Design) accredited, and is enlarging herpractice to focus on sustainability and “green” building. She is a nationaland chapter member of the US Green Building Council, as well as amember of the American Society of Landscape Architects, where sheserves as an officer for the professional sustainability group. Helping totest guidelines for the first national rating system, the Sustainable SitesInitiative (SITES), for landscape construction, she is the SITES pilotproject manager for the Hempstead Plains Education Center in GardenCity. In addition, she is an adjunct professor at Long Island Universityand teaches classes periodically at the New York Botanical Gardens.

Robert Foschi

Bob Foschi co-founded the construction company M. Foschi & Sons, Inc. in 1976. After receiving hisprofessional engineering license in 1986, he was ableto expand outside of general contracting and offerclients an option for design. A graduate of ColumbiaUniversity, School of Engineering, he is a recipient ofthe Jewel Garrets Award in Civil Engineering, and

President of the American Society of Civil Engineering Chapter atColumbia University. Bob has vast experience in designing, engineering,and building for both commercial and residential projects. Bob and hiswife Margaret have been married for 35 years. They have resided in OldBrookville for the past 31 years and have four children. Bob currentlyserves on the Board of Trustees for The Foster Foundation, is on theAdvisory Council for the Mentoring Partnership of Long Island and is apast board member of Friends Academy.

Dahlias are native to Central Americaand Mexico where it is the nationalflower. In 1571 the Spanish experton medicinal botany, FranciscoHernández, who became thepersonal physician to King Philip ofSpain, left for Mexico and thePhilippines where he collectedspecimens for seven years. Threeindigenous artists accompanied him.One of them, Francisco Dominguezmade at least three drawings ofdahlias. The entire manuscriptrecording the expedition, translatedinto Latin, was not published until1651 in Rome as Rerum MedicarumNovae Hispaniae Thesaurus Seu NovaPlantarium, Animalium et MineraliuimMexicanorum Historia. In Europe, sustained interest indahlias did not become establisheduntil the late eighteenth centurywhen in 1776 they were namedposthumously for Anders Dahl, oneof Linnaeus’s students. The firstcuttings of dahlias did not arrive inSpain from Mexico until 1789 andthe plants were first grown inEngland in 1804. The doublevarieties first bloomed in Belgiumabout 1830 and after that there wasvery little interest in single forms.1840 is the earliest date that dahliasappear in an American nurserycatalog. They had been importedfrom England and had been grownin the garden of Mr. G. C. Thornburnof Astoria, New York.

The dahlia is genetically unstable; ithas eight sets of chromosomesinstead of the conventional two,and is therefore predisposed todiversity. A great moment in dahliahistory occurred in 1872 when adouble red form with reverse quilledflowers appeared. The plant’sendless source of novelty has meantthat for over two hundred years anaverage of more than one hundred

new cultivars have been annuallyintroduced.

The history of the dahlia at PlantingFields dates back to the estate era ofthe property. Mr. Coe admireddahlias because of their bold textureand rich colors. In the mid-1980sPaul Callahan, a dedicated volunteerturned employee, reintroduceddahlias to Planting Fields. Raisedbeds were constructed near theCarriage House in rows to allowvisitors to view dahlias in a display

setting. This garden was maintainedsolely by volunteers under hisdirection. With Paul’s sad passing in1995, efforts were made to redesigna commemorative garden that wouldembody his passion for dahlias in agarden setting while educating thevisiting public.

In 1997, construction began on anew garden. Elements of thesurrounding hardscape were echoed

in the garden so that it would blendinto its surroundings. The gardenwas designed by Dwight Andrewswith input from arboretum staff,Mid Island Dahlia Society membersand Peter Tilles, trustee of thePlanting Fields Foundation. Theimplementation of the garden wasboth labor intensive and costly. Theconstruction of the garden wasgenerously donated by Peter Tilles.

In the spring of 1998 the garden wascompleted and ready for planting.The Mid Island Dahlia Societyoffered to unconditionally maintainand develop the garden as one of thelargest and most spectacular dahliacollections in the Northeast. Underthe direction of Steve Nowotarski,Mid Island Dahlia Society membersdonate nearly 2000 hours a year ofexpertise to growing 400 dahliaplants of show and garden quality. In2011, a breast cancer awareness pinkdahlia bed was added as the centralbed. The beautiful pink dahlias aresurrounded by a collection of pinkpetunias generously donated eachyear by White Flower Farm. As theyears go by new types and varietieshave been added. The latest additionis a collection of low growing dahliasthat are fully double. These dahliasdo not require staking and areavailable in a wide range of colors. Inaddition, Mid Island Dahlia Societyis beginning to build a collection ofantique dahlias over 75 years old.This collection will show theevolution of modern dahlias.

