Dame Sally attends
celebration at
Downing Street
Dame Sally joined Prime Minister David Cameron
and Education Secretary Michael Gove at an event
in Downing Street on Monday, celebrating
excellence in state education.
Also in attendance at Number 10 were fellow ARK
principal Damian McBeath, of ARK Bentworth and
ARK Conway, and ARK Chief Executive Lucy Heller.
All were invited in recognition of the outstanding
success of the schools and organisations that they
are associated with.
Dame Sally said: “I am delighted to have been
invited to Downing Street to celebrate what has so
far been an excellent year for everyone invovled
with Burlington Danes Academy.
“I reiterated to our staff this morning, the positive
attention that we receive is all thanks to their hard
work and commitment. They do so much to ensure
that our students have every opportunity to fulfil their
potential.
“I was particularly proud to hear Mr Cameron refer
specifically to Burlington Danes in such a positive
light during his speech. It’s great that he is so clearly
impressed with our achievements. He commented
on our outstanding results and the fact that we are
at the forefront of state schools.”
Mr McBeath said: “It was an absolute honour to be
invited to such an event. I’m delighted that the
prime minister has recognised all the hard work and
dedication of the pupils, staff and communities of
ARK Bentworth and ARK Conway primary schools.
“With Dame Sally representing Burlington Danes at
the event, this shows the strength and quality of
schools in this area.”
Duke of Edinburgh update
Ms Cartlidge: 25 students arrived in a very soggy
Richmond Park on Saturday to practice their
navigation skills in preparation for the Bronze D of E
qualifying expedition on Saturday 24th-25th May.
They worked extremely hard and all the teams
completed the route successfully, even though I
suspect the groups spent a considerable amount of
time chasing the deer!

BDA boys retain ARK 7s title
Year eight pupils from Isaac Newton, Bolingbroke
and ARK Putney came together at Burlington Danes
Academy on Wednesday to compete for the
coveted ARK Rugby Sevens title.
With the sport currently taking off in many corners of
the ARK network – this being the second year the
tournament has been held – there was a lot resting
on the afternoon’s matches. Not ones to shy away
from a spot of rain, the boys shrugged off a heavy
downpour and took to the field with an intensity and
determination sure to produce some entertaining
rugby.
First up in the round-robin stage of the event were
BDA and Isaac Newton. After what was a very
physical opening encounter, Burlington Danes
emerged the winners with the final score at 20-0. A
strong Bolingbroke side then beat ARK Putney by the
same margin, scoring a series of impressive tries
worked through good ball retention and quick
passing amongst a fiery back line.
Burlington Danes then took on Bolingbroke in what
looked to be the pick of the early matches.
Following a close first ten minutes, during which the
teams traded sustained periods of possession, the
score stood at 15-5 in favour of the home team. Two
tries in quick succession from Usher and Kaelan
secured the match for Burlington Danes, finishing 25-
5.
The final three fixtures of the group stage saw Isaac
Newton beat ARK Putney by 20-5, Bolingbroke beat
Isaac Newton by 20-5 and Burlington Danes beat
ARK Putney by 30-0.
As the clouds broke and the sun filtered onto the
pitch, the third and fourth place playoff between
ARK Putney and Isaac Newton got underway. ARK
Putney found form, stealing third place with a
disciplined and convincing 25-0 victory. In the final
match of the day, a hat trick from BDA wing Usher
helped the hosts retain their crown as ARK Rugby
Sevens champions, beating Bolingbroke by 20-5.
BDA coach Mr Thornton said: “We’d like to thank all
of the teams who attended. It’s great to come
together with other ARK schools for some friendly
competition. We were all very impressed with the
standard this afternoon. It’s plain to see that a lot of
time and effort has gone into training over the last
year. Hopefully we’ll have more schools taking part
next time.”
Omar, captain of BDA, said: “We all really enjoyed it.
It was good to play against other ARK teams and
we’re happy to have won.”
All of the players present showed great
sportsmanship during and between games,
behaving very much in the positive spirit of rugby.
BDA’s literacy department oversaw another very
successful Speaking and Listening Activity Day this
week, with an emphasis on oral presentations.
It is widely accepted that confident oral
communication is conducive to improved results,
helping to develop students’ writing and social skills.
Ms Grainger said: “It was a pleasure to see students
presenting their ideas. This happens all across the
school from smaller groups to whole class
presentations – or even assemblies.
“7D gave a particularly impressive assembly to the
whole of Year 7.
“8B impressed several of their teachers with their
elevated vocabulary and considerate listening skills
which they demonstrated when giving one another
some high-quality feedback.”

BDA in the News: “Headteachers from two top-
performing West London schools joined Prime
Minister David Cameron at an event in Downing
Street on Monday to celebrate excellence in state
education.
Damian McBeath, who heads ARK Bentworth
Primary Academy and ARK Conway Primary
Academy, and Dame Sally Coates, principal at
Burlington Danes Academy, were invited in
recognition of their schools’ outstanding
achievements. “