The members of Mid Island DahliaSociety are at the garden everyWednesday morning 9am -11am.Visitors are invited to stop by to viewthe garden and ask questions. TheMid Island Dahlia Societyacknowledges the outstandingcooperation of the staff of PlantingFields and the Director, VincentSimeone. Over the years thisblending of State and private effortshas been the key to the success ofthis outstanding garden.

2012 Internship Program a Great SuccessBY VINCENT A. SIMEONE

Since 1987, Planting Fields hasadministered an internship programthat offers hands on fieldexperience for six to eight studentsin the horticultural and landscapearchitecture fields. Each groupprovides their own uniqueness andcharacter to the program. This year,our eight students have clearlymade their positive presence felt byimproving the grounds, gardensand greenhouse collections.Weeding, pruning, mulching,removing invasive plants, plantingas well as watering and maintainingrare and unusual plant collectionswere the everyday norm for theinterns. In addition, the internsassisted the maintenance staff withrepairs to the irrigation system atcritical times.

Part of the intern experience wasfor students to participate in weeklyfield trips to the best gardens andhorticultural institutions that LongIsland and New York City have tooffer. They visited private andpublic gardens, universities,botanical gardens and arboreta,nurseries, growers and uniquelydesigned landscaped grounds ofsome of the most impressiveproperties in the area. Not onlydoes this opportunity educate theinterns in sound horticulturalpractices, but also offers them anopportunity to network withrespected professionals in the field.

Our interns this year were from allover the country and from diversebackgrounds. They are: Diane

Blakely, University of Delaware;Kevin Campbell, SUNY ESF; AlyssaGarcia, Cornell University; MattKallen, SUNY-ESF; Sam Lear,Farmingdale State University;Raymond Magliulo, Eckerd College;Kalle Ostendorf, SUNY-ESF and JeffSiegler, University of Arkansas. Theinternship is funded and supportedby the Planting Fields Foundationand its board members. Thearboretum is extremely grateful forthis opportunity to employ suchenthusiastic and hardworkinginterns. Often, several of ourinterns elect to stay on as longerterm employees once theirinternship has concluded and wehope that several of our studentsthis year will do that.

If you subscribe to the tenet thatvolunteering is a valuablecommodity in our society, and if youcould place a tangible value on that,one could conclude that PlantingFields is a very wealthy communitythanks to the more than 200dedicated individuals who donatetheir time and energy to help makethis property the wonderful placethat it is.

Our many volunteers have not onlygiven a part of themselves, but havegained a feeling of satisfaction andgratification of doing somethingvery worthwhile for the benefit ofothers. Through publicity as well asword-of-mouth, we continue toattract new volunteers each year,and so our volunteer programcontinues to grow.

This year Harold Fishkin iscelebrating 30 years with PlantingFields. It was quite serendipitousthat Hal even discovered PlantingFields. He was in the vicinity toattend a business meeting andbecause he had some spare time, hedecided to explore the arboretum.The first building he saw was theLaundry House and went inside.There he met someone who gavehim a volunteer application form,and the rest, as they say, is history.

Initially, Hal became a Coe Hall tourguide as well as a garden guide; hewas a board member of PlantingFields Foundation for several years,and belonged to the Friends ofPlanting Fields organization. Halhas been involved with andsupported many different projectsand events throughout the years.He has always been willing to do

anything and everything he could tohelp lend support when it wasneeded - he even helped to fix atoilet once! Hal currently spendsMondays at the reception deskenthusiastically welcoming visitorsand providing them withinformation.

Oh yes, Hal has another veryimportant asset – his wife, Rhoda,who became a tour guide one yearafter he joined the volunteerprogram, and she, too, is stillvolunteering today.

We are, indebted to Hal for all thathe has done and continues to do.Our thanks and gratitude to thisspecial man who has a trueunderstanding of what it means tobe a volunteer.

Nearly a thousand large houses andestates were built on Long Islandbetween the Civil War and WorldWar II. Coe Hall is one of the finestconstructed in that great tradition.Today only a small portion of theseestates survive and very few havetheir original mansion, parkland,gardens and greenhouses. Coe Hall,therefore, is an extraordinarysurvivor among hundreds of lostmansions, its interiorsrepresentative of an ambitious eraof estate building when LongIsland’s Gold Coast had manymore great houses than Newport,Rhode Island or anywhere else inthe United States. Planting Fields isin public ownership and thusprotected in perpetuity, and the siteplays an ever increasingly vital rolein the cultural life of Long Island.

The interior design firm, Charles ofLondon, with offices in New YorkCity, specialized in English Tudorrevival rooms. They created a groupof rooms for Coe Hall that are rareand extensively documentedsurvivors of their work. The rooms’

presentation and interpretation inthe 21st century are therefore ofsignificant importance.

Mr. and Mrs. Coe’s choice of anElizabethan style house may wellhave been prompted by the factthat Mr. Coe had grown up inEngland. It is also possible that hewas influenced by a pervasiveinterest in this country at that timeof Tudor revival architecture forsuburban and country houses.This movement began in Britainwith the popularity of the romanticnovels of Sir Walter Scott. Scott’sown house, Abbotsford (1818-1824), mostly in the Tudor style,was widely admired and publicized.In 1912, during this later period ofinterest in Tudor architecture, AllenW. Jackson published his influentialAmerican book, The Half-TimberHouse, in which he declared, “In thehalf-timber houses of England wereborn, lived and died our own greatgrandfathers…they are ourarchitectural heritage, ourhomesteads, and hold animportant place in our building

history.” Thus, Tudor style housesrepresented stability and heldintimations of dynasty.

The magazine largely responsible forpromoting a new taste for oldhouses was Country Life, founded in1897 and published in London. Itwas widely read by Americansinvolved with building large countryhouses. The magazine’s firstfeatured house on January 1st,1897, was a stone and half-timbered Tudor manor, BaddesleyClinton in Warwickshire (nowowned by the National Trust) thathas many elements, includingornamental brick chimneys that arefeatured at Coe Hall. There is noevidence that Baddesley was aspecific source for Coe Hall, but it isnoteworthy that Country Life wenton to publish many Tudor houses inthe ten years before Coe Hall wasbuilt. The magazine glamorized theEnglish countryside and its manors,and made successful businessmenlong to live in them. Indeed, theweekly publication worshipedeverything English; houses, gardens,

After William R. Coe died in 1955, Coe Hall and other buildings on the

estate were used as a college. Most of the mansion’s original furnishings were removed

from the house by his widow and his four children. But beginning in the late 1970s, in

a program led by Planting Fields Foundation Chairman, Michael D. Coe, the mansion

has been shown to visitors as a historic home. Most of the ground floor rooms and just

two second floor bedrooms, have been extensively refurnished. A large group of

original pieces of furniture, 82 in all, have been returned, and over 250 artifacts have

been acquired by the Foundation over a thirty year period, providing a very good sense

of how the house looked in its heyday.

sports, particularly horse sports—fox hunting, polo, steeple-chasingand thoroughbred racing, whichMr. Coe and his familyparticipated in.

Hand in hand with the period’srenewed commitment to Tudorarchitecture, was a tremendousinterest by designers and their clientsin high quality craftsmanship,particularly in decorative stone andwood carvings. Because of this CoeHall has an abundance of finecarving inside and out. Three of thebest examples, the half scale, threedimensional figures on the mainstaircase landing, have sadlydisappeared, but several groups ofrelief carving survive. Another aspectof this revival in craftsmanship atCoe Hall is the exceptionally finedecorative metal work, in bothexecution and design, by Samuel

Yellin, the distinguishedPhiladelphia-based metal worker.Equally important at Coe Hall, andalso reflecting a renewed passion forcraftsmanship of the past, is thehigh quality and abundance of oldand restored figurative stained glassin the mansion’s windows.

The rooms of Coe Hall withtheir original furnishings,which were brought togetherin the early 1920s, are in astyle that is a directreflection of a newly createdand intensively pursuedhistory of old English roomsand the history of Englishfurniture. This was in fact awholly new re-discovery andre-evaluation of antiqueEnglish furniture.

This history was begun in the1890s by curators at the Victoriaand Albert Museum, Britain’snational design museum, and byfurniture collectors and dealers.One of the earliest period roomsexhibited at the V&A Museum in1894 was a Tudor paneledchamber removed from the OldPalace at Bromley-By-Bow (inwhat is now the East End ofLondon). Once on public displaythe room was used by a number ofinterior design firms as aconvenient model to bereproduced for their clients whowere building Tudor revival houseswith paneled rooms like the den atCoe Hall. Between 1894 and 1898Percy Macquoid published hisHistory of English Furniture, the firstsystematic history of its type.Macquoid was a West End theaterset designer and a furniture

collector. In 1896, the firstexhibition of old English furniturewas held at the Bethnal GreenMuseum and featured a group ofElizabethan court cupboards suchas the ones photographed in thedining room at Coe Hall duringthe 1920s.