A first fixture for
BDA’s impressive
rugby girls
Mr Thornton: On Tuesday BDA's year 8 and 9 girls
played in their first ever Inter school touch rugby
match. The visitors to Du Cane Road were Sacred
Heart Girls School who arrived with good numbers
ready for what was also their debut at the sport.
It proved to be an enjoyable evening. Both teams
lacking game understanding but more than making
up for it with their enthusiasm. The game stopped
after 20 minutes for a short coaching session for both
sides and then restarted with some rule changes.
An end to end 2nd half ended in a 4 v 3 victory to
Sacred Heart. Seconds after the final whistle the
heavens then opened and the teams dispersed
rather quickly!
Well done girls you were a credit to the school and a
rematch is scheduled for after half term for you to
take your revenge.
Well done Demi, Laureen, Paulina, Noar, Amira,
Jasmine, Keyanna and Kushanna. A special thanks
to Demi Chante Reid for her help in organising the
game.
U15 cricket report:
BDA v The London
Oratory
Mr Crawford: After winning the toss against an
experienced London Oratory side, openers Parvez
and Martin walked out on a sunny afternoon to face
the new cherry. After seeing off the first over quite
comfortably, Oratory’s number 1 bowler soon had
the BDA team in a spin, extracting great turn off of
the freshly cut BDA wicket.
A rampant bowling attack soon had the home
team on the ropes at 7-4, as BDA lost their most
experienced batsmen. BDA’s batsmen continued to
struggle and failed to get the ball off of the square,
only managing to post 21 runs in 11 overs.
With Oratory set a seemingly simple chase, a wobbly
start from the openers had them on the back foot at
2-2. Oratory’s number three batsmen managed to
steady the ship and hit back to back boundaries to
move the away team closer to their target. With
tight bowling from Aadarsah (8) and Sachin (9)
Oratory struggled to knock the runs off with ease.
Eventually Oratory’s middle order managed to steer
them home for the loss of 5 wickets with 4 overs to
spare.
Due to a quick game both managers agreed to
have a second innings in the style of a ‘5 over bash’.
Oratory batted first and managed to post a
challenging 31 runs from just 30 balls, led again by
their number 3 batsmen. With a difficult chase,
openers Sachin and Aanosh hit a succession of
boundaries to cruise to the target set with 2 over’s to
spare.
The second innings showed that this group of players
definitely have what it takes to compete with other
schools in the borough.
U13 cricket report: BDA v
The London Oratory
Aadarsh, Y8: On Monday 12th May Burlington Danes
cricket team took on The London Oratory in their first
game of the season.
Burlington Danes were elected to bat. The team’s
inexperience did not show, with BDA delivering a
solid batting performance. Aston, Usif and Aadarsh
batted strongly as BDA posted a total of 49, setting
a target of 50 in 15 overs for the home side to chase
down. However, London Oratory scored at a
consistent pace and managed to score 50 runs in 11
overs. However, it was a very strong start from the
BDA boys in their first game of the year.
BDA ATHLETICS SEASON GETS UNDERWAY
BDA’s star-strewn athletics team took part in the
ESAA English Schools Track and Field Cup at
Croydon Arena this week, competing against
schools from all over London.
The group finished a very respectable sixth place
overall. Special mention must be made of the
following students for their excellent performances:
100m: Sheldon West
200m: Kai Hippolyte-Patrick
300m: Jaheim Robinson
800m: Aston Solomon
Hurdles: Enzo Djimadoum Mbaikosset
Shot: Kaelan Paul, Jaheim Robinson

Latest news from the library Ms Hartnett: Good afternoon everyone, hope you’ve
all been enjoying the fantastic weather! This weekend
will be perfect weather for sitting outside with a good
book, so make the most of it. If you’ve got exams
coming up, don’t forget to take a quick break from
revision and maybe read up around your subject – it
will definitely help you get those top grades!
We’re getting closer and closer to the end of the
school year, so make sure you’re doing AR quizzes for
all of the books you read to have as much chance as
possible to win prizes – one of the competitions we’ll
be doing is for year 8 and 9 to see who’s read the
highest number of words throughout the entire year –
and there’s no clear winner yet, so make sure you
give yourself as much of a chance as possible. If there
are books you’ve read that aren’t on AR, talk to us
about the possibility of writing a quiz for it yourself – we
can put any quizzes that you make on the AR system
so that other people can take them.
The Friday quiz this week is a guest quiz created by
Dion Wildman – you have to name the flag, and
come up with a book from that country. Come and
try it out! If you would like to write a quiz to become
the Friday quiz, about anything book related (maybe
questions about your favourite book or series of
books?) then come and give your idea to any of the
librarians and we can sort it out for you. Last weeks’
quiz was another guest quiz by Aishni in 7B – and it
was all about The Hunger Games. The winner of last
weeks’ quiz was Nadia Ahmed in 7R so come and collect your prize!
Zom-B
by Darren Shan
Ms Hartnett: Darren Shan is the master of horror, and
is widely known for his gruesome stories in both the
‘Cirque Du Freak’ and ‘Demonata’ Series’. Now
he’s back with a new horror series, Zom-B.
Zom-B follows the story of ‘B’, a rough kid with a
habit of bullying, as a zombie invasion starts to
spread throughout the UK.
B’s Dad is a vile character: racist, abusive and
violent, and I love the way Darren Shan doesn’t hold
back in describing him. Though B is later shown to be
something of a bully too, we completely understand
as we have already seen the interactions with B’s
father. B’s father is dismissive of the news reports on
a zombie attack in Ireland, calling it a hoax, and
saying it is all a publicity stunt. B is not so sure, and
when a creepy ‘family friend’ comes to call, it seems
to tie in with the coming zombie apocalypse.
Though this book has all the requisite terror, with
zombie’s digging fingers into people’s skulls, and
arms being ripped off, it is also a really interesting
read dealing with racism, and B’s struggle to deal
with a dad who he knows is horrible, but loves anyway. I highly recommend this book!

COMMENDATION
This week’s commendation goes to Arek Mikielski 8U,
who found an iPhone on the field on Monday and
handed it in to a member of staff. We all know how
expensive iPhones are and how important they can
be to people. Thanks to Arek’s kind actions, the lost
phone has been returned to its very grateful owner.
As ever, we are extremely proud of the honesty that
students continue to show at BDA, supporting one
another and the BDA community spirit.