In comparing Coe Hall’s interiorswith those of its predecessor atPlanting Fields, the Byrnemansion which was destroyed byfire in 1918, it becomes clear thatthe decorative aesthetic in therebuilt house, Coe Hall,represents a distinct change intaste. The Byrne house photos, ofabout 1912, show in thetraditional hall living-room amedley of furniture in differentstyles; for instance there is aCharles II baroque style arm chairfacing the fireplace, a French,

Louis XV, rococo style bergere, inthe left middle distance, and anEnglish George III, neo-classicalstyle chair on the right. This is ahighly eclectic mix, and none ofthese pieces is actually of itstime—they are all revivals of the17th and 18th century originals.

In comparison, at Coe Hallabout ten years later, thefurniture in the den(excluding the upholsteredfurniture) is actually 16thcentury in origin, like theoak court cupboard. Those pieces that are not of the period are veryclose reproductions, almost indistinguishablefrom the originals, in shapeand finish.

The commitment by Charles ofLondon, to use original or closelyoriginal furniture is pervasivethroughout the house. This newtaste for a certain level of puritycame about under the influenceof Percy Macquiod’s four volumeHistory of English Furniture. The firstvolume had classified 16thcentury oak furniture for the firsttime ever, and the book waswidely read and used by interiordesigners for inspiration, as atCoe Hall.

This brief account of the originsof Coe Hall’s fine rooms is takenfrom a larger document, “A Planfor the Furnishing of Coe Hall”,that will lead over the next threeyears to the re-interpretation andrefurnishing of four bedrooms,including those of William R. Coeand his wife, Mai Rogers Coe.

Festival. Ms. O’Connell made her LincolnCenter debut last March in the Juilliard Honors Recital at Alice Tully Hall withpianist Brent Funderburk. Brought up in County Clare, Ireland, Ms. O’Connellholds a Masters in Music Degree from The Juilliard School and is currentlypursuing the Artist Diploma in Opera Studies program with voice teacher Dr.Robert White. The Irish Arts Council generously supports her studies and she hasbeen awarded the Maurice R. Boyd Scholarship for Vocal Studies and the MakikoNarumi Prize for outstanding mezzo-soprano by The Juilliard School.

The Amphion Quartet was the ProtégéQuartet-in-Residence at Chamber Music Northwest, where the quartet hadthe opportunity to collaborate with artistic director/clarinetist David Shifrin,and they also performed at the OK Mozart Festival.

FRANK SMITH

Frank Smith received a bachelor’s degree MagnaCum Laude in History from Adelphi University inMay 2012. While studying at Adelphi, Frankwas awarded Adelphi University OutstandingJunior of the Year and Senior of the Year inHistory. He has presented his research onskilled and industrial slavery at the NationalConference on Undergraduate Research and hisSenior Thesis on Edward Randolph, a 17th

century English colonial administrator, has been nominated for Adelphi’sOutstanding History Paper of the Year.

Frank began at Coe Hall as a volunteer in May 2011 in the Archives.Combing through the family letters and correspondences of the Coefamily, he put together a chronology that shows the activities of eachfamily member over the many years of their lives. Chosen as a CuratorialIntern in the fall of 2011, he has worked on digitalizing the Coe familyledgers, and has helped to research portions of the Cocktail Cultureexhibition. Frank is deeply interested in examining and interpreting LongIsland’s rich history. Assisting at Coe Hall has given him the opportunityto research this subject and help interpret it for visitors to Planting Fields.

GWENDOLYN L. SMITH

Gwendolyn L. Smith has recently joined PlantingFields Foundation as Assistant Curator. She is aMassachusetts native and graduated fromSmith College with a Bachelors Degree in ArtHistory and Harvard University with a MastersDegree in Museum Studies.

Gwendolyn joins us from the Peabody EssexMuseum, where she worked as an Exhibitions

Coordinator. Her fondest memory while at PEM was working on theplanning and logistics of installing “Fiery Pool: The Maya and the MythicSea” and traveling with “Treasures from the Forbidden City,” whichbrought her to the Met, Milwaukee Art Museum, and the PalaceMuseum in Beijing. Prior to PEM, she worked at the Sterling & FrancineClark Art Institute in the Exhibitions and Registration departments, aswell as serving as a project coordinator for a time during their expansion.Gwendolyn has also worked in historic houses; she spent eleven seasonsat the Ralph Waldo Emerson house and also worked at the OrchardHouse, both in Concord, Massachusetts.

Gwendolyn is delighted to be at Planting Fields, and looks forward toworking on a number of curatorial, collections, and exhibitionsrelated projects.
